McFly Support Dougie Poynter In Booze Battle

A Little Help From My Friends

In pop years the McFly lads are hitting old age and it seems they are mellowing with maturity after giving up booze in support of band member Dougie Poynter.

24-year-old Dougie checked himself into rehab last year after he split from girlfriend Frankie Sandford of The Saturdays and his pop star pals have joined forces to give up drinking in a show of solidarity.

"I'm not missing the booze. I had to give up because I always took it too far. Now I'm clear-headed, I like being hangover-free - I get a lot more achieved."

He added: "Once you get through that barrier at events and nights out, you realise you aren't getting drunk and it's fine."

However, I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! champ Dougie didn't always find it so easy to turn down a glass of bubbly revealing he enjoyed drinking alone.

During his time in the I'm A Celeb jungle, Dougie said: "I felt sad all the time for, like, years of my life if I really think about it. I loved being by myself and getting battered (drunk)."

But the star recognised his boozing became more problematic after he split from girlfriend Frankie.

He said: "That's when it escalated. I wasn't comfortable in my own skin any more. So I went and saw this bloke and he sent me off to rehab. It was hard. It was really hard, in fact. But it was also one of the best things I ever did."

Dougie's twinkle-toed bandmate Harry Judd credited giving up alcohol with helping him win BBC ballroom dancing contest Strictly Come Dancing.

"Me and Dougie don't really drink and neither does Tom, so Danny might end up getting wasted on his own."

And the boys are also pulling together for Harry, who is currently taking part in the Strictly arena tour, so they can get back on track with their McFly commitments.

A source told The Mirror: "Tom, Dougie and Danny are joining Harry on lots of his tour dates so they can squeeze in some rehearsals ahead of April. He can't be in two places at once, so they've all agreed to take their practices to him.

"They're basically seeing it as a huge road trip. And it gives them a change of scenery from the studio."
