Alex Salmond BBC Six Nations Rugby Ban 'Bonkers', Claim Upset SNP Politicians

SNP politicians have hit out at the BBC for its decision to withdraw an invitation to Scottish first minister Alex Salmond to sit on a panel during its coverage of Scotland's Six Nations Rugby match with England on Saturday afternoon.

According to The Sun the SNP leader had been booked to appear on the programme alongside ex-Scotland international Andy Nicol and former England player Jeremy Guscott.

But the paper reports that he was axed at the last minute after BBC bosses feared he would use the platform to offer his opinions on Scottish independence, despite having given reassurances that he would steer clear of politics.

SNP MSP Joan McAlpine asked on Twitter whether the policy would extend to other political leaders commenting on sport.

If BBC ban Salmond from supporting Scotland in Six Nations will they also ban Cameron supporting team GB in Olympics?

John Finnie, the SNP MSP for Highlands and Islands, complained that the broadcaster's "ill-considered withdrawal" of its invite to the first minister to be part of the rugby coverage today did not feature on the BBC Scotland lunchtime news.

And Pete Wishart, the SNP MP for Perth and North Perthshire branded the decision "appalling".

"The Beeb need to get a grip of their coverage," he said.

But a spokesperson for the BBC said it would be "inappropriate" given the current debate about the future of the United Kingdom.

"The BBC's obligation is to ensure it achieves due impartiality across all its output," they said.

"Given the nature of political debate around Scotland's future and the proximity of local government elections in Scotland, it was decided that it would be inappropriate to give undue prominence at the moment to any single political leader in the context of the Scotland-England game."

In a statement issued on Saturday, the SNP's Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP said the decision was "bonkers" and said it was the sort of thing he would expect to see in a "banana republic" rather than in the United Kingdom.

"The serious issue here is the BBC’s excuse about the ‘political debate around Scotland’s future’ – which will be underway for the next two-and-a-half years," he said.

Are they suggesting that Scotland’s First Minister is to be banned from ‘business as usual’ programming by the BBC’s political bosses in London until 2014?

"The BBC is Scotland’s national broadcaster, and these are serious questions which raise important issues about the BBC’s coverage of the referendum – which must be fair, impartial and consistent to all participants, and at all times.

"The concern is that these decisions are being taken by the BBC’s political bosses in London in a high-handed, ad-hoc manner – and that is in the interests of no-one in Scotland."

It's an odd reason to give for not having him on the programme.

A better one would have been that he has never been an international rugby player.

Kenneth Clarke has a jazz programme, so I'm sorry that Alex Salmond doesn't get to commentate. Has someone been leaning on the Beeb?

It's a fair point by the Beeb.

Have they considered the reason why they axed him is because he is not a sports pundit. I mean do they expect the welsh first minister to be a pundit during the england and wales game.

Then they (re)considered wrongly. Eck is a sports pundit, although I'm not sure if his expertise extends to rugby right enough. He has written regular columns about horse racing though, and can discuss fitba' as well as the next Hearts fan. (that might not actually be a recommendation though)

The BBC is impartial is it . Try getting them to bradcast a programme about there being no global warming. As for King Eck try getting a staright answer out of him on any subject

i think salmon might be shocked,if england had a referendum on whether we still want scotland in uk the answer will be NO

Yes you think. It,s the 42.5 million payed to the treasury everyday from scottish oil and gas. That has been keeping your bankrupt country alive. So think before you speak

You have a very quaint notion of the union. If england wanted to get out of the union with scotland, then england would be the one leaving the UK. You cant kick others out, you can only depart from it yourselves. That, I'm afraid, is the nature of ending an international treaty.
11:02 PM on 02/04/2012
Yes but WLQ you can not take all the good parts with you and leave all the debts to others.
07:30 PM on 02/04/2012
This seems rather a bizarre decision given the run through scottish.english battles back to Robert The Bruce that was shown by the Sports team as part of the prematch entertainment.

They are bias towards the BNP so what's so different with SNP ?????????????
07:02 PM on 02/04/2012
The real question is why was he invited in the first place? Being the First Minister of a part of the UK does not make him an expert in sport. What could he add to the discussion if he took part, and what was lost from the discussion by his not being there? What type of balance would there be in the discussion with two representitives fro Scotland, and one from England? His only reason for accepting the invitation was to use the discussion to promote his political platform. It is easy to agree not to say anything political before the event, but how would they stop him once he started during the event?
06:52 PM on 02/04/2012
Now the question must be asked " Why " was Salmond invited to be a guest ?
06:51 PM on 02/04/2012
Nice to see where the British tax payers funded RBS is being spent...Well played England Bad Luck Scotland.
06:22 PM on 02/04/2012
The BBC should invite Alex to the England v Wales match.......see if he turns up then?
06:12 PM on 02/04/2012
A ridiculous decision. Why invite him, then when he accepts, decide to withdraw the invitation at the last minute? Alex Salmond would be unlikely to bring up the subject of independence on a sports programme (unless asked to), when he has so many other opportunities to do so. It's yet another own-goal for BBC management - and another useful weapon for the SNP's cause.

If you think the First Minister would not interject the subject of Independace in to any televised discussion, you are sadly mistaken. The only reason he accepted in the first place was to be able to slip in a comment about hoping the six nation cup would soon take place between independant nations, or something similar. He is a one issue person. Everything is about independance in his mind.
07:42 PM on 02/04/2012
Yes, I believe he can even spell it. Perhaps he accepted because he was invited?
06:12 PM on 02/04/2012
If Scotland votes for independence will they still have to put up with the bbc or will they have to pay for it like Sky tv. What a vote catcher that would be, given the choice to be ripped off or not.
06:28 PM on 02/04/2012
You mean paying for a channel that is advert-free or endure five minutes of commercials every ten to fifteen minutes and having each corner of the screen plastered with mini-"comming next" and "dont miss" texts?
06:43 PM on 02/04/2012
No I mean having the choice not to pay the bbc to squander my money paying news readers and the like £250.000 a year,as for the commercials I use the remote a lot.
