Political Party Funding - Action Needed To Avoid Further Sleaze Scandals, Say MPs

Party Funding

PA/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 29/01/2012 07:12 Updated: 29/01/2012 07:12

The Government must take action to clean up political funding before another "scandal intervenes", a Commons committee urged today.

MPs called on the Coalition to stick to pledges to reform party financing "in order to remove big money from politics".

Last year a 15-month inquiry by the Committee on Standards in Public Life proposed a £10,000 cap on donations in a bid to end "cash for influence" scandals and corruption allegations - partly paid for by a £23 million-a-year taxpayer subsidy.

But the three biggest parties united to rule out asking voters to pay up in the present economic climate - even if the change was delayed until 2015.

Although the Lib Dems are supportive of reforming party funding, Labour and the Tories can't agree because of their links to the trade unions and big business.

Labour - which is nearly £10m in debt - relies on union funding for the majority of its income. The Conservatives receive large donations from wealthy individuals in the City, something neither party appears willing to change.

The Political and Constitutional Reform committee concedes that a cross-party solution "will not be easy to achieve" but called on the Government to look again at the proposals.

"Public confidence in politics risks being further undermined if some future scandal intervenes before a solution is in place," its report warns.

Committee chairman Graham Allen said: "Public concern about party political funding continues to undermine confidence in politics and MPs.

"It is high time this issue was resolved. The publication of the report of the committee on Standards in Public Life provides a golden opportunity for the Government to get this issue back out of the box marked 'too difficult' and make a serious effort to find a fair solution which is acceptable to all parties."

If you don't want sleaze then cleanup Parliament Mr Cameron, this below shows us how Hypercritical you MP's are does it Not?

Read how David Miliband is channeling his earnings of up to £21,000 a day through a controversial tax loophole @ http://nowtweet.it/owi

Should those people using >Large Scale Tax Avoidance< systems be classed as >CRIMINALS< and prosecuted? Don't the Milliband Brothers set a >Fine Example< how Not to Behave as MP's?

No to party funding, the taxpayer should not be forced to pay for these parasites.

Using tax payer funds in this way is completely out of order. No different to the political levy that was abolished for Trade Unions.

The parties must fund themselves.

Why should the tax payer fund political parties, absolute disgrace. Don't we fund the MP's enough with out funding their election campaigns too, would not mind that much but most of the pre election promises are pure lies.

yes. if they want to fund their party they should use their own money

All in this together?

I would have thought that if our elected representatives could bring themselves to behave properly then there would not be a problem.

You speak like a person of hope, if only your hope could rub off onto these people, they may then be inspired by another of the graces - charity, but unfortunately we are all left without faith. I wonder if they read these comments, I should imagine their researchers may, well if that's the case they would be well advised to listen because there is a very cross section of the population here.

Sadly, I have to say it looks very much like that!

it is very much like that, the elites version of democracy at work, take from the masses while filling your own and those of the extremely wealthy's pockets, the rest of us are canon fodder and slave labour, a dispensable commodity.

In Other parts of the world politicians join ring of corrupted mafia bosses and this is the only way they could have fund? In some parts of the world, politicians pays in their millions to run their agenda before the election and than once they win, total programme is run by under world and their bosses, the politicians are there to sign and attend the offices, meeting, foreign trips and business deal and total business is given to the mafia bosses who had invested heavy with the person their have put there? Samething taking place here in UK because politicians are the one who travel in foreign land and know other businesses so general public is there to pay their tax and live few pound worse of or better, this is the thinking we have been given to think? Yes 20 to 30 years ago it may be the case but now politicians comes so they first secure their family members financially than worry about rest, this is why these duck houses and second home scandle been exposed? How about keeping your mouth shut because those communities leaders who voting for you, says keep your mouth shut about this because if you do not you may loose? Higher boss been told this and they tell law mean those police officers who are corrupt and willing to keep their mouth shut because it is happening in other parts of the world so why not here?

"Public confidence to be further undermined" says the Report! How can it go any lower is my question? It certainly won't be uplifted by any solution that takes party political funding out of the public purse ie the taxpayer. Why on earth should anyone think that a solution to private funding buying allrgiance of politicians eg honours, policy favours etc is a fair and reputable solution? The answer is to independently investigate, and prosecute and bar from further office anyone found guilty of such discreditable and value-less behaviour - I may add, ruling out Tony Blair, David Cameron, and all associated with such allegations if proven. It's simple - no donation above £5000 to be acceptable, no state funding, and the parties cut their cloth according to their revenue. At least this would be above board, and would get public support and credibility.

Now we know why no one in Government is prepared to stop the Bank Bonuses. Stop Bonuses = stop Party funding.

Parliament was devised by the rich, for the rich, ordinary people don't get in cabinets, commons are resigned to the back benches to vote the party line and have no say regardless what the people are conned to believe.

Yes like your party Ed, old lad, money is becoming hard to get for all our predictable 3 parties, they don't trust us it appears. Goodness, it's hard going in goverment for the alliance, however, we can continue with the lies and deceptive practices to hold the people at bay. Then Ed old son, we can hand the responsibilty to the predictable Labour party, by then myself and Cleggy will be worn out but richer for it..NO we will never improve Britain, not while our EU governors are always at our throats, but what can we do, we don't have the guts to do as the people want us to do and get out. We will depend on your lot to run thge gauntlet of anger hey Ed, my old pal......
