More Grim Polls For Ed Miliband Amid Further Evidence Of Tory Surge

Polls Labour Tories

PA/The Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 24/01/2012 06:20 Updated: 24/01/2012 08:36

Support for Labour is plummeting, according to new voter research.

The latest Guardian ICM opinion poll puts the Tories on 40%, the party's highest rating in the newspaper's surveys since March 2010 and five points ahead of the Opposition.

Separate research carried out by Populus for The Times sees Labour on 38 points, down one since December, while the Tories gained two taking them to 37.

It also reported the number of voters who "find it difficult to imagine Ed Miliband running the country as prime minister" was growing - up from 63% in September to 68% in the latest survey.

Read Peter Kellner from YouGov's blog on HuffPost UK about why they're so confident of the Tories' lead in the polls.

Today's polls tally with those taken at the weekend, which either showed the two main parties neck and neck, or the Tories taking a significant lead

The YouGov survey for The Sunday Times put the Conservatives on 41% compared with 36% for Labour - the biggest Conservative lead since autumn 2010. The Liberal Democrats trail on 9%.

Meanwhile a ComRes poll for The Independent on Sunday and Sunday Mirror put the two main parties level-pegging on 38%, with the Tories up two points from last month and Labour down two. The Liberal Democrats are down one point on 11%.

However the poll suggested Labour would do better if Ed Miliband was replaced as leader by his brother David - which would see them gain a three-point advantage - 38% to 35% - over the Conservatives, while the Lib Dems drop to 9%.

With David Miliband as leader, Labour attracts support from 8% of Tory voters and 15% of Liberal Democrats. The polls will be a continuing source of concern for Labour, which has watched the clear poll lead it enjoyed throughout much of 2011 evaporate. Taking in the margin of error, most polls in the past two months have the two big parties neck-and-neck.

While Ed Miliband is Labour leader, the party will not get my vote. He does not have the likeability factor, every time he opens his mouth all that comes out is utter nonsense.

Don't get me wrong I am not a Condem supporter and I have sometimes voted for Labour in the past, but I just couldn't vote to put Ed Miliband into Downing Street!

I think I may stand as a Spoilt Vote Candidate next time ....

ed its time to go i have been a labour supporter all my life.the part as lost its way the labour party was set up to help the working class but i am sorry to say the last few years there been a new tory party.when they put petrol up beer up cigs up that hits the working class not the rich.we should now go back to our working class roots. we need a strong leader that will listern to the working nman and women. we need rid of cameron and judas clegg before its to late. i think the next leader should be john cruddas hes in touch with the working class

New Labour gave away billions in benefits so that they could say we're all working class now. Trouble is with no jobs today we're all just benefits class now.

We had 13 years of inept Opposition from the Tories, and even after all the mistakes New Labour made, they still couldn't win an election outright!

Ed Millibean is another Ian Duncan-Smith and William Hague......unelectable as a leader of this country.

The problem Labour have though, is that they are no longer Labour.....they are NEW Labour, and certainly do not represent the values of the traditional Labour Party.

The Leaders of all three main parties are clear Tories...as were Blair and Brown....and it amuzes me when the Plastic Tories go on about the last Govt being socialist.
11:06 on 24/01/2012
I couldn’t stand Blair but he was the only hope that Labour had but as usual they had to stab him in the back so that Brown could take over as unelected PM. Labour have again put themselves into the dark ages by allowing Ed Milliband to be there leader he is awful as a leader. His brother David was the only person who could lead Labour but they stabbed him in the back as well hopefully it will be another 20 Years before Labour get back in by that time the damage they have done in the past 13 Years will have been repaired.

Blair was not stabbed in the back, in fact he was quite happy to stay the head of the Labour party till he knew they were unelectable. Then he ran away and left the Labour party floundering.

A union bought and paid for man, you get what you pay for and the Labour party are now regretting letting the union paymasters dictate policy.

They have to because the unions pay for it, if they didn't have a voice in choosing the leader then they wouldn't pay, would they? The current labour party is just a clone of the tories anyway, fulfilling a function within our stagnant political system.

Same as the Tories are bought and paid for by the city. Do you not think the city has a huge say in the Tory policies?

how can they lead this country, they don't know how to live in it
10:44 on 24/01/2012
What ever Labour decide to do [and I'm sure there are many meeting going on as I write] they need to do it quickly and decisively. Then, and only then, will the electorate be able work out what the labour Party's polices are! At present we seem to know nothing about them.

The problem for both Millibands and the whole of Labour's front bench is that they are all associated with the failures of the past, for which the rest of us are having to pay a very heavy price. It is going to take new people with new policies for Labour to recover from the legacy of their thirteen years in power.
10:43 on 24/01/2012
Pretty much sums it up realy, these are the same fools (apart frome eddy boy) who held sway previously and think we all have very short memories!

Ed would make even the most ardent Labour supporter think twice before casting their vote.
09:34 on 24/01/2012
I was surprised when Ed Milliband was elected labour leader. He is no doubt a very intelligent and articulated person, however one gets the feeling that he does not have the experience necessary to guide his party through these diffuclt times. Perhaps his older brother should be given a chance as he has held senior ministerial positions when in government. Ed is just not enough in the public eye to make an impression, he may be busy rewriting the manifest, for what it is worth, but he must be much more visible than he is.
10:44 on 24/01/2012
Er, remember, he pipped his bro at the post as the unions decided he would be best (for them). He is a union bought and paid for leader and now the party is paying for it.

Nicolo I would have thought you would greatly admire a man that could do to his own brother what Ed did to Dave.
18:12 on 24/01/2012
it was a fair contest, I just do not thik he has the experience necessary to a mount a counter attack on the conservatives and more important to win an election, this must be on the mind of all members of the shadow cabinet. fortunatelky or unfortunately it could loook as though labour will be consigned to the opposition for quite a time to come. Of course it depends on what politacal leaning you are. As I do not have the right to vote in this country as i have never givn up my nationality by birth and yes i am not Italian depsite the name.
09:19 on 24/01/2012
If labour have any hopes in the next general election then they must replace Miliband NOW and get someone with positive ideas and have the inner strength to take on Cameron. Miliband appears to be more Tory than Labour

I agree entirely. Voting for any of these Party's is helping to support a corrupt and broken political process. No wonder so many of us feel disenfranchised with politics.

But, as tempting as it may be, not voting at all can't be an option at the next election. We need to find a way to send a final clear message to these people that their behaviour is not good enough.

But how? Not voting at all will just be twisted into lazyness or apathy by these people. Protesting doesn't work either is their Media just help twist that into something else.

The only way I can think of is to put a cross in All in the boxes and void the slip. If Millions of people do this, surely they wouldn't be able to avoid the reality of the situation.

Not only would it be a clear protest, but it would be a peaceful protest as well. The whole world then know that the British people are no longer prepared to sit around and accept third rate leadership.

If something drastic doesn't happen at the next election though, the people of this country will get everything they deserve.

I think spoilt votes should have representation. The percentage of spoilt votes should have equal representation in the House of Commons with empty seats. That way spoiling your vote would make some form of binding statement. I also think going to vote should be a legal obligation like in Australia. You have to go, spoil your vote if you want, but you have to go and vote.

Problem is there is and always will be the party hardcore supporters. What the UK needs is for politicians of all parties to be held accountable. From the individual politician to the whole party, especially with the likes of pre election promises to the public. Also expenses, any politician caught frauding the public purse should be automatically booted out of parliament and banned for life. Until the politicians are held accountable unfortunately nothing will ever change.

The sooner Labour are buried the better, we have blue torries, yellow torries and the red torries. Thank the Lord here in Scotland we have the SNP, doesn't metter if you don't like them aty least they are an opposition unlike Liebour.

Time for the older brother to step in and become the leader of the Labour party. If Camoron gets his way with all the policies this year and continues to command high poll, there is no reason why he would not call a general election to win a outright election. Then we will really find out how right wing this party is.

Poor choice as big brother is even more contaminated with the corruption and incompetece of New Labour.
