'The Iron Lady' Panned By Critics In Argentina

The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep may have been nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, but Argentine critics have panned the film during its premiere in Buenos Aires.

The film opened in Argentine cinemas amid a furore over the Falkland Islands, over which Thatcher's Britain and Argentina fought a brief war 30 years ago.

In the movie, Thatcher is shown ordering the sinking of the Argentine warship Belgrano, which killed 323 sailors and remains controversial because the ship was considered to be outside the war zone.

She also dismisses the entreaties of the American ambassador to settle the dispute peacefully, suggesting that as a woman, she has had to "go to war every day" to maintain her hold on power. Reducing the decision to wage war to a question of feminism "is absurd, to say the least", the newspaper Clarin wrote in a review.

Others praised Streep's acting, but panned the script as mediocre. "A character so controversial for her own citizens, the citizens of the world and especially for Argentines, Thatcher deserves a better movie," huffed La Nacion.

Buenos Aires and London have escalated a war of words ahead of the anniversary of the Argentine dictatorship's ill-fated invasion of the islands on April 2, 1982. More than 900 soldiers and sailors were killed on both sides by the time Britain seized them back.

The movie tries to humanise Thatcher, but "it didn't fool me", said Mario Huguet, 75, a psychoanalyst who called her a word unfit for publication after seeing the premiere. "It presents her as a senile grandmother, but the Argentine dictators also got to be old and pitiful."

Huguet's wife, Nora, also 75 and retired, said they saw the movie because she loves Streep. "She's wonderful. But it didn't change my opinion of Thatcher."

Britain has sent one of its most advanced warships, the HMS Dauntless, to the islands, as well as Prince William, a Royal Air Force helicopter pilot, ahead of the anniversary.

Argentine Vice President Amado Boudou said that Britain has falsely accused his South American country of threatening another invasion in order to distract Britons from their economic worries.

I wonder if they bothered to watch it before they panned it? Like a film about Mrs Thatcher would ever get a positive response in Argentina anyway!

Tin pot south American country with 20% inflation criticises film about former British prime minister who had the guts to repel their invasion force. Hardly surprising is it?
22:51 on 05/02/2012
She 'had the guts to repel their invasion force'

It's a pity so many British soldiers had to spill their guts over Goose Green to prove it.

Why don't you talk about the soldiers that died in WW1, WW2, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan.....why are you chosing just one battle from the last 100 years?

This war was to liberate the islands and British Citizens from a dictator, thats what soldier do for a job.

Privatization was the biggest con made by Thatcher! Sorry the majority of shareholders are politicians they made a mint from it and still are! Blair, Brown whatever they are all in it together to make money for themselves! And now Cameron finishing off what she started and making sure there are no jobs for ordinary hard working people. And to top it they were lucky to still have the ships to do the job for the Falklands as they were supposed to have been scrapped! LOL! Lets get in the real world!

Envy! OK. Yes I am envious that I did not think of becoming a politician and feathering my own nest instead of looking after the citizens of its own country. LOL!

Did anyone expect the Argentinians to react in any other way?
13:46 on 04/02/2012
We could all do with Maggie being at the helm now. The Argies wouldnt want to cross swords with her again in a hurry and as for Ed Milliband the now Labour Party Spokesman formerly leader she would have this little boy for breakfast. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quite right - best prime minister we had since the second world war!!

this University well known for its left wing attitudes, used the following questions to come to this conclusion
They were asked whether they agreed with statements about typically right-wing and socially conservative politics such as, 'Give law breakers stiffer sentences,' and 'Schools should teach children to obey authority.'

their final conclusion was
Clearly, however, all socially conservative people are not prejudiced, and all prejudiced persons are not conservative.'

the author and the university are also looking at behaviour towards
We are even interested in fictitious groups and attitudes toward non-human animals.
i am afraid only those of very limited intelligence will be fooled by these sad bigots.

"This university well known for its left wing attitudes" so you're already prejudiced. Now what does the study say about limited intelligence and prejudice again?

This Criticism can be taken from where it comes.

I was a member of the armed services when Lady Thatcher was PM. We always knew we would receive her unconditional support, unlike today

I think Margret Thatcher was the second best PM this country has ever had.

The Argentine press just have sour grapes becasue she kicked their butts 30 years ago!
22:13 on 03/02/2012
NO - British soldiers 'kicked their butts' at Thatcher's behest and sadly many spilled their own guts over Goose Green in the process.

I know one thing for sure....every soldier I have known has never complained about doing their duty for Britain.

I never joined the forces, never had the balls myself. But I do know one thing....British soldiers never complain, so don't you start doing it for them!
10:47 on 05/02/2012
I think you have forgotten something, the Argies invaded those islands and were prepared to kill the squaddies, all 50 of them, trying to defend the islands.....so maggie is the bad person then is she?
22:27 on 03/02/2012
Your either too young to know what Thatcher & her government was like or have a short memory, i can remember all too well, taking the Falklands back was the ONLY good thing she did! She closed or sold off almost all British Industry, introduced the poll tax (remember the riots?), had dole queues longer than any time since the second world war & had she stayed in power would have killed off the NHS (more hospitals & hospital wards were closed during her terms than at any other time) the tories have always wanted a private health service only instead of giving people the choice. She was probably the worst prime minister we've ever had not one of the best! i suppose if the Argies try to take the Falklands again & Cameron stops them, he'll go down as the Iron Man & be regarded as one of the best? Even Churchill, who has gone down in history as a great leader during WW11 was kicked out of office after the war because of his policies, the British/Allied Forces kept Thatcher in for another term by doing a great job in the South Atlantic had it not been for the conflict she would have been removed long before.

In my 65 years I can say Thatcher was the best PM.The worst by a country mile-BLAIR followed by Brown!!!

well said sir.
