The death of the son of a US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel from gunshot wounds was a "tragic accident", a US Air Force spokesman has said.

The 13-year-old boy was injured at a house in Souldern, near Bicester, Oxfordshire, on Sunday morning and died at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford earlier on Monday with his family by his side.

His father is understood to be based at the USAF base in nearby RAF Croughton.

The USAF spokesman said: "The 13-year-old son of an active duty US Air Force lieutenant colonel assigned to an academic exchange programme at Oxford University has passed away after a tragic accident.

"All possible support and comfort is being provided to the family. During these difficult times we respect the family's request for privacy."

Thames Valley Police, which is investigating the death, said it was not treating the incident as suspicious although a spokesman added: "The exact circumstances are yet unclear".

A South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We got a call at 10.06am yesterday to Souldern following reports that a 13-year-old male had suffered head injuries with a shotgun."

A police spokeswoman said: "Thames Valley Police is continuing in its inquiries to help the family establish what has happened.

"It is believed there is no third-party involvement and so no one is being sought in relation to the incident."

The teenager's death has been referred to the coroner for Oxfordshire.

Worrying news. Does this mean US forces personnel are exempt from British laws regarding guns. Why would he require a loaded shotgun at home?
09:42 on 31/01/2012
Americans!, guns!, nothing unusual there, our country!!!!!
09:28 on 31/01/2012
Why was the gun loaded?

I think we should all wait for the verdict from the Police before we point our fingers. The family must be going through HELL! Whether it is a Gun, Car, Bike, Boat, Train or Fall it was a tragic accident so no more snide remarks about how this tragic event could of happened.

Could "have" happened!!
And anyway, since when did you become head of the thought police?
17:49 on 31/01/2012
Depends which part of the country you live, I am from Yorkshire so Could of happened is correct for people such as me.

All owners of shotguns in this country must follow a strict protocol when handling them. It is too early to cast judgement as to what happened as we do not know from what is written here.
09:24 on 31/01/2012
We already do. We have some of the strictest Gun Laws in the World, it's the Police that let us down.

The American obsession with guns strikes again. :o(

Let's wait for the details, we don't know anymore than what we read here and that's not enough info to pass comment and certainly not enough to pass judgement. Let's just be sympathetic and pass our condolences to this family in their time if grief and save the recriminations for later when the facts emerge.Tragic waste of a young life and devastating for his family. RIP.

Well said!!!

The weapon should have been locked away in a Certificated Gun Cabinet that has been checked by the police ? or does that not apply to American servicemen. ???????

What were they doing with a gun? I really hope that US servicemen are not walking around Britain with weapons.

I have a grandson who is 12 so very near this young mans age. Even the mere thought of loosing him breaks my heart. So God knows what this family are going through. Obviously this was a stupid accident that probably could have been prevented, but kids are nosey. God rest young man.
09:19 on 31/01/2012
Indeed kids are nosey, it is their nature. I cannot imagine a situation where, if a child of that age has access to a shotgun and cartridges, he would not be tempted to put a cartridge in the gun at some point.
I shudder when I think back to some of the stupid things I did as a kid, but fortunately nothing to do with guns.

Cars kill far more people, ban all cars now, and boats, bikes, kitchen knives, rope, petrol, glue, ponds, rivers, trees and dogs. Cigarettes, drink, mobile phones, drugs, polythene bags.........everything.

And in the real world?

Thank you DavidBDBDesigns for an insightful comment that uses logic to prove your point. Trees are only here to fall on and crush people or for people to fall out of. Trees, unlike guns, have no other purpose, but to kill and injure. Yes, trees should indeed be banned.
