Argentina tonight accused the UK of deploying nuclear weapons near the Falklands.

Foreign minister Hector Timerman made the claim as he urged the United Nations to intervene in the long-running dispute over the islands.

He said Buenos Aires had intelligence that a Vanguard submarine had been deployed in the area.

"Thus far the UK refuses to say whether it is true or not," Mr Timerman told a press conference in New York through a translator. "Are there nuclear weapons or are there not?

"The information Argentina has is that there are these nuclear weapons."

Mr Timerman accused Britain of using an "unjustified defence of self-determination" to maintain a military base on the Falklands, which allowed her to dominate the Atlantic.

"It is perhaps the last refuge of a declining empire," he insisted. "It is perhaps the last ocean that is controlled by the UK."

He said Britain had been "colonialist throughout (her) history", and should now "give peace a chance".

At a separate press conference immediately afterwards, Britain's ambassador to the UN, Sir Mark Lyall Grant said the Government did "not comment on the disposition of nuclear weapons, submarines etc".

But he branded the idea that the UK was "militarising" the situation "manifestly absurd".

"Before 1982 there was a minimal defence presence in the Falkland Islands," he said.

"It is only because Argentina illegally invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982 that since then we had to increase our defence posture.

"Nothing has changed in that defence posture in recent months or recent years."

Sir Mark said the UK had been in the Falklands since before Argentina existed, and the islanders were entitled to self-determination under the UN charter.

Tensions between the two nations have been growing over recent months, with David Cameron and Argentine president Cristina Kirchner trading barbs.

The UK has insisted that the deployment of one of its most modern destroyers, HMS Dauntless, to the region is merely routine.

The Duke of Cambridge's arrival in the Falklands for a posting as as an RAF search and rescue pilot has further infuriated Buenos Aires.

And there were protests after the website of local Falklands newspaper the Penguin News ran a photo of Mrs Kirchner labelled "bitch", in an apparent accidental slip.

Earlier, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement expressing "concern about the increasingly strong exchanges" between the two governments.

After holding talks with Mr Timerman, he said the international body would be happy to help mediate the dispute if asked.

So what - if we want to deploy Russell Brand and Katie Price off the coast of the Falklands that is our perogative - now if we were to deploy them off the coast of Argentina they may have a valid concern but until then go sort out your children with their massive paco problems and stop using the Falklands as an excuse AGAIN to detract from the mess Argentina is currently in!

It was Argentina who militarised the area when they invaded 30 years ago.
They were defeated then and will be again if they are daft enough to try a second time.

lets just hope helicopters can take down jets i just realise we only have an aicraft carrier that takes them if it kicks off.i thaught we had none but we do have 1 useless realy
19:40 on 11/02/2012
Why would we need an Aircraft Carrier? We have a fully operational airbase on the Falklands equipped with some of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.
20:15 on 11/02/2012
correct cmac, Eurofighter Typhoon, the most modern aircraft in the whole of South America, and she did not moan about them when they replaced the Tornados at Mount Pleasent 3 years ago.
17:19 on 12/02/2012
We have a full squadron of Eurofighter typhoon, more than enough fire power on board to destroy any air threat from Argentina's old aircraft. They lost 60 Mirage III fighters. I believe they tried ordering Fighting Falcons and/or IAI Kfirs but this was stopped for political reasons. They bought instead 36 Fightinghawks upgraded verisons of old Skyhawks, these are about 30 years behind the Eurofighter and the pilots are nowhere near as well trained, organised or competent as the Royal Airforce or the Fleet air Arm. As proved last time UK 60 - 0 Argentina!

"YOU'RE so dumb Otherwise you would being saying: part of me was called a so dumb or God has a so dumb." - This makes no sense at all. How old are you? No wonder you failed in all your comments about the military. I think you failed the entry interview for one of the Armed forces too. Probably through a lack of maturity. You didnt say SSN or SSBN either it was so totally wrong. I bet this is the first time youve been told what they mean too! How can I be Hispanic or Agentinian if I spent 22 years in subs??? By the way thats the correct spelling of Argentinian you halfwit! Bet you play world of warcraft too eh!!????
14:26 on 11/02/2012
We have 4 vanguard boats, only one of which is at sea at any stage, sorry but theres more going on in the world (Iran,Middle East) thats more of a priority, so sorry Argentina you are way down on the list of things to do, there is not a Vanguard boat in your area.
17:19 on 12/02/2012
There is one on it's way!
08:47 on 13/02/2012
The 80% was a correction on your poorly informed fleet estimate not your incorrect figure of the warhead capability of each Trident D2 missile. Your brother in law is an MP. Well the Navy doesnt have MP's only naval provost. So that takes you even further away from a reliable source. I have just left after 22 years in the submarine service. But thanks for being an armchair warrior! Very brave of you!!

One day, just one day the UK will start a conflict where they will get their arses kicked serverely. hopefully it will come sooner rather than later. the Uk is on the brink of a recession, there are cut back everywhere, no money for the health service, no money for elderly care, the retirement age has been extended to save money, no money for school improvements, no money for the repair of the road systems, the rail systems are crap, but we can fire warheads costing thousands of pounds and send ships here there and everywhere.. someone has lost the plot and its not the Argentines !!
14:23 on 11/02/2012
Er were not the ones whining about the Falklands, its the Argentinians, come on keep up!
14:28 on 11/02/2012
What an assinine post Peter. Because we have economic difficulties we deserve to have our ''arses kicked'' due to our willingness to defend our territory and citizens from overt, naked aggression. From a nation that has no legal claim whatsoever to the land and has a truly appaling human rights track record. If you believe the cost of sending a submarine [which routinely patrols the area irrespective] and destroyer to the islands vicinity would somehow solve the myriad of problems you listed then I am afraid you may be having difficulty finding the ''plot'' yourself.

The U.K. has got money for the health servie and care of the elderly. It performs both tasks admirably. What you mean to say is there is not enough money to provide for all perfectly. Though I appreciate hyperbole and hysteria have replaced rational thought for most nowadays.
14:32 on 11/02/2012
Dont worry, for peter thats a good post, he normaly calls for the sinking of our ships and the subsequent death of our service personnel.

As there appears to be some confusion this may be of interest to some,

Argentina's claim to the Falklands is slightly less credible than their current capability of exercising that claim via force. The Falklands were under Sovereign British rule though largely unihabited. They were used by whalers mostly as a provision stop off. In the late eighteen twenties to thirties the newly created/liberated Argentian asked permission to build a settlemt on the Falklands. Note a settlemtn only there was no question of exchaning sovreignity. Britain agreed and the settlement was built...

Almost immediately Aregentian claimed sovreignity [illegally] and began imposing exclusive whaling, fishing and sealing rights on the surrounding area. An illegal position not recognised by any other nation. They began impounding ships and America who was justly outraged sent a ship to the islands to destroy the rogue settlement. At this point the British reaffirmed their sovreignity [which they had never relinquished] by sending military forces.

A little dry I know but it's intersting to observe that Argentian's claim is based on an illegal ocupation and, essentially, invasion. It's good to know that they haven'tforsaken such barbaric tactics. Their claim is, in essence, it's nearer to Argentian than Britain and we want it. Perhpas this line of moral reasoning is influenced by the stream of ex Nazis that escaped to Argentian and became embedded in their society as they themeselves used such richly moral justification for launching invasion after invasion.
13:55 on 11/02/2012
You may have a point - Argentina certainly was/is a favourite shelter country for escaped Nazis - maybe they think the Falklands are a bit like Poland....
14:22 on 11/02/2012
Correct the brainy Nazis went to the USA, the unfortunate ones went to Russia, the quiet ones came to the UK and the pyscho mudering ones all went to Argentina! (possibly a little bit "generalised" but basicaly true)

Be careful, your post consists of truthfull and historicaly accurate facts and assesment, therefore on here, with some posters, you will be accused of being a witch and your burning at the stake will be called for. Well said but be careful as some people prefer limited historical rants, with no knowledge of the situation. Good post.

If so, that is not acceptable.
13:32 on 11/02/2012
Presumably it is then also unacceptable for the US, Russia and China to deploy nuclear weapon armed submarines and surface ships in the southern ocean, and yet they do, and Argentina makes no fuss at all.....

The right to defend is laid out quite clearly in Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations. All things security, collective security, and the defence of ones national interests or protectorates are included in the articles of Chapter VII. The Falklands are a protectorate so we have the right to defend those Islands. However, if in the future the Islanders decide they would prefer to be with Argentina, that is for the people of the Falklands to decide, but until then.

Don't tell me that there are mothers parading in the square of Buenos Aires again and food queues all over the country ... I won't believe it.
Is it the Argentine economy which (like ours) is so desperate for the lift oil would give it that they are prepared to make war over it?
The UK government has said (convincingly?) that the Falklands can become Las Malvinas if the population wish it to be so. But why would they when they are being threatened by the yobs next door?

If the british had the Falklands before Argentina was about as press claim. Then tough get lost
11:37 on 11/02/2012
Hell, I say lets kick their butts again !!. Infact if they try to attack UK soverign teritory again, The UK should take out their entire navy and airforce. We should reduce their attack capability to that of Botswana !.
11:34 on 11/02/2012
Has the argentina Pm got MAD COW disease?
ThinkCreeps
Seriously, it's time.
12:46 on 11/02/2012
Britain had a nasty case of that in 1982. Is the argentinian economy in such poor shape that a small war might fix it?
11:29 on 11/02/2012
If we have nuclear weapons deployed to the Falklands its a disgrace. They should be much closer to Argentina than that.
