Prince Harry

Prince Harry today chatted to armed forces comrades about the "nightmares" of remembering how to use all his kit when on tour in Afghanistan.

The 27-year-old Captain with the Army Air Corps also spoke to servicemen and women about the fast food joints in Camp Bastion.

Dressed in comfortable combat fatigues he shared stories with the troops based at RAF Honington in Suffolk.

Corporal Robert Owen talked to the prince about communications equipment the royal used on his 10-week tour in the country as a forward air controller in 2007-08.

Harry was familiar with the Bowman Radio System from when he directed jets dropping bombs on Taliban positions in Helmand province.

Cpl Owen, 29, from Shropshire said: "He was saying, because there's a lot of kit nowadays, you've got to remember so much.

"He said it was bringing back nightmares about all the stuff you have got to remember."

Harry, who was appointed Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington in October 2008, arrived at the snow-blanketed base wearing his sky blue Army Air Corps beret.

When he was being shown the equipment the RAF servicemen and women use in Afghanistan he looked relaxed as he remembered his time in the country.

The royal, who is known as Captain Wales in the Army, looked at military kit including a quad bike, sniper rifles, camouflage, tanks, machine guns and mortars.

Senior Aircraftman Josh Brown from 15 Squadron Air Force Regiment said: "He's just an average sort of bloke when you meet him.

"He was talking to us about his tour in Afghanistan and Camp Bastion and what the kit was like in camp."

The 22-year-old from Cambridge showed the Prince the 81mm mortars the troops use in the war-torn country.

"We were talking about the fast food you can get in Camp Bastion. You can get pizzas and burgers and KFC."

Harry this week qualified as an Apache helicopter pilot and scooped a prize for his shooting skills.

He was presented with the best co-pilot gunner award during a dinner on Wednesday night to mark the end of 18 months of rigorous training.

The Prince received his award - a polished 30mm round from an Apache cannon mounted on a stand - at the dinner held at Wattisham Air Station, a short drive from Honington, where he has been training.

Harry also spoke with Sean and Katie Thompson, and their daughter nine-month-old Jessica, during the visit to the RAF base.

I wonder what it's like to stand among true heroes and pretend your one of them?
15:54 on 11/02/2012
Prince Harry wouldn't know, he has never pretended to be a hero and has always acknowledged that he is not a 'front line' soldier.

I know he is just a jumped up "rupert" as posh young officers used to be called.
I know he was not in any real fighting for any length of time.
however that is not actually his fault. It would be STUPID to risk his capture or death.
He did his bit which is a lot more than some of the people on here did.
To those who have served in the forces in whatever capacity you have my thanks and respect.
Even if you worked in stores in Aldershot.

Prince Harry needs visit a good library and read some history about what nightmares really are. The Battle of Stalingrad for instance. These people lead such sheltered lives that they have no idea what ``nightmare`` or even `moderately hard` is. I do wish the media would do us all a favour and stop trying to sell the royals as some sort of exceptional people when they are actually extraordinary in being so less than ordinary.

'the "nightmares" of remembering how to use all his kit when on tour in Afghanistan.' Obviously his valet or batman refused to join him ... mmm where did I put my razor? One can just imagine this playboy's cluelessness when attempting to dress himself. Please don't insult the bravery of soldiers who have given their most valuable asset, their lives - plus those young men who have come back dreadfully wounded - by allowing such as this HRH to spout about his 'nightmares'! The only nightmare this man would have, would be when his special protection force might fail to protect him. Please HuffPuff - drop this and similar stories and give us the true grit of real soldiers; something the British public can applaud, admire and above all - respect.

My son in law has just come back from Afghanistan, in fact, he was injured when an IUD blew up his armoured car, and the whole family is now buzzing just because he bumped into Prince Harry today. How good is that for a family tonic?

Please get his rank/appointment correct. He is not an Honorary Air Commandant, that rank does not exist. He is, in fact, an Honorary Air Commodore.

He is in charge of all the aircraft we scrapped in the last round of cuts and all the crew who are now on the dole.
