Britain's Most Bizarre House: Suspension Bridge Island House On Market For £1m (PICTURES)

Cornwall House Island

Britain's only house with a private suspension bridge has been put on the market for £1m.

The three-bedroom 1930s property sits on Towan Island in Newquay, Cornwall and is currently owned by Lord and Lady Long.

To reach their front door the couple have to negotiate a 70-ft-high, 100-ft-long footbridge. Having bought the spectacular home £500,000 in 2001 Viscount Long, 83, and his wife are reportedly looking for somewhere more easily accessible.

According to Metro.co.uk past owners include Sir Oliver Joseph Lodge, the inventor of the spark plug.

The house has direct access to the popular Cornish tourist beach below, as well as a large breakfast terrace overlooks the Atlantic.

However there may be another reason why the Lord and Lady wish to be rid of their unique home. In 2003 they threatened to take legal action against young ravers who held late night parties on the beach.

According to the Daily Telegraph they sent a letter sent to the police, tourism officials and their local MP complaining of "another night of hell in Newquay".

It ia obvoius that you have never been to that part of Cornwal, even in summer the sea is so cold as the mediterranean would be in November. Of scorse if you are thick skinned and have plenty of goose fat to rub on expecially on the private parts you will be ok for tenty minutes or so the trouble is that you would smell awful. I frequently go on holiday well south be it Italy, Spain, Portugal,Greece, Cyprus. The sea water is warm, the views are stunningst, the food and wine are esquisite and most important the weather is guranteed. So if you want to freeze to death that is your choice, and enjoy the fish and chips, sausage and egg, saveloys etch all with an abundant serving of ketchup. What more would you ask? Enjoy

No amount of money would get me living in London. Why would anyone want to live there. Horrible overcrowded crime ridden cess pit.

I live in a very nice London suburb in West London with countryside literally 10 minutes walk away with lots of parks and ameneties I am in and at the same time I am out at the same time. Because it is a very sought after area house prices have spiralled to such an extent that i can agfford to move anywhere in the countryi chose to go if I want to.
It is obvious that you have little knwoledge of the area and it may well be that you have had bad experience and live ia a cesspit yourself. I feel very sorry for you.

Apparently the steps going onto the bridge get so slippery it is dangerous for them because of their age, and it would seem the inconvenience and risk involved may have triggered the prospective move.
I read it in the press this morning. Can't say I would be tempted that's for sure. Of course not a good place for those who sleep walk either!!!!

I can see why they want to move. It must be a tad tricky to drive the jolly old Rolls Royce across that bridge after a spiffing night out with your titled chums. Yep, I am only jealous 'cos I con't afford to live there !. Mebbe Lord 2 Jags might buy it, his cars are a bit narrower in the body, even if he isn't.

Nice position to jettison unmentionables on rockers one would assume. And good sport.
17:03 on 07/02/2012
How on earth did they build a house on top of that rock???
17:25 on 07/02/2012
Built the house first and put the rock underneath it.
