Keira Knightley: 'I Get Less Criticism In America' Admits 'A Dangerous Method' Star

Keira Knightley feels she gets more support as an actress in America than at home in the UK.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star - who allowed herself to be spanked while tied semi-naked to a bed for her new film A Dangerous Method - admitted to GQ she sometimes gets upset by criticism of her work.

Knightley said: "The Americans are generally a lot more supportive.

"They generally like the work a lot more than they do here. It is what it is, I suppose. It could just be that I'm not to a lot of people's tastes. Which is fine."

She went on: "Well it's not, obviously. You want to be to everyone's taste... But. I think it's better to do your own thing rather than try to please everyone and just be this mushy thing in the middle..

"Sometimes it's like water off a duck's back, and sometimes it really hurts... and then you go away and cry for an hour or so, and then you pick yourself up again."

The 26-year-old actress also revealed all she could remember about her turn as Elizabeth Swann in the first three Pirates Of The Caribbean blockbusters was that it was "wet and hot". She also claimed she was given no script to act from.

She added: "The second two took two years, but in my memory, they've just been mushed into a big, hot, wet thing.

"When we started shooting the third one, there was no script. You'd literally be given a scrap of paper and told, 'Say that'. You'd go, 'OK, but where am I? What does this mean?' And they'd go 'Don't worry about it, just say it.'"

The full interview is in GQ, out now.

"The Americans are generally a lot more supportive."

Speaking as an impartial Canadian, she is mistaking "more supportive" for "less discriminating."

That's a snarky comment from a guy using the name of a movie character played by American Robert Redford - America has always been supportive of good looking talented actresses, whether they are British or Canadian - don't forget the words of the poem - Send us your poor, your huddled masses, your talented attractive chicks yarning to be stars.

"America has always been supportive of good looking talented actresses, whether they are British or Canadian..."

You make my point for me. "Always been supportive..." This equals less discriminating. America likes everybody (not literally - but MORE of everybody) While the average British critic/movie goer is more discriminating. (Snobbish to be unkind.)

She gets less criticism in America ... that's because no one knows her.

I'm afraid American's have allowed themselves to be over whelmed with the 'Celeb Culture'.
A packet of crisps would be wow'd if it'd been in a film.
I agree we are in danger of it happening here.

Nothing wrong with Keira Knightley. Perfectly good actress. The differing reactions perhaps reflect firstly that the Americans are always overwhelmed by any kind of fame (it is going that way over here) that they dont actually stop and look or study the individual concerned as fame is all comsuming.

In England we appreciate the famous but within our acting system you have the real stand out actors and those whove become absorbed within what we call the luvvie set. Luvvies do not relate to the rest of us or down to earth life. They are not in any way bad just live a seperate existence from the rest of us and will spout ideas and opinions that might as well have come from planet Zog for all the relevance they have to peoples real life.

I quite enjoy Keira Knightley, even when she is appearing in a less than spectacular film. She's thin because that's the way she is, not because she starves herself. Why are people so judgmental?
05:35 PM on 01/31/2012
Well she is right, here in the US she is pretty darn popular, and theres no real reason why!?! She just is! lol But after seeing those last 2 Pirates movies I can totaly believe they were just given scraps of paper each day and told "Do this" especially that 3rd one!

Seems to me that Knightley has to take her place in the British system.

The British consistently outperform America in production of fine actors.
They seem to work together in lots of outstanding plays, television and smaller movies - with acting, not just special effects.
From Maggie Smith, to Emma Thompson...

It seems to me that, over time, Knightley has an opportunity to become whatever she wants.

Everyone gets criticized in their work. With actors, it's just that the criticism is more published.
But, the pay is so much better...

The people in the UK judge more and are more negative than those in the US. Saying that in the US there are so many has beens and former stars that get ignored because their last hit was 10 years ago but in the UK they are still classed as movie stars.

As an American all I can say is: Eat more biscuits with your tea dear; you're too skinny! ;-)
02:17 PM on 01/31/2012
That's because she promotes a bad body image for young girls, she's extremely thin and its an unrealistic natural way to be and stay healthy.
she looks like shes wasting away with lips being the fattest part of her, girls look up to her and she promoting nothing but if your as thin as me your beautiful this has to stop bring back Marylin Curves please.
03:28 PM on 01/31/2012
bring back Marylin Curves please.

You have missed a lot of curves. A lot.
06:04 PM on 01/31/2012
Why so judgemental? There are plenty of people whose metabolic rate keeps them slim, not skinny. I think she is fine, leave her in peace.
09:53 AM on 02/01/2012
wow you think size 0 is slim that's shocking, skinny is far more appropriate indeed.
when you have a child or know someone who have been through an eating disorder, you'll have far more understanding as to why celebs like this one have a duty to portray good body image and she is far to thin. Young teens see her as the idea of perfection and will do anything to have an extremely skinny frame like hers, she is the biggest idol to 'Proanna' eating disorder sites doesn't that tell you something.

If she stopped the pretentious pouting that might help. Good luck to her though. She has a successful career is well paid. What more does she want?
