Madonna is said to be fuming after South London rapper M.I.A. upstaged the pop star at the Super Bowl. Madge had no idea M.I.A. was planning to flick her middle finger at the cameras whilst singing the line: "I don't give a s**t".

The Material Girl invited M.I.A. to perform with her at the sporting event, which was watched by 111.3m American viewers, but she was far from pleased about the incident.

A source told The Sun: "Madonna wasn't impressed. She prides herself on professionalism.

"M.I.A. did nothing similar in rehearsals. Nobody knew she was going to pull this stunt.

"Madonna wanted to put on a world-beating performance. But everyone ended up talking about this girl's middle finger."

M.I.A. reportedly made the gesture after suffering with on-stage nerves and blamed "adrenaline".

A source close to the star added: "She wasn't thinking. She was caught in the moment and she's incredibly sorry."

According to the paper, bosses at The Parents Television Council branded the gesture the "selfish act of a desperate performer".

Chief Tim Winter said: "M.I.A. used a finger shamelessly to bring attention to herself, effectively telling an audience filled with children, 'F**k you.'

A spokesperson for the event said: "The NFL hired the talent and produced the half-time show. Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologise to our viewers."

I see that I am in the minority because I find MIA's gesture to be extremely foul. I also thought other similar gestures from madonna equally as foul. This is what happens when the fabric of society deteriorates.

I can't stand what MIA did. I think its really offensive to everyone. I used to listen to her music because it was reasonably alright but I will NOT anymore. I know my one-person boycott won't mean a thing to that little weasel but at least I won't have to think about it anymore.

As I recall from Live 8, Madonna is no stranger to the same gesture. Pot v Kettle?

Is she sorry, she's mentioned a lot and people seem to be talking about her. Mission accomplished it seems.

Don't worry darling, It's a typical media stunt.

Oh well, at a time when school kids randomly shoot people; when teenagers say oh I'm so sorry for committing a "thrill kill"; when at the end of her video Madonna throws a baby as if it was a football (which some teen will most likely imitate for fun)... who could care the least about a middle finger. If I remember correctly, Madonna gestured masturbation already 10 or 20 years ago publicly on stage....

Lots of great points of Madonna's "edgier" moments throughout her career already brought to everyone's attention. I guess I am having one issue with the whole thing... have you seen the video for this new song? M.I.A. does EXACTLY the same thing with the same dance moves exactly at that point in the video. So blah blah blah NBC, NFL and Madonna that you had no idea she would do it on stage. Oh because she didn't do in rehearsal? So I guess Madonna's professionalism only applies to NFL halftime shows not her videos or interviews or concerts etc....

If M.I.A. does this in the video, I'd be surprised if Madonna wasn't expecting it - or didn't encourage it. I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be a big non story. Oh, hang on, it came from the Sun, so it must be true!

Madonna is enraged?? The same Madonna who's song "Like a Prayer" was banned from some radio stations and caused an uproar in the catholic church because she had herself making out with a Black Jesus in front of a burning cross in the video? The same Madonna who's video/movies showed her engaging in a huge orgy with "everyone" on camera. Smh....she's enraged, lol, stop.

I dont believe either of them and i really dont care, thought they were supposed to have delay or something since that janet jackson thing? I'd be more upset at the person in charge of that than the "performer"
Both of them are lying, they do what they do and apologise afterwards and think that makes everything ok..haha

..."Madonna wasn't impressed. She prides herself on professionalism."

...then explain the embarrassing shambles that was 'Erotica', all her films & books are pretentious tosh too! Great in the 80's, but boring since.

Or does it just have that line? Not a Madonna fan, so I'm unsure., but it seems to suggest it's a lyric from the song. Oh, I don't really care enough to continue...someone else can, if they wish.

The song is called "I don't give a s**t" so why the outrage?
