Syria Violence: Russia And China Veto 'Incomprehensible And Inexcusable'

Downing Street has condemned Russia and China for vetoing a UN resolution on Syria as violence continues to escalate, saying their position is "incomprehensible and inexcusable."

The prime minister's official spokesperson told journalists on Monday morning: "Russia and China are protecting a regime which is killing thousands of people. We find their position both incomprehensible and inexcusable.

"By supporting that regime, they are strengthening it and allowing it to continue with that violence."

It comes as troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar-al Assad stepped up attacks against civilians, with reports of 50 people being killed in the city of Homs on Monday.

Opposition groups claim that rockets have bombarded the city, while an explosion has burst an oil pipeline leading to the main refinery.

Homs has become the centre of armed opposition to the President Bashar al-Assad, the council said.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Saturday's veto a "travesty", Reuters reported.

The Foreign Secretary urged Arab nations to push ahead with efforts to force a peaceful solution in the wake of a widely condemned veto by Russia and China ended hopes of a UN-backed push.

The prime minister's spokesperson said the UK was now considering what action it could take through institutions such as the European Union.

"The objective here is to look at how we can bring countries together and apply pressure internationally on the Assad regime.

"For example, there will be further discussion in the EU on the issue of Syria. The [EU] Foreign Affairs Council meets at the end of this month, so we are considering whether there are further measures and further sanctions."

"It is our intention to return to the UN. Clearly, we hope that Russia and China will reconsider their position. There are alternative ways of applying pressure on the Syrian regime through the UN - for example, through the General Assembly - and we are thinking about those options."

William Hague will update MPs on Syria at 3:00 on Monday afternoon.

Russia and China just like to vote opposite to what the West votes. It's what they do.

Either Britain should stop meddling in othwer peoples countries or it should get on with a war against Russia, China, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Somarlia and Argenrtina all at the same time

Do we have Army to start with and than would you volunteer for that mate? I am not because not on my name please? I have freedom of choices here. In Islamic countries no matter who rulling, if they are communist or else or democrastic party, they still have rule of law along with their religion belief so it can never be change so what freedom are this people looking for? Propaganda machine in war everyone use it and most used by Britain and US because this two countries happen to be in war for over 500 years with someone or many so yes this two countries have experience in using this tools? If opposition says we want change? Yes have it and fight for it but through dialogue, peaceful mean, democractic way, use UN, use NATO and other peaceful mean so world know what you fighting for? Are you fighting for more corruption as equal as the rulling party where you are not getting the fair share of the fire crackers or you feel low when you see others ruling who you do not like it? Why civilians have to die because they would be butchered by both gangsters. Would you want to support this? I do not?

Downing Street and Syria's Bashar team have a lot of sorting out to do and Russia I am sure will do everything to help find some mid ground on these matters.

Just found this post today on News Journal Stirring Trouble Internationally http://www.stirringtroubleinternationally.com/2012/02/06/why-would-anyone-become-a-politician-if-not-to-get-rich-and-enjoy-the-perks-of-office/

No it's not just you mate. Let's sort our problems out. Does it matter to us who rules in these places? Not much to be honest. Meanwhile things that do matter to us are just glossed over.

Who can be surprised by Russia's and China's stance? Those in power there regard the successful downfall of a corrupt and brutal regime elsewhere as a potential threat to their own interests.

The answer is quite simple. You cut diplomatic ties with Russia and China. Both countries are hurting because of the world recession and if they see their export markets disappearing, they will soon step into line. Once Europe and the US follow suit, the Russians and Chinese will soon be less worried about their arms trade to Syria.

Winter is coming on and Europe needs Russian gas to keep itself warm. Meanwhile, the US needs Chinese manufactures to hide the massive loss of income that the middle class has undergone over the last 20 years.

So except for the fact that it's a complete non-starter, your plan is brilliant.

'Incomprehensible and inexcusable' is The Government describing Russia nad China or the attitude of this government towards these countries? state murder and gross human rights violations have been committed, and continue to be committed, by both countries. The Democracy movement in China was violently crushed and there is continued oppression. In truth we all know why China and Russia refuse to stand against Syria. It is the same reason the government refuses to take credible action against Russia and China. It's all hot are, China doesn't give a damn about British mettle unless it's metal that's been nicked for scrap.

I agree with you Nosher. I would be more impressed with a Government that could get grit on our roads before it snows than one that could bring down President Assad.
