Chris Huhne Resigns: He's Entitled To A £17,000 Payout

Chris Huhne could get over £17,000 as a severance payment following his resignation as energy secretary.

The Cabinet Office has said that Huhne is allowed three months' worth of his £68,827pa salary under the 1991 Ministerial and Other Pensions and Salaries Act, £17,207.

Huhne resigned on Friday morning after the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed he would be charged with perverting the court of justice. "The Crown Prosecution Service’s decision today is deeply regrettable. I’m innocent of these charges and I intend to fight this in the courts and I’m confident that a jury will agree.

“So as to avoid any distraction to either my official duties or my trial defence, I am standing down and resigning as Energy and Climate Change Secretary. I will of course continue to serve my constituents in Eastleigh.”

In his resignation letter to the PM, Huhne said he would mount a "robust defence" against the charges, adding: "I have concluded that it would be distracting both to that effort and to my official duties if I were to continue in office."

Chris Evans, Labour MP for Islwyn, said Huhne should turn down the cash: “Last year Chris Huhne stood with Sayeeda Warsi as she called for former Cabinet Ministers to forfeit their severance pay. If he didn't agree with her, he should have said so - so he should now forfeit the £17,207 he is entitled to.

“And if the Tories don't make it clear that they believe Chris Huhne should give up this payment, it will be clear that they think there's one rule for them and their Liberal Democrat friends and another for everyone else.”

If he really believes that covering the country in windmills is the answer to all the world's ills, perhaps he could spend his payoff on one for his own garden.

Well there is a lot of hot air at Westminster to power the national grid !

maybe not all the worlds ills but it would certainly help our power problem, not that i want to see every hill covered in them, but with people demonstrating about nuclular power, wave power generation,& come to that matter anything else that might improve our needs what else can be done, everything & anything suggested is protested about by some group or other as NO ONE wants a power source near them !!

He is guilty of nothing YET. He has been accused, thats all. Would you be happy to guilty before you had a chance to prove your innocence?

well he will have to pay his legal fees won't he?

he could give a charity a cheque (preferably cash) but he may put a stop on that a cheque when he realises that someone else may benefit from his action.

he has more money than sense, so why should he care?

i would certainly think any application for legal aid would be rejected simply due to his financial standing,it they are stopping people a benefits claiming legal aid this would be automatic "OR at least it should"

he would probably find a way to get legal aid

think he is that sort of person

He wouldn't dare. I must admit though I am loving the way all these politicians are falling over each other trying to prove they are more anti bonus than anyone else. Be interesting to know though how many of them earned big bonuses before becoming MP's. And how many are still padding the old expenses?

What I would like to know is further additional information about how many MPs' are raking in an additional fortune from ( Cough, Cough ), back - handers for fronting Big - Business, and by being Non - Executive Member's of various Companies.
Now, lets play - Pass the Brown Envelope; ( Cough, Cough ).

what "YOU MEAN HE" would not dare ! to begin with only a person with MORALS would refuse to accept it,secondly you are dealing with a politician,& has been seen in the last 20 years they are ALL liers, fraudsters,& in it just for the money & prestige !! we the public are nothing but a cash cow waiting to be milked,& a thorn in their sides,UNTILL they want our votes, thats when you see the LIES really come to the front with ALL PROMISES but which are convieniently forgotten as soon as they are in power.!!

Here's an interesting idea, since Cameo Clegg and the Con - Dems is/are struggling with the idea around putting a REAL Worker upon the Boards of Bank's etc.

Indeed, now they have a Vacancy within Cabinet, then perhaps they can fill this opening with a REAL Member of the REAL Working - Classes, since should we ever wait for something like this to be recommender by our Self - CONserve Career Whipped Politicians, then we will wait for EVER whereby so far in UK Political History TRUE Democracy has always come last for the under Represented People.

I think he should have the £17,000- as soon as he can prove that his favoured wind farms can operate at 50% efficency. That of course will never happen and 50% efficency is still unlikely to repay the enormous costs of building them!

£17,000 not bad

should have been 17months

not as though he needs the money is it?

why doesn't he give it to a charity?

and do some good for a change1

it would be the first time!

Don't worry Folk's.

One Multi - Millionaire ( Huhne ), will be replaced by another, Multi - Millionaire in Cabinet to retain the harmony of the Rich - Classes.
