John Terry Stripped Of England Captaincy By Football Association

John Terry Loses Captaincy

The Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 3/02/2012 10:55 Updated: 3/02/2012 12:42

John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy by the Football Association.

It is the second time in his career that the defender has lost the international armband for off-pitch reasons.

Terry was called on Friday morning by FA chairman David Bernstein, who told the Chelsea player of the decision. The defender has so far made no comment.

The move throws into doubt Terry's eligibility or desire to play for England at the European Championships this summer, and could ignite tension between the governing body and England manager Fabio Capello, who insisted that he wanted Terry to remain as captain.

In a statement, the FA said Terry had "not been excluded from the squad".

Terry is due to stand trial in July on charges of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game last October. The player has maintained his innocence throughout, vowing to fight "tooth and nail" to clear his name.

Terry was originally due to stand trial this month, however the FA's hand appears to have been forced when it was rescheduled to July, meaning the player could go into the European Championships with a serious charge hanging over him.

The possibility of Terry leading out the England team at the Euros prompted criticism from anti-racism campaigners, with Piara Powar, the executive director of Football Against Racism in Europe, recently pushing for the FA to "do the right thing".

"The seriousness of the allegations mean that he can't lead the nation," said Powar.

Capello, who is currently out of the country, is not expected to make immediate comment on the situation. The England manager has stuck by his captain in recent months, maintaining Terry was "innocent until proven guilty".

Terry was first stripped of the captaincy in 2010 following a sex scandal with the girlfriend of fellow Chelsea team mate Wayne Bridge.

This morning, bookmaker William Hill made Steven Gerrard the favourite to lead England out for the first game of the Euros.

FA statement on John Terry:

Following the decision to adjourn the court case against John Terry to July, The Football Association confirm he will not captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved.

The FA Board expected the trial to be concluded prior to the European Championship. Further to Wednesday’s confirmation that the trial will not take place until after the tournament, the Board has discussed the matter in detail and has collectively decided it is in the interests of all parties that John has the responsibilities of captaincy removed at this time.

This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament.

The FA Board can confirm that he has not been excluded from the squad and that Fabio Capello is free to select him for the Holland fixture on 29 February and the European Championship.

FA Chairman David Bernstein has spoken to both John Terry and Fabio Capello to explain the facts to them. Fabio Capello has not been involved in The FA Board discussions which reached this conclusion, but understands that The FA Board has authority to make this decision.

Fabio Capello will take the decision as to who will be made captain moving forward.

This decision in no way infers any suggestion of guilt in relation to the charge made against John Terry. The FA will be not be making any further comment on this matter.

I have just one point of contention to make....the lad who got caught up in the London riots were arrested, put in front of a judge and shifted off to the lock down while the fires were still burning; but John Terry's trial is postponed until the summer because he is a footballer?

As Much as i do not rate , or like John Terry and as a person or player........
FIRSTLY I feel that he has had a Kangaroo Court by the FA....where is the innocent until proven Guilty....
SECONDLY Would the same action have been taken had JOHN TERRY been WHITE....
THIRDLY I believe that all the different cases on Racism highlight this horrible and inexcusable attitude in Football but sadly have a negative effect as it comes out and appears that all WHITE Players and supporters are RACIST and all BLACK Players and BLACK fans are hard done by..
FOURTHLY If this is the case ..Then why do all the Black players automatically get released for the AFRICAS CUP whereas only ENGLISH Players are guaranteed release to play for ENGLAND but N.Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland players are not guaranteed release for their countries internationals.....but only at the discretion of their managers????
MAKE IT FAIR FOR ALL ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD

As much as I have some serious gripes with the FA, for loads of reasons from the Wembley Stadium debacle, succession of failed England managers ('yes men'), the corporate grip on our football, behind the scenes affairs, FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley...etc etc

...I have to say though, they have done brilliantly in helping stamping out racism in football in this country, done a great job. I myself have worked with a few organisations like 'Show Racism The Red Card'. No doubt there's still work to be done, the moron's out there reverting to social networks & the likes to channel their narrow-mindedness! Turning stadiums into family friendly atmospheres has helped too. When I used to go to games in the 80's, the racism was horrendous, & I went to my first game over the recent Christmas period in over 15 years, & the transformation was astonishing!

So I support they're decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy, not because I believe he's guilty, I strongly support the notion of being 'innocent before being proved guilty', it's an unhealthy attachment to the game, & takes the focus away, we saw what happened today with the moronic fans who chanted against Anton's Brother Rio! Recent events, minority in the main shows whilst we've made huge advances, there's still problems to be addressed!

I'm impressed. The CPS deems his prosecution to be in the "public interest". So they will spend tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of pounds prosecuting him and the maximum penalty is a £2,500 fine!

Is the world to believe that this action shows that Britain takes prejudice seriously? Be serious. Britain is the most anti-Catholic country in the world. Racism is everywhere. Anti-semitism is virtually a national religion. This action is pure hypocrisy.

The FA were left in an impossible situation. If they let the situation remain the press would jump down their throats at allowing a possible racist be the captain of the England team; Removing Terry as Captain has now left them open to accusations in the press of branding John Terry guilty without a trial. Either way the press has once again exasperated the situation, and the FA has shown they are not clever enough to deal with the English press.

What a role model he is. Apart from his own goings on...
Mother, convicted thief. Father, convicted drug dealer. Brother, home breaker.
Sounds like a family from the back streets, this supposed to be someone a young wannabe footballer should be able to look upto not shake your head in disbelief.

He should be judged on his own actions and not those of his family. His on and off pitch behaviour make him unsuitable to represent England. As an ambassador for England and as a role model for other players he is expected set a higher standard than players for league teams.. However his behaviour alone should be the only source of criticism.

What footballer is a 'role model'?

Actually, Terry and other footballers do quite accurately reflect British society. Look at Chris Huhne. And Robin Cook. Impressive lot.

I do not understand some of the comments, about innocent until proven guilty. If one misbehaves at their place of work, they are usually suspended on full pay. An investigation is then carried out and the results presented, from which a decision of innocence or guilt is then ascertained. Most of us are sometimes guilty of emotional reaction due to subconscious ethnic fidelity, which should be resisted at all cost in cases of such nature.

I can't believe footballers are UNAVAILABLE for Court until late July. Justice is more important than football surely. The FA decision is only half right anyway because Terry should NOT be allowed to play for England inthe Euros having been charged with this offence for which on video evidence he is clearly guilty. It has been a ploy by the defence to delay matters .Woodgate and Bowyer were not allowed to play for England when charged so why is Terry different. He has led a charmed life up to now but should get his comeuppance this time. Not that it will bother him .

Actually, that isn't true. You must be very careful about suspending staff.

The last sentence in your post is purely vacuous.
07:59 AM on 02/06/2012
It is only vacuous are you offended because I hit the nail on the head? I have a feeling you got my point, so I will not waste my time further.

It is not the first time he lost the captaincy and i would give the job to Steven Gerrard full time!!!!!

I cannot believe that the FA have shown the disrespect for the England coach for goodness sake, he should have been in on the decision. Another contributor is absolutely right, OK for a female MP of the Left to abuse whites but it appears the knives are out for Terry before he is proven guilty with a queue of wussy PC Liberals waiting to applaud the decision, it makes me angry. One rule for the our ethnic non Caucasian brothers and sisters and another for Caucasians
10:54 AM on 02/04/2012
Davie, we are all Ethnics and don't forget, a mongrel nation to boot. Diane was being flippant, after all she has not had a checkered history of racial antipathy towards whites. The FA board made the right decision and were following a general rule in any workplace. If an employee comes under suspicion in relation to his contractual duties, suspend, carry out a thorough investigation, then re-instate or fire. An England football captain that could not be respected in the field, makes for a lack of focus and respect from fellow team mates - disasterous.

How many times are you going to publish this same polemic. You like the word "Ethnics" without understanding its meaning. Please. Post once.

the case has not even been heard in court, so what happened to innocent untill proven guilty ? On
a football point of view never understood why he was made captain anyway nor rio ferdinand, or david beckham they have all been captain during one of the worst momenst in the history of england they won nothing achieved nothing in fact even failed to qualify. Here are some names of world class players or so they have been labeled BECKHAM OWEN FOWLER FERDINAND GERRARD LAMPARD TERRY COLE ROONEY many played in the same team and won nothing if fact didn"t even get near winning anything they failed to qualify for the euros just about beat greece in a qualifaction game and people keep calling them world class players, there good above average but not one of them is world class, because if one was we would have done a lot better no matter about two or three or even four in the same team together, theres not one i would cross the road to watch, seen a few world class players moore charlton B best messi pele beckenbaur cryuff and a few more none of these come anywhere near, i suppose i"ll have to put marradonna in but ather the hand of god his a cheat simple as that

Does anyone recall those big banners the players hold out at the beginning of matches and the 'oath' they swear to for fair play and being against racism? Yeah, well, if players don't respect that part of the game, then they should be punished. Fabio Capello insists he wants Terry as the Captain regardless of his supposed racist comments which shows that he himself doesn't really care all that much about eliminating racism in the sport. Looks like England has 2 people in leadership roles are shouldn't be there...well, now one.
