Micah Richards has left twitter following racist abuse from members of the social networking site, according to reports on Saturday.

The Manchester City defender has shut down his twitter accout @officialMR2.

A source close to Richards told the Mirror: “In recent months, however, there’s been an increase in racist abuse from a small and depressing minority, and he decided enough was enough.”

Police are investigating some of the tweets sent to the 23-year-old striker, a Man City spokesperson told the BBC.

Cyprus international footballer Tom Richards called for the site to have a "proper registration process" in response to the news.

In December Stan Collymore, the former footballer turned pundit, used his Twitter account to highlight the problem of racism, amid an ongoing row about the issue in football.

Collymore, who played for Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Aston Villa, added racially abusive tweets to his favourite list on the social network.

Anyone who gets involved with Twitter is asking for trouble. It is used by people who believe that they can say what they want with no consequences. Professional sportsmen and women would be well advised to stay clear of it.

That is why I have no social networking. Email, sms, regular mailing or phone will do just fine for me without the nonsense and abusive people. Why on earth do people want their privacy being put out to the whole world. Is it really worth it? Just asking

COME ON DICK, GROW UP. IT'S ONLY WORDS. WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ?
21:12 on 09/04/2012
Words also hurt people,

HUFF you post stories which are designed to create a reaction ! THEN YOU WONT PRINT THE REACTION ? SEEM VERY BIAS & UNFAIR There are two sides to an argument you are showing favour towards one side of racism ???

so why was the Diane Abbot thing closed down, finished and dusted in one day ? when the John Tarry fiasco is dragging on for weeks ? does`nt sound very equal to me, but then it has always been one sided

I am still not able to fan anyone. AOL moderators are quick to delete posts, but cannot address problems with their own website. Is this discrimination? perhaps I should follow Micah Richards lead.

me too,I do not know if this is a tech problem or a diliberate attempt of showing their ability to control our use of their site!! which ever its a real pain in the butt!! Im just wondering how long before they stop all comunication between us users

1984 looms on the horizon like the Flying Dutchman. Considering it was a fictional science fiction novel, only 30 years out is virtually bang on. They will not stop all users of course, only the likes of thee and me, and a few other responsible moderate and sensible people. I suspect strongly that like me, you get a lot of PC replies condemning your comments (which I personally find thought provoking and therefore what this place is supposed to be about ( whether we agree or not being irrelevant) ) They will no doubt continue to be aired long after we are muzzled. Be afraid, be very afraid.

It is not a tech problem. The problem is the various moderators. Some of them are biased. Most of the post they delete don't have anything out of place and they just delete it because THEY do not like it. So much for 'free speech'

I know next to nothing about soccer, but this racist thing is out of hand. I was always brought up to believe that a man was innocent until proven guilty.John Terry has been removed as team captain and therefore been found guilty by virtue of trial by media. Had he been say a bank manager, and accused rape. He would have been bailed, and continued with his job until such time as he was found guilty in a court of law. So it seems possible racist abuse (he has not yet been found guilty in law) is worse than rape. In Micah Richards place, I would not even bother to read these comments. I have no idea what they are, I would simply laugh all the way to the bank. It is now getting too much, and too easy to cry racist. Especially when it only seems to work in one direction

thats what happens when you are not liked he needs to get his head around it

Take it like a man. names never hurt anyone unless you are weak and pathetic so just accept that in this world everyone has to bare some form of cross to carry so just get on with life and don`t give those low lives the opportuniaty of knowing what they said has got to you ok
09:20 on 12/02/2012
All very simplistic, and a black and white view of the world.

16:16 on 12/02/2012
The racism on the UK HP site is unbelieveable with the sort of racist comments being posted here. Heven helps us if this is how people think of black people in UK. You are right with the colour comment. I can't fan you for some strange reason

Don't matter colour we are we all have feelings
