Northern Lights: Aurora Borealis Lights Up The UK

The Northern Lights are expected to continue their sporadic illumination of the UK skies tonight.

Stargazers were able to feast their eyes on the green and purple hues of the Aurora Borealis in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland and the North East over the weekend and the show could continue for several days.

The phenomena is normally only visible in the Arctic Circle but increased solar activity means the lights are more visible further south.

The heavenly glow is caused by storms erupting on the surface of the Sun, which throw matter towards Earth.
