The Royal Navy has dispatched a Type 23 frigate to the Middle East amid rising tensions in the region between the West and Iran.

HMS Westminster set sail from Portsmouth for a seven-month mission to provide security and will also carry out counter-piracy patrols during its deployment and police busy shipping lanes.

The deployment comes as Britain joined the United States and France in sending a flotilla of warships through the sensitive Strait of Hormuz in a pointed message to the Iranian regime.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Argyll, was part of the US-led carrier group to pass through the waterway, as tensions continued to escalate over Tehran's nuclear programme.

HMS Westminster's commanding officer, Captain Nick Hine, said he and his crew were "itching" to get going.

"It takes a tremendous amount of effort to get a complex and sophisticated warship ready for operations and I am extremely proud of my ship's company for the work they have done in getting us to this point," he said.

"We sail into a region of heightened tensions and great challenges and we are ready and up for it."

Last year the warship was deployed at short notice to the Mediterranean to assist in evacuating UK nationals from Libya and to conduct operations in support of United Nations Security Council resolutions against the Gaddafi regime.

There was me thinking this country was so skint we had to destroy the NHS, education, welfare state, have disabled people commiting suicide because of poverty yet we can afford to get invovled in another ME war with a country that has nuclear weapons this time. We all know where this is going to end. Digging bunkers anyone?

That part of the world has always been a hotspot. the only change is the type of weapons now used compared to the sword. Tribes have fought one anothers for centuries to achieve supremacy. Now there is a resugence of that misguided need to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with.
They have conquered and have been conquered but the lessons of peaceful coexitence has not been learned. So now we have yet again a confrontation about an issue as old as humans themselves, the need for supreamcy over one another.

With a bit of luck these ships will only be going one way, so they won't be needing any fuel for the homeward Journey..

As an American military professional, let me tell you that the British armed forces of all services are considered highly professional (It would pain me to say the best). I can tell you that the American Navy will be glad to have a British naval presence with them should a conflict start. In addition, "First Sea Lord" is a much cooler title than our "Chief of Naval Operations.
