England Captain

Bookmaker William Hill has made Steven Gerrard the favourite to be England's new captain.

John Terry, who is due to stand trial on charges of racism in July, was stripped of the captaincy this morning by the Football Association.

Gerrard, who is England's vice-captain, is the 8/13 favourite to skipper the national team in their opening match of this summer's European Championships.

"The decision to strip Terry of the captaincy potentially raises a number of issues, including the questions of whether Terry will still be selected to play and whether Capello is happy with the decision, possibly taken regardless of his opinion’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Other candidates in the running include Frank Lampard (5/1), Rio Ferdinand (7/1), Scott Parker (8/1), Gareth Barry (9/1) and Joe Hart and Ashley Cole (16/1).

I agree with Capello that John Terry is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

I also think he should never have been captain in the first place. A captain should be respected by his team mates. How can you respect anyone who goes behind your back and have an affair with your wife ? He is a complete disgrace. How can his England team mates trust or respect him ?. Give the job to Gerrard, he has always done his best for the team.

Terry apparently had an affair with Wayne Bridges' ex girlfiend! A bit different to WIFE!
As for Gerrard does he not have a chequered past- assaults in nightclubs etc!
Joe Hart is potentially the only current England player without any history!
And like Peter Shilton did he can command on the pitch!

Shrek ! Why has no-one mentioned Shrek? A wonderful footballer, the equal of David Beckham any day in terms of looks, and someone we can all be proud of, even the grannies amongst us.
He can double up as the team's mascot too, and save a bit of money.

shrek he is rubbish your right to compare him to Beckham as he was average at best.
as the Great Best said, Beckham can not dribble, he can not tackle he cannot head the ball apart from that he is ok.

It should be Scott Parker...any other option I can think of doesn't have the leadership qualities, self sacrificing attitude and team ethic other than maybe Gerrard, and if Terry is found not guilty and wants the armband back...it could get sticky.

Scott Parker is not vocal enough. He is too new to th eteam and would not command respect from the likes of Cole or Rooney! Gerrard is a thug and has shown previously that his captaincy consists of demanding the ball and charging forward to lose possession or shoot high and wide!

I recieved notification of your reply- Then that it had been removed. Having read it before it was removed; I CANNOT comprehend why it was removed! There was nothing remotely offensive about it-so here is my response-
I cannot deny that Scott Parker is a committed player who gives his all. I just fail to see him as captain material. He is very much improved since his move to Tottenham- But most England captains need to have experience as captain at club level. Let's hope Stuart Pearce has the answer.
