Costa Concordia: Footage Shows Captain Schettino's Reaction As Ship Sank (VIDEO)

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 11/02/2012 19:47 Updated: 11/02/2012 20:38

Previously unseen footage of the chaos on board the Costa Concordia after it crashed into rocks, killing 17 people, has emerged.

The video was broadcast exclusively on Italy’s TG5 news and reveals Captain Francesco Schettino on the bridge of the luxury liner, speaking on the telephone and seemingly oblivious to the confusion around him.

Crew members are heard pressurising the 52-year-old to officially evacuate the vessel as they begin to don life jackets in panic.

One officer shouts “What do we do?” as Schettino calmly continues his conversation, the Independent reported.

Around three quarters of an hour before the official “abandon ship” orders are given, one official is heard to say “Passengers are getting into the life boats on their own”, to which a man believed to be Schettino replies “vabbuo”, which translates as “whatever”.

The captain refuses to give the official orders to abandon ship for a further 15 minutes, a delay which experts say cost many their lives.

Italian investigators have demanded TG5 news hands the footage over.

Schettino was commanding the ship, carrying 4,200 people, of which 15 are still missing, when it ran aground off the Tuscan coast on 13 January.

He is being investigated for suspected manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the vessel before all its passengers were evacuated.

Schettino has remained under house arrest since the incident and the ship remains partially submerged off the coast of Giglio.

The married father-of-one is also mired in a romantic controversy after he was reportedly spotted drinking and dining with a 25-year-old blonde dancer just before the shipwreck.

Domnica Cemortan has been linked to Schettino as far back as a month before the tragedy, after a picture of the pair enjoying a meal of oysters emerged in Italian gossip magazine Chi.

A fortnight ago, Cemortan reportedly told investigators she was “in love” with the 52-year-old. The 24-year-old had initially denied any romantic involvement with him, but reportedly admitted her feelings after divers found her lingerie in his cabin.

Other items of her clothing and a makeup bag were also found among his belongings, the Times said.

She told Italian newspaper La Stampa: “Yes, it’s true. I am in love with Captain Schettino.”

According to the Daily Express, Cemortan was questioned by Italian prosecutors investigating the disaster for more than five hours before she made her comments.

She reportedly told them: "I was on the bridge because I was in love with the captain. I found him charming and fascinating. I love him.

"I was on the bridge as his guest. It's not right that his image is being destroyed."

But in an interview with Oggi magazine published this week, she denied the claims.

She said: "They are all lies. I wasn't born yesterday. The information was put out to put pressure on the captain. They want to isolate him, even from his family.

"I never said to magistrates 'I love Schettino'. They say they've found my bikini in his cabin. What have they found on this bikini that connects it to me? Was my name written on it, was there my photograph, or my DNA?"

Officials plan to remove about 500,000 gallons (2,400 tons) of heavy fuel from the Costa Concordia wreckage, but that has been delayed by rough seas and bad weather.

Once the fuel is withdrawn, the massive ship will be broken into pieces and taken away – a process that could take many months, AP reported.

He shouldn't of been in charge of a rowing boat, let alone a huge Cruise Liner.

Yes indeed, the man seams to be totaly devoid of character and judgment. With his attitude of I'm alright jack he should not have even been given the command os a small cargo vessel let alone a large passanger ship, unfortunatly this attitude seams to be all too preverlant among high ranking people today. Wealthy Companies should stop giving top possitions to friends and relitives and start placeing far more deserving people with proven leadership capabilities in them. Some degree of blame lays with the owners too.

THe footage reveals nothing but a big messy situation and a moment of a captain on his cell phone, allegedly talking with his superiors. As for himself, he lacked character and judgment, it seems.

Everyone needs to drink, the important question is what was he drinking? Quote: "Schettino did however deny any suggestion that he was intoxicated, saying he did not drink, smoke or take drugs, a statement backed by his former classmate Giuseppe Ruggiero, who said he had only ever seen Schettino drink Coca Cola"
True or not this raises doubts but surely once arrested the police would have tested.
Flirting, a sin? human nature pal. Your prejudice is showing, now there's a sin!

Not the first time the Italians have upped and legged it!
However at least the coast guard seemed to be absolutely outraged at him.

the captain of the former achille lauro, when it sank off of south africa, was italian. he abandoned ship ahead of the passengers like this twit did. he even said "i gave the order to abandon ship. it is not my fault that no one followed those orders." i believe that there are many fine italian ship captains. just wish they would condemn these two for they are giving them a bad name.

The Italian's need to take a lesson from Captain Chesley Sullenberger who successfully ditched US Airways flight 1549 into the Hudson River saving the lives of all 155 people.

It appears that Captain Schettino did not have the "right stuff". The commanders of all large vessels should be military trained and tested for their ability to act decisively in time of crisis. It seems he was not up to the job.

And from the pilots who crashed because of human error?
Carnival lines has to, at all costs, hang the blame elsewhere. A lot of money is at stake. It's likely true that the Captain did not have the right stuff. (Great book, BTW)
Who hired him, gave him orders, spoke with him by cell phone after the crash? Ultimately, the responsibility for that night falls on him, of course. Even if the company wanted to avoid an evacuation if possible, the Captain should have had the character and judgment to act swiftly.
A pasticaccio ( big mess) often has many strands attached.

Most merchant navy captains get on fine without military training.

Clearly the captain has a lot of questions to answer. However I do find it somewhat suspicious that the owners were VERY fast to blame him/wash their hands in public. I do wonder if they did indeed "recommend" the sail by salute????

Why would the company do that? Carnival owns Cunard and Holland America, cruise lines I've been on many times, and we never passed so closely to any coastline. His attitude speaks volumes.

We returned last week from a Carnival Cruise to Hawaii. We have cruised before and those muster drills were always filled with laughter, drinks and inattention. This time was very different. You could hear a pin drop during the drill. People were really paying attention, which is a good thing.

What an absolute jerk!! I hope they hang him.
04:55 PM on 02/12/2012
The captain might have been too busy setting up a romantic dinner to evacuate his passengers. This guy clearly needs to hang for murder, his actions were almost a fu to the cruise line and the passengers.
05:33 PM on 02/12/2012
lets give him his day in court first ....and btw...what is hanging him going to prove ? it may satisfy your own personal vengeance - but it will prove nothing elses

This incompetent was responsible for the lives of thousands as captain of his ship. What he did was the equivalent of piloting a airliner and slamming it into the earth. A deliberate disregard for his duties led to a yet to be determined number of deaths. Manslaughter is a crime of accidental death however this man's actions before and after the tragedy were no accident. The charges will grow as the investigation proceeds. But why don't you ask the families of the loved ones lost to this fools hapless abilities as a captain what they would expect.

"Crew members are heard pressurising the 52-year-old to officially evacuate the vessel as they begin to don life jackets in panic".

So, did the 52-year need to have a minimum PSI before he could evacuate the ship?

Does ANYBODY actually read these things before they are published?
