UK Weather: Snow Forecast As Met Office Warn Travel Treacherous

Uk Snow

UK weather is set to worsen as winter forecasts predict Britain could be blanketed by up to 3in (8cm) of snow as the country continues to shiver in the Arctic freeze.

Treacherous conditions on the roads are also set to get worse with freezing rain battering some parts of Britain, weather forecasters have warned.

The Met Office has issued an "amber" warning instructing people the north of England to be prepared for widespread ice, while "yellow" warnings for snow and ice are in place in a number of English, Welsh and Scottish regions.

It comes after three people died in sub-zero, icy conditions in the north of England this week, including champion cheese maker Mandy Reed and a 10-year-old boy Joshua Houlgate who collapsed in the snow.

Nick Prebble, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There will be a problem with freezing rain this morning which is going to start causing problems in southern Scotland and northern England.

"It will spread south east, and as it moves will turn into sleet and snow."

The cold front will move to North Wales and Yorkshire, hitting the Midlands by the middle of this afternoon, he added.

Mr Prebble said: "From midday onwards, there will be snow falling, with between 4cm (1.6in) and 8cm (3in) possible.

"The areas worst affected are likely to be East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the East Midlands.

"There may well be snow flurries in London by the evening.

"It looks like it is going to settle in quite a wide area."

Cumbria Police said freezing conditions were already plaguing the county's roads this morning causing a lorry travelling along the eastbound carriageway of A66 in Stainmore to jacknife and block the road.

This blast of snow is expected to last into Friday before clearing by the weekend leaving cloud and drizzle. The south east of England is expected to see some sunshine.

The sub-zero temperatures are set to improve slightly over the coming days, but the mercury will still struggling to get above 0C in many places overnight with a clear east/west divide.

The Midlands and south east of England will see readings of between freezing and 3C during today, while Wales and south west England could see temperatures of up to 7C. Scotland and Northern Ireland could reach a balmy 11C.

Mr Prebble added: "At the weekend and next week it won't be as bitterly cold, but it is certainly still going to feel very chilly."

The Met Office has issued a level-three severe cold weather alert lasting until Saturday and has warned of icy roads across much of the UK.

Drivers have been reminded that roads will still pose a risk even if the temperatures begin to warm.

The thick blanket of snow that fell over parts of the UK at the weekend caused major travel disruption with a spike in road crashes and breakdowns.

A handful of schools were also forced to close due to the adverse weather conditions, while Heathrow Airport axed half of all flights on Sunday night.

Award-winning cheese-maker Mandy Reed was found dead in a snowy garden near her home on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 47-year-old's death is being investigated by police.

In Hull, a man believed to be in his 50s was found dead in a park earlier this week. Police were called to an area near Woodland Road on Monday morning after the body was found by a dog walker.

He is thought to have frozen to death in temperatures which hit minus 7C (19.4F) in Hull on Sunday night.

In Castleford, West Yorkshire, a 10-year-old boy was found collapsed outside a friend's house on Sunday after going out to play in the snow.

Joshua Houlgate, who is understood to have suffered from epilepsy when he was younger, was pronounced dead in hospital despite frantic efforts to save him at the scene.

I live in North West. No ice, no snow, quite mild really. Get real and stopping printing such rubbish. It's winter for God's sake. It's going to be a bit cold.

Where in the north west is it mild? 12.23pm and the temperature is -1C at Blackpool Airport, quite low for mid-day considering Blackpool is on the coast.

I live in North West England (South Cumbria) and we have freezing rain, sheet ice and freezing fog. Schools are closed, there had been 96 accidents reported in Cumbria by 11am. Yes its winter and not half as bad as other countrys but the local councils are so unprepared. Of all the 'rubbish' usually printed on here i wouldn't count this article as one of them.

Bad Weather in South-East Corner of England.

Queen informed. Food Parcels Sent. Call-Me-Dave asked to put what's left of the Army on Alert. BBC Switches to "Emergency" 24/7 Broadcasting with correspondents freezing their bizounes off dispatched to be overlooking "the country"'s main arterial roads.

Monday Morning - Minus 5 in Glasgow, (Minus 8 in surrounding Rural Areas). News coverage =ZERO.

"We" are a Northern European Island.

It is Winter.

People in the Northern US and Canada and in Scandinavia ROFLTFAO.

ooo snow, its about time people realised that we live in the uk and we are alway going to get snow, just as we have always done in the past, sometimes it worse than others, but if the human race was not so wrapped up in its self and had a wee bit community spirit then the snow would not be as much of a problem.

For instance instead of 3 or 4 people clearning "their" parking space or "their" bit of pathway, glaring at people around them daring them to try to take their space. Work together and clear the whole street, you never know it might be fun.

Probably be sued if someone fell on the bit they'd cleared!

Don't know how we managed in Yorkshire inthe 60s & 70s with 3 foot of snow and drifts over 5 feet. Have photos of cars covered by drifts and roads impassable!

Big problem is that because of the milder winters over last 10 years or so many drivers have no experience of driving in these conditions.

O dear what can the matter be;
it may as well snow until Saturday,
and then continue the rest of the week,
may reach ten see-ems
(just three eighths of an inch),
that's really too deep,
can do a thing, so just sleep,
can't go to work, never a cinch,
o what can we do
o we haven't a clue,
sit here and look at the news
drama queens airing their views,

*****************************!!
Get real, do a deal
get out and look at the sky,
don't pi** my back and tell me it's snowing,
don't give a sh**, and just keep going.

"It comes after three people died in sub-zero, icy conditions in the north of England this week, including champion cheese maker Mandy Reed and a 10-year-old boy Joshua Houlgate who collapsed in the snow."

They didn't die because of the snow or cold, she committed suicide because her husband died, and the kid died because he had an epileptic fit. These deaths just happened to occur when it was snowing. Its downright disgraceful and disrespectful to the families of these people, just so you can hype up the winter weather. It makes my stomach turn.

I am disgusted they cited the tragic death of that young boy within the context of a weather drama. How must his familiy feel? It puts all this whining about a bit of winter weather in perspective.

In another news article I read the 'experts' predicted 2000 a week would die as a result of our 'severe' winter. That is not a comment on our weather, it is a comment on the miserable 'I'm alright jack' society we have created and we all bear some of the responsibility for that.

Ohdear oh dear a flurry in London.
The place will grind to a halt no one will get home and shelters will have to be opened so people are safe until the horrible flurry clears.
What sort of weather reporting is this ?
When it is 18" deep then start.
