MPs Will Have Pay Frozen In 2012/13, Ipsa Announce

MPs' pay will be frozen next year, parliamentary regulator the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) announced on Wednesday.

The group's chairman Sir Ian Kennedy said the group were "mindful of the conditions in the rest of the public sector" when recommending the 2012/13 pay freeze.

"We are exploring the broader question of how to reform MPs' remuneration to make it fair to MPs and taxpayers alike and, crucially, how to make it sustainable.

"In the meantime, we must be mindful of the conditions in the rest of the public sector where pay has remained static and where settlements will see most people pay more into their pensions too. While we address the longer-term changes which are needed, I believe it is right that we act in the interim so that MPs' circumstances more closely reflect those experienced by others."

MPs are currently paid £65,738 per year, and receive expenses for office costs and travel.

Ipsa said they were consulting on if pay would rise 1% in 2013 and 2014. George Osborne announced a 1% pay rise for public sector workers in the two years to 2015 in November. The body have been responsible for setting MPs' pay since 2011.

And, where are MPs on the question of their extremely generous final salary pension scheme? The details would bore many people, but can IPSA publish the size of the pot of money needed to pay for an MP with say 15 years' service, what he would get etc? And, compare this to a private person with the average employee contributions of (say) 5%, and the employer's contribution of say 8%, what pot would theu have built up after 15 years, and what pemsion they woukld get from this.
I dare them!

If you believe they will have a pay freez then you will believe anything. Their pay may not go up by much but i bet their expences will increase ten fold. Our politicions realy do believe that we the voters are thicker than 2 short planks. Every politicion should fill in a time sheet for each working day so that the constitients in his area can scrutinise his working day to see if they are getting value for money and i bet the answer to that would be NO.

Well they can just up their expenses. If they want to be more like the public sector then make then pay tax on what they get in kind through these expenses

Have the union bosses approved this, after all it does include Labour, and they need union approval for everything.

They say this every now and then to make it sound like theyre one with the people but in actuality they hold themselves apart from the people because they think theyre better than the people theyre supposed to represent. They care only about themselves and their friends and other people/countries. They will just up their allowances which we already pay for so it will all balance out, we fund their lives and they act like its a favour to us to do so.

Who are they trying to kid? We all know all they'll do is increase their allowances! If they wish to show "solidarity" with the public, let them take A PAY CUT!!!!!!!!

Haven't we heard all this claptrap before? I was led to believe that, in order to show 'solidarity', they had wage freezes in the past, but expenses were allowed to go up by more than enough to cover any shortfall (possibly leading to the relatively recent scandals) and then, of course, given the opportunity, they vote themselves increases in pay to bring themselves back into line with the private sector, i.e. they allow themselves to 'catch up', an option not allowed to the rest of the population. It's about time most of them tried living on £71.00 per week like Jobseekers have to, and maybe they should be penalised for 'under-occupying' their (two) homes, just like they want to do to people on housing benefit.

How about really being "mindful of the conditions in the rest of the public sector" and seeing as everybody and their dog seem to be losing their jobs at present finaly carrying out the promise of cutting the number of MP's that has meant to have happend for years but never ever gets done?

A wage freeze means nothing to MP's, they will "consult" to the private sector a little more to make up any difference. Also they claim everything on expenses, plus whilst at Westminster they eat and drink at vastly subsidised rates. 5.8 million would be saved if they stopped the food and drink subsidy to Westminster, now theres a good saving for a start.

True! They should be the same as their electorate:- pay for their transport to "work", pay for their meals (unsubsidised of course!), pay for any services (the bar etc) inside "the House" (WITH-OUT being subsidised) , in fact, they should be treated EXACTLY the same as the electorate, the salary should be common knowledge, and, if they fancy the job, they stand for election knowing what the salary is WITHOUT expenses etc! Still, it's our own fault for electing some of these scroungin, lying parasites!!!

Any pay should be performance related.

Symbolic but ultimately won't have any noticeable effect on the economy.

How about them taking a pay CUT

for how good for the country they have been in the last ten years a 50% cut seems in order

"We are exploring the broader question of how to reform MPs' remuneration to make it fair to MPs and taxpayers alike and, crucially, how to make it sustainable."

Why aren't MP's having the same conditions on pay and pensions forced on them in the same way other public sector workers are?

No mention of how they awarded themselves extra expenses last year, or that the Speaker managed to negotiate a further £8M (was it?) for MP's perks/upgrades around the HoC?

Dont worry though, as we are all in it together!

yes we are all in it together

deep deep poo

the government are forcing councils to make cuts that affect us all to our detrement

It is only fair they apply cuts to themselves

some may say to their throats but that conclusion they can come to on their own

now we should continue to give them the benefit of our anger, as we did for bankers

who knows we may get a result
