Madonna was not impressed with rapper M.I.A. flipping her middle finger during her Super Bowl set last weekend, branding the move childish and "irrelevant".

The Material Girl's half-time spectacular, which was watched by 111.3 million people in the U.S., was marred by M.I.A.'s obscene gesture, prompting officials from both TV network NBC and the National Football League to issue statements apologising to viewers.

Now Madonna has addressed the controversy, confessing she was unaware of the British rapper's stunt and only found out about it as she was leaving the stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In a radio interview with DJ Ryan Seacrest on Friday, she said, "I was really surprised, I didn't know anything about it.

"I wasn't happy about it because for me... I mean, I understand it's kind of punk rock and everything, but to me, there was such a feeling of love and energy and positivity and it just seemed negative. I don't know, it's one of those things, it's such a teenager... irrelevant thing to do in one respect, but on the other hand, there was such a feeling of love and unity there, what was the point? It was just out of place."

In a separate chat with DJ Carson Daly on Friday, Madonna revealed M.I.A. had since apologised for her bad behaviour.

The pop superstar had had to to fight back tears as she performed her pop classic Like a Prayer during her Super Bowl performance, after becoming "overwhelmed" by the "love" and "support" she received from sports fans at the Indianapolis, Indiana stadium.

The Queen of Pop staged a star-studded 12-minute spectacular during half-time, with special guest appearances by Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., LMFAO and Cee Lo Green, but Madonna admits her emotions almost got the best of her as she was joined by the Forget You hitmaker and an 80-strong choir for a rendition of Like A Prayer.

During her interview with Seacrest, she said, "I was overwhelmed. It was actually very emotional for me, I almost started crying.

"I felt an incredible sense of, I know it sounds cheesy, but like, warmth, love, support... Everyone's turning on their flashlights, holding up their phones, whatever... To see an entire stadium lit up like candles... it was like a religious experience, it was crazy."

And Madonna admits she was reluctant to leave the stage once her show was over to make way for the New York Giants and New England Patriots to resume their championship game.

She added, "And then of course, it was the end of the show and I didn't want it to end. Why did the Giants and the Patriots have to come back on and play, why? I let them open up for me!"

But Madonna is relieved the big gig is over because the preparation almost sent the singer and her manager Guy Oseary over the edge.

She said, "I have to say, preparing for the Super Bowl is one of the hardest things I've ever done. It was full of surprises and we had many, many challenges along the way and my manager, Guy, was here and he and I almost killed each other over it! It was like getting through a war and surviving and actually doing really well, winning the war!"

Madonna needs to look at her past before she starts criticizing others. That halftime show was full of Masonic symbolism.

100+ million viewers watching grown men banging each others heads and chasing after a piece of animal skin filled with air inside. These men get paid ridiculous amounts of money while the scientist looking to find a cure for cancer is lucky to get 80k.

Bread and circuses for the masses.......

In the words of Arts writer Ellen Jones " Madge now appears more lazy coat-tail rider than the radical pop-pioneer she once was. " Waht more to add to that ?

the half time show was awesome. Even better was that the Giants won.

she's gone out of her way to make her life better and more positive. She's aware of how she used to be, but she got over it. You should to.

So Moaning Madge has morphed into a predictable old stuffy Tory Matron ! Hilarious.

Who ?

The outrage when Janet Jackson showed her boob and now MIA shows her finger maybe Superbowl shows should be preformed while wearing burkhas and gloves just in case.

Irrespective of whether Madonna is being hypocritical, 'jealous' or publicity seeking, it was a dumb and inappropriate gesture which successfully advertised the mindless crudity of rap 'cultcha'.
10:47 on 11/02/2012
Publicity or not, it is disgraceful to insult your host when you are their guest.
15:21 on 11/02/2012
You want to know what the real insult was ? It was to insult football fans who had to endure a football match being interupted for the dreay old vaudville act served by Moaning Madge !

I'm sure all the service men and women on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere really appreciate that Madonna's prep for the 12 minute show was like " getting through a war and survivng it" Maybe she'd like to swap places for 12 minutes with any of them.
15:53 on 12/02/2012
You do realize that this is the same place (stadiums) where they call the players 'heroes', etc. for throwing/running/catching a ball, right?
10:31 on 11/02/2012
Please someone tell the old slaper that in her day she has done the same, when she tell the people you got to save to see her show and she wants 300 a ticket greed that all it is Greed.

Oh boy, another non-post. I've offended the American paymasters. How sad and dull, this site is really becomimg a bore.

Pathetic, she was upstaged by a younger woman whose act is probably not as lewd as many of Madonna's performances. Why would the good old US of A (moms apple pie and all that) want either of them on stage at a national event. Yuck!!
