Dredd starring Olivia Thirlby and Karl Urban is not expected for release until the end of the year, but that hasn't stopped the film's producers from issuing some teaser photos of the pair opposite each other in the futuristic action film.

The film, directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) and written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), is a completely new adaptation of the 2000AD comics story and is not connected to the poorly received 1995 film, Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone.

Urban (JJ Abrams' Star Trek) stars as Judge Dredd, Thirlby (Juno) as the rookie Judge Anderson, and Lena Headey (300) as the villain, Madeline Madrigal, in a city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner.

The film's blurb reads:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary.

The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.

Dredd's the instrument of an authoritarian oligarchy who subjugate the population of their insular, beseiged city through brutal coercion.

Has there ever been a more topical time to be releasing a film lifted from that source material? Maybe some of the action could take place in Bashar Assad block.

Karl Urban has a pretty face but please, please don't take the helmet off! I'd rather take the long walk than see his face.

I had read that he would only do the movie if he kept his helmet on and stayed true to the comic so you may be in luck.

This actually looks less like the comic than the previous film.
IMO the previous film looked great, but the script stank and Stallone was a long way short of good enough.
Let's hope this has a decent script. And the Helmet stays on!
