Hurtling through fire, crawling through mud and enduring icy waters: the Facebook photo for the twice-a-year Tough Guy challenge bears the strapline “I Bequeath my body to the Tough Guy Killing fields.”

The Tough Guy contest held in Telford, Shropshire over the weekend, was designed to test human endurance limits, with each event on the specially designed course coming with a ‘pain and fear’ rating.

However whilst sprinting through nettles, bloodily scrambling over tyres and inevitably swallowing a lot of mud along the way, Tough Guy organisers also rate the ‘relief’ factor after finishing the endurance course.

The challenge involves relying on other competitors to navigate through netting, struggle through freezing waters and hotfoot over coals. Take a look at some of the braver Tough Guys below.

This looks hella fun! I like the outfits. Are there women or just some guys in skirts?
