Prince Harry Reveals Worries For Queen In Andrew Marr Radio Times Interview

Prince Harry

Prince Harry has said he does not believe the Queen can carry out her public duties without the Duke of Edinburgh.

Harry suggested that his 85-year-old grandmother needs to have Philip, 90, physically with her at royal engagements - something that is important at their age.

Philip suffered a heart scare before Christmas and spent four nights in hospital after having a blocked coronary artery cleared and a stent fitted.

He has remained the Queen's constant companion throughout her reign, which will reach its 60-year milestone next week.

Harry's comment was made in an interview with broadcaster Andrew Marr, in which he paid tribute to his grandmother, implying she was stoically carrying out certain duties that at her age she should not be doing.

Mr Marr's interview with the prince appears in the latest edition of the Radio Times magazine, which has the Queen as its cover star.

Harry, interviewed before the Duke's heart scare, told the broadcaster: "Regardless of whether my grandfather seems to be doing his own thing, sort of wandering off like a fish down the river, the fact that he's there - personally, I don't think that she
could do it without him, especially when they're both at this age."

The broadcaster also wrote: "Prince Harry reflects on her ability to turn up, still smiling, at places she might not want to be: 'These are the things that, at her age, she shouldn't be doing, yet she's carrying on and doing them'."

In 2010 it was announced that Philip would reduce his workload, in acknowledgement of his advancing years.

Before the Duke turned 90 last June, he stepped down as president or patron of more than a dozen organisations.

But 2011 was still a busy year for the Queen and her consort, who made a historic trip to the Republic of Ireland, hosted a state visit by US president Barack Obama and made a long-haul flight to Australia to tour the nation and attend a gathering of Commonwealth leaders.

The next 11 months will also be a hectic period for the Queen and Philip as they travel across the country celebrating her Diamond Jubilee.

Prince Harry's comments also feature in a BBC1 documentary Mr Marr has made, a three-part series called The Diamond Queen, the first episode of which will be broadcast on the day of the Diamond Jubilee anniversary - February 6.

The broadcaster also spoke for his programme to the Duke of Cambridge, who said his grandmother has "carved" out her own path between "private and public and duty".

William told Mr Marr: "I think she doesn't care for celebrity... and she really minds about having privacy in general.
"And I think it's very important to be able to retreat inside and be able to collect one's thoughts and collect your ideas... and then to move forwards."

The Duke added that it was "a very tricky line to draw between private and public and duty and I think she's carved her own way completely. She's not had a blueprint."

David Cameron also told the broadcaster a little about the regular private meetings the Queen has with her prime ministers.

He said: "She's seen and heard it all, but I think she wants to be in a position where she knows everything that's going on... she asks you well-informed and brilliant questions that make you think about the things you're doing.

"I think you reveal both to her, but also to yourself, your deepest thinking and deepest worries... and sometimes that can really help you reach the answers."

William should be our next monarch on the throne, no doubt about it. Charlie is a fool to himself. He married an old trout like Camilla and lost the trust of the British people when he gave up on our Queen of Hearts, Diana. Bypass Charles, he is not worthy of becoming King.

Yes, to be honest, they ARE!
Whether you, personally, appreciate it or not, they are doing their duty - against all odds - representing our country and maintaining a monarchy in which many people still believe.
I strongly suspect, given the option, both would prefer to be plain Mr and Mrs Mountbatten living out their retirement, with the paper and their slippers, just as the rest of us are able to do!

It's a terrible comment on our ageist society that people want the head of state to abdicate purely because of their age & give the job to a young person, simply because young people are considered 'cool'. Perhaps "in touch" means someone who is more common, dumbed-down & less posh than the Queen.

If the Queen abdicates, it will mean that there is no-one left from the older generation at a national level in politics, government and authority, thanks in part to a 'Dutch auction' between the main political parties to skip generations & outdo each other with increasingly younger leaders.

I agree, she should not abdicate because of her age. But remember the majority of those at the head of the justice system are well aged, which combines politics, government and authority.

I'm 19, and a lot of people my age hold a huge amount of respect for the Queen and her family.

Prince Harry is a compassionate man and cares deeply for his family, friends and anyone he hears about or meets.Diana would be very proud of both her sons in the way they have turned out.The queen in my opinion should really consider stepping down not because of her age etc just to enjoy the remaining years with her husband.afterall everyone retires sometime! Can someone answer this question for me please? As Charles is divorced and has married a divorced woman is he allowed to be King?In my opinion Prince William should step up and be King

Think it's high time that the Queen abdicated as I believe the country would benefit from a younger, more forward thinking ruler. I would love to see Prince William as our king as he is totally in touch with reality and I hope that Prince Charles would step aside when the time comes.

She will never abdicate as she sees that as failure. It was abdication that killed her Father prematurely

no, it was lung cancer.

Well firstly because he loves his Grandmother, so do many of the British people. Secondly, because like all kids, they worry how much longer she can go on working for her country and people of Britain. There is not one politician in Wetminster ,who could ever command nor deserve this kind of loyalty and caring, as our Monarch can..........

Time for her to let Charlie have a go maybe.

NO WAY!!!! That man is a disaster waiting to happen, I say as do many I know that we skip him, he is nor getting any younger and have William, its about time we had a young monarch who can do the job!!! AND be in touch with the REAL world.
09:28 AM on 01/31/2012
I reckon that is the plan. Judging by The wedding and Royal duties since, William and Catherine are definitely being primed for the job. Eeeeeeeeeeeew just the thought of Camilla parading round as Queen makes my toenails curl!!!!
