Prince William Heads To Falklands As Argentina Threatens 'Economic Blockade'

Prince William

As tension continues to simmer between Britain and Argentina over the Falkand Islands, Prince William is believed to be en route to the disputed territory.

The Duke of Cambridge's arrival, ahead of a tour of duty as an RAF search and rescue pilot, will come as the Royal Navy prepares to send one of its most advanced new warships to the area, HMS Dauntless.

Argentina has already sparked controversy over its "William the Conqueror" taunts, suggesting that the Prince will be wearing the uniform of a "conqueror" when he deploys to the south Atlantic.

William's posting to the remote outcrop, which Buenos Aires calls Las Malvinas, is due to last six weeks.

His departure for the Falklands as the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict nears and with threats from Argentina to effectively impose an economic blockade on the islands by cutting off Chilean flights.

On Wednesday, the president of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner made public a threat to block all flights from Chilean airline LAN, effectively severing any link with the outside world.

Cristina Fernandez

Even if LAN resisted Argentine pressure to stop flights between Punta Arenas in Chile and Mount Pleasant airport, Argentina could refuse to let the airline use its airspace, which would have the same effect.

Civilians in the Falklands would then be solely reliant on a military flight, an 8,000-mile journey from London via Ascension Island, an island close to the equator, the Guardian reported. This would prove too expensive, effectively blockading the island.

"If the LAN Chile flight is cancelled it would be pretty difficult to resist the already credible thesis that there is an economic blockade of the civilian population of the Falklands," a senior British diplomat told the Guardian on Wednesday

William's arrival on the island follows an announcement that HMS Dauntless, an ultra-modern Type 45 destroyer, is due to set sail for the South Atlantic on her maiden mission in the coming months. She is expected to replace frigate HMS Montrose in the region.

HMS Dauntless

The Royal Navy has rejected suggestions the decision to send the destroyer to the area was a riposte to the heightened tensions over the islands' sovereignty and said the ship's deployment was long planned.

William's posting - as part of a crew of four RAF personnel - has been similarly defended by the Ministry of Defence as a "routine deployment" for a Sea King pilot which forms part of a "normal" squadron rotation.

But it has been branded a "provocative act" by Argentina.

In the latest salvo, the country's Foreign Ministry said it "rejected the British attempt to militarise (the) conflict" and expressed regret that an heir to the throne would arrive wearing "the uniform of a conqueror".

David Cameron and Argentine president Cristina Fernandez have previously accused each other of "colonial" behaviour, while Argentine official Sebastian Brugo Marco last year said the country could not ignore the "political" implications of William's deployment.

General Sir David Richards, the Chief of the Defence Staff, dismissed the claims, saying: "I can absolutely tell you it wasn't and isn't designed to be."

He is just doing his duty as ordered and so should be left alone to get on with it. Would Argentina stop him and his crew from rescuing one of their citizens in distress? I think not.

He may well be Prince Willain to us. To the RAF, for whom he works and when he is flying an RAF helicopter on duty anywhere he is Flt Lt Wales. I would have thought the economic situation in Argentina would be of more concern to them than a British pilot, flying a British helicopter in British airspace. Who own the Islands after all?

Youd think so wouldnt you but Argentinas Governments have a track record of gobbing off over the Falklands whenever their economy/popularity is on the rails...its a national pastime to divert attention, but again dont worry as im sure the next Government will no doubt be another military one (as they seem to have dictatorships quite regulalay dont they)?

True, but Britain is hardly any better. Thatcher's government was on its knees before the Falklands War and it was saved by the jingoism. The current coalition government is struggling now so hey-ho, how about a bit of colonial harumphing to take people's minds off domestic issues. Politicians - they're all as bad as each other.

I am sure Faulkland Islanders can obtain their wares from the US instead. However perhaps some improvments to the Airstrip on the Island would also help enable civilian flights to land there. Ships carrying freight to and from the islands should be provided a military escort, or able to call upon jet fighter assistance if requierd.

We need to make sure that the Argentinians know who they are messing around with !. That we will not allow some back street bully to opress the citizens of one of the worlds most powerfull nations. We may not be one of the big three, but our military can still deal a deathly bite. !.

AIRSTRIP!!!! We've built a full-scale INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT that handles military and civil traffic, not much traffic admitedly but it's there if we need to rapidly reinforce the islands.
06:34 PM on 02/02/2012
Well if what you are saying is correct there is nothing to worry about. All they need is an Antonov to do a shuttle run to Florida once a month and collect supplies !.

Mate the airstrip at Mount Pleasent is massive and can take any aircraft currently in service, its the most modern airfield/airport in South America.

I read that comment before it was removed, and I cannot see why it was deleted. Several comments have in fact been removed, not just one. Including mine. I take it your moderator objected to me calling members of our armed forces the bravest and best of us. Can I assume that HP doesn't think they are?

As opposed to Argentina respecting the wishes of the Islanders to remain under British protection? I hope the blockade fails miserably. Argentina is welcome to allow the Falkland Islanders the right to self determination.

You had better read what the Falklanders want not your imagination!

Does the Sea Viper missile system work on that ship yet - if not, it's rather embarassing seeing as how that's pretty much the only weapon it carries apart from a deck gun.

Costs twice as much as an Arleigh Burke, has less than half the firepower. The Type 45 is a joke of a ship.

Seriously, it's time.

It has a better radar, and very probably crew - I don't remember the Vincennes' crew being able to use their impressive radar to spot a climbing airbus at 40 paces.

It works, it has a 45 cell launcher, the 4.5" gun you like..lol..a couple of phalanx/couple of 30mm and can be fitted for 2 quad cell Harpoon missiles and Land Attack Tomahawk missiles...this ship has been confirmed, even by the yanks as the most advanced warship in the world at this time..we have 2 in service, 6 more to come (we hope) mate that ship has the capability that previously took 5 type 42 destroyers.

So its clear then should we just bow and say to the Benny's bye bye sorry we have to go because the President says we must and we must spit on the graves of all those brave and decent soldiers and other people who gave their lives in defence of the principal that the Benny,s and bennettes wish to stay British or should we just say stuff em
And Mrs Fernandez go away and take your silly little threats and do as you please with them or just plain sod off Red xxx And feel free to keep Cashmoron as an hostage but don't hold your breath waiting for a trade Red xxx

Hmm, not sure Prince William should be going to the Falklands, of all places, at this time
04:32 PM on 02/02/2012
It's OK he's only doing Air Sea Rescue, I'm sure the must be plenty of people who fall in the warm waters around the Falkland Islands......
