Immigration To UK - 'Fewer But Better' People Will Be Allowed In, Says Damian Green

Immigration Minister Damian Green Sunday Times

Britain will give priority to the "brightest and the best" immigrants under new plans to cut the number of foreigners settling in the UK, the Immigration Minister has said.

Damian Green is this week expected to outline the principles behind the Government's new "selective" immigration policy that will give preferential treatment to investors, entrepreneurs and world-class artists, dancers, musicians and academics.

Under the planned reforms "fewer but better" immigrants will be allowed to settle in the UK, with those who lack the skills to "help drive economic growth" or contribute to UK culture facing greater scrutiny.

Mr Green told The Sunday Times: "What we need is a system that...goes out to seek those people who are either going to create jobs or wealth or add to the high-level artistic and cultural aspirations we have.

"Getting the number down is the absolute key but what I am aiming at is fewer and better."

The Conservative MP said those wishing to live in Britain will have to show "genuine serious usefulness to British society" and prove they are not totally dependent on benefits.

He added: "We want permanently to make Britain the most attractive country in the world for the brightest and the best. The era of mass immigration is over."

According to Mr Green, the UK turned down 385,000 visas last year, detected 27,000 forged documents and is currently stopping 1,000 people getting on a UK-bound plane each month.

Seems to me that the bigger problem is that once one person is allowed in, whether they are able to be productive or not, they may well have a large extended family of their own, and their spouse may also have family, who all then follow. So one immigrant potentially leads to dozens.
Or so it seems to me, and probably everyone else living in an area that they no longer recognise. Such significant changes to communities may arise from perfectly valid immigration rules, and I know that these changes have happened over a couple of generations, but that doesn't much help how alien you feel in your own town / country.

My husband & I (both British) moved to NYC 5 years ago with my husband's job after having to jump through hoops to get a visa. We dutifully pay our taxes & pay full rent. I am not permitted to work on our visa and abide by that law.

I just shelled out $1800 for dental work and $800 for a trip to the gynaecologist out of my own pocket as health insurance here is so expensive. We neither get, nor expect any financial assistance from the U.S govt, in fact I can hear the mocking laughter at the Social Services department ringing in my ears at the mere thought... Just saying.

In the past 30-odd years, anyone who has voted for any of the three major political parties in the UK has effectively voted for EU and immigration. But they didn't tell you that at the time. Your rosette-wearing, local parliamentary candidate didn't knock on your door and say Vote for us and we will flood the country with immigrants, did they? Not likely!

We are bound by European Law and if we suddenly refuse to take anyone, except those we consider "acceptable", we will be contravening European Law and will be punished accordingly.

So although the Tories would now like to change the rules of the game, they are powerless do to so. The only way this country can call the shots on who comes in and who goes out, is to get out of Europe completely. Successive Prime Ministers have promised us a referendum on Europe, which is binned when they get into power. The Whitehall elite have not let us have our say, in case we vote NO.

Perhaps its time to decide which of the people here already we do not want and when we shall send them home not how many more we allow in.
I am not a racist and I do not advocate no immigration I think its enriching to a point but unfettered immigration is the death Knell of our nation we can either act now or pay an heavy price later when the worst happens and a terrible backlash occurs Red xxx

'is currently stopping 1,000 people getting on a UK plane every month', what nonsense. On a recent flight from Lisbon an announcement came over instructing anyone who was not an EU national to make themselves known on arrival at Heathrow airport, a bit too late not to allow them in then isn't it? Next move would have been to claim asylum, then we would never get rid of them.
Just what the UK needs are dancers, musicians and artists.............NOT!

I understand the consept but this country & it population have seen & had enough of immigration we cannot support our own! let alone even more.OUR housing stock is almost depleted with less & less building going on due to the financial situation, the planners becoming dictators, our benefits system being raped, the "EU" trying to cripple our economy with demand after demand for extra money, the muppet pea brained government "just GIVING away our resourses to any one that cries poverty, even though they can afford items like space exploration, which even we are unable to afford, although are involved in,its now time to close the doors untill we sort ourselves financially.its like us buying a 46 inch tv but owing 6 months rent on your home YOU DON"T DO IT !!! FOR CHRIST"S SAKE GET A BRAIN!!!!

Immigration in itself is not the problem. If we adopted the same system as the US, Australia and Canada where you have to be self funding, have privatre health insurance, buy or rent your own home without any help in the form of benefits, and be able to do a job that can't be done by one of their own.
The problem WE in the UK have with immigration is that so many come here with no intention of supporting themselves, they expect (and get) benefits for everything and come first in the queue for social housing.
We are a small island who's infrastructure cannot support the influx that we are still experiencing, especially from Eastern Europe.
Checks should also be made for criminal records BEFORE they are allowed in and anyone comitting a crime once here must be deported immediately along with any dependent relatives with no chance of appeal.

if peole are so good in their own countries then why come here
04:26 PM on 01/30/2012
And then why do British people emmigrate ? there are 6 million Brits living abroad, now what would happen if they all decided to come back and live in the UK? can you imagine what the unemployed figures would be then? and the amount on JSA and housing benefit etc.. I bet there aren't 6 million immigrants living in the Uk. so what is the best of 2 evils ? easy answer..

British people vote with their feet and leave the UK in order to get a better life abroad.

Repatriation sounds a more plausible and sensible solution.

All these figures sound impressive, but this has been going on for decades , if people want to come here they should be able to speak and understand the english language and have a trade or skill that will be a benefit counties economy Every government tells us they are going to ' curb ' the flow of immigrants coming into the country but nothing seems to be done Australia seem to have the best grasp on thier situation regarding this matter , so adopt their stratergy and stop using all this human rights rubbish ,what about our rights to live in our own country under our own laws ?!

Definitely. All rather too little too late after New Labour let millions in previously.
