Ed Davey, New Energy Secretary, To Set Out His Green Credentials

First Posted: 06/02/2012 07:16 GMT Updated: 06/02/2012 07:24 GMT   PA

New Energy Secretary Ed Davey will seek to establish his green credentials on Monday, declaring there will be "no change in direction or ambition" after the departure of Chris Huhne.

In a concerted effort to reassure environmental groups and Liberal Democrat activists, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will join him on a visit to bolster the message.

Huhne, who earned a reputation as a fierce defender of the Government's climate change priorities, resigned on Friday to fight charges of perverting the course of justice.

The promotion of Davey from a role as a business minister raised fears among some campaigners that the agenda might lose out to Treasury cuts under his command.

A note of caution was also sounded by former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell against any watering down of commitments on a policy area of "iconic" importance to the party.

And the scale of the challenge facing Davey was underlined by the revelation that 101 Tory MPs had written to the Prime Minister calling for a cut in taxpayer subsidies to onshore wind farms.

Davey, who a spokesman pointed out had campaigned on environmental issues since he was a student, will begin his first full day in the job meeting graduates looking to take green jobs.

"I have long believed in the need to marry our economic and environmental agendas," he will say.

"Greening the economy isn't just good for the planet, it's good for the wallets, purses and pockets of every British citizen too. My priorities are very simple: green jobs, green growth and getting the best deal for energy bill payers.

"My department is already implementing bold and ambitious reforms - like electricity market reform and the Green Deal - to unlock private investment, drive innovation and build a resilient, green, competitive economy. It's now my job to see those through.

"There may have been a change at the helm, but there'll be no change in direction or ambition."

Clegg, who was due to join Mr Davey at a testing facility for green homes near Watford, will warn the UK must "wake up, or end up playing catch up" with emerging economies.

"In today's world the savviest states understand that going for growth means going green. Low-carbon markets are the next frontier in the battle for global pre-eminence," he will say.

"We have every reason to be confident: the combination of enviable wind, wave and tidal power, a world-beating research base and a proud history of engineering give the UK a clear competitive edge. So we're already in pole position. But the reality is we need to sharpen our elbows if we want to stay ahead.

"I want the UK to be the number one destination for green investment. We're in this race to win."

Davey also marked his first day by announcing the 155 community projects that have succeeded with bids for a £5.1 million pot from the Local Energy Assessment Fund.

do you remember the days of basic honesty ,come up with something that was good for the planet and you could get a grant and or a tax break for making it, well those days are gone or going because its lost revenue, example the DOT say there are 57000 vehicles that dont pay road tax because they are good to the planet but because they fall below the 100gram emission regs, they have worked out the loss of revenue on just 57000 vehicles is crucial they are in trouble.

You used to get a small reduced road tax for an LPG vehicle, they are about 80% cleaner than petrol /diesel but they stopped that , it even cost £150 to register an LPG vehicle that,s been converted.

VW blue motion vehicles and the like are tax exempt but the government are looking at lost revenue not the planet ,once they decide to tax planet friendly vehicles you know its all about the money .
Another stunning example is solar panels ,to many people get them and the tax revenue goes down from the energy companies ,in the states the government have made it law in some states to have catylitic converters on wood burners along with licences and fines if you dont conform ,
It has little to do with the planet ,more about lost revenue ,in a world of shrinking resources the governments are going to tax us beyond death and the old values wont count for anything !

you have wonder ,but not for to long why does a ltr of cooking oil cost nearly as much as a ltr of diesel ? well the two have something in common they will both run a diesel vehicle ,and the reason behind the price is lost road tax revenue ,so if someone invents a car that runs on water we had all better look out,im working on one that runs on politicians so far it dont do much to the mile !

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, another five minutes of my life utterly wasted reading this article, I'm with oobuc5 on this one, its just so downright sad that there are people in this country of limited intellect prepared to swallow any of this never mind all of it. Meanwhile China opened yet another coal fired power station today, same as yesterday, the day before that .........
India on the other hand burned enough trees for their cooking pots to make enough curry to stretch to the moon and back at a mile wide.
Russian people did similar but also burned several billion cubic centimeters of natural gas to warm its people suffering minus 20 deg C temperatures. Brazil on the other hand basked in 80 degrees but continued chopping down rainforest (the lungs of the planet) to export to the good ole USA who all got in their V12 chevy trucks to pop 5 yards to their local wallmart for beauty products and WE, IN THE UK, WERE THINKING HOW MANY BLOODY WINDMILLS CAN WE FIT ON YONDER HILL

the only green thing thing going on here is people like this with 2 homes paid for by the public taxes
all of his travel paid for gas /electric /food clothes , yes its easy to be green when everything you touch is paid for , does this bloke have solar panels on his roof ? does he drive a biodegradable lead free none violent car ,no of course he dont look at all of these ministers look at what they drive ,when the public pick up the tab they drive v8s and v12 guzzlers ,they dont need solar panels because its all paid for people like this are paid to sit there and dream up even more ways to tax us while saying its green and your saving the planet while we get rich !

Your right oobuc5, these guys or girls get a goverment job and then proceed to impliment their own narrow views on the public. Ministers should have Mini's to run around in after all the only ferry one person to and from office to office.
