Police Seize Spoof Manchester United Fanzine After KKK Luis Suarez Mask Is Printed

Thousands of copies of a Manchester United fanzine, which featured a "potentially offensive image", were seized by police before today's match against Liverpool.

The edition of Red Issue included a spoof poster of a Ku Klux Klan hood along with the words "LFC" and "Suarez is Innocent", it was reported.

Its publication follows the on-going race row involving Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who was given an eight-match ban for racially abusing United defender Patrice Evra.

Many fans took to Twitter to post images of the fanzine's spoof and voice support and outrage over the publication's move and the police's response.

The tensions were mirrored on the pitch when Suarez refused to shake hands with the United captain before the kick off.

Evra had offered his hand to Suarez but the Uruguay international bypassed the Frenchman and went straight to goalkeeper David de Gea.

Evra did not accept that and attempted to grab Suarez's arm to complete the formalities, but the striker shrugged him off.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they will take "appropriate action" against anyone found selling the offending edition of Red Issue or displaying it in public.

One arrest has already been made, the force said, in connection with the sale of T-shirts outside Old Trafford which had been "deemed offensive".

Match commander Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts said: "Shortly before kick-off we were made aware that a Manchester United supporters' fanzine being sold outside Old Trafford featured a potentially offensive image.

"Officers are now seizing the fanzines and in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service we will take appropriate action against anyone either found selling this particular fanzine or provocatively displaying the image in public.

"Officers have also been made aware of a T-shirt on sale outside the ground that is also deemed to be offensive. We are also seizing these items and anyone found wearing one will be required to remove it and hand it to police.

"At this stage we have arrested one man in relation to the T-shirts on suspicion of a racially-aggravated public order offence and we will be continuing to work with the clubs to minimise the impact of the image, which we consider to be offensive.

"I have taken this course of action as both items are potentially offensive and we cannot be in a situation where hundreds or thousands of people were displaying offensive images at a football match. The consequences of taking no action could have resulted in public order incidents inside or outside the ground."

Nobody from Red Issue was available for comment.

Football is a working class game played by working class people with working class educations being paid ultra high wages.
Lack of morality and black and white racism are the norm in this underclass.
Calling the highly paid "role models" just because they are highly paid is a foolish thing to do.
An in this case it is just pure opportunism.

As for this spoof fanzine, it is probably born out of the BS frustration of this politically correct nonsense

You are surely the most pompous person I have come across commenting on this site. Hate to tell you this but some of the worst racist I have encountered are middle/upper class. They are just more polite about it. I was brought up in a multi-cultural (hate that phrase) neighbourhood. I saw little racism. When I went to University (thanks to my 'working class' education) and I was shocked by the attitude of my middle and upper class fellow students. One actually told me that 'black people are ok as long as they don't live too near me'. He is now a highly paid Barrister. This attitude was not uncommon.

evra should grow up the little kid. john barnes use to have banannas thrown at him on the pitch and probably called all sorts. paul ince use to get called black this black that, i could go on. none of these players ever cried like little babies, they got the job done on the pitch. its all banter to try and put the player on tilt ,they will not say it off the pitch on the street as they know they will get knocked out.

No not so, you do not know the Scars in their hearts, we no longer have to laugh it off,and our children do and should not have to put up with it.
Kick it out.

DAvid,

Help me out here. Are you saying it's a good thing thing that John Barnes had bananas thrown at him?
Have a read of Paul Cannovilles autobiography to see how racism affected players back then> really don't like Evra and I think Suarez is a really good player, but who's in the wrong in this situation is as clear as daylight.

Beautiful Game --- My Arse. It used to be "Beautiful" Now its just about that "Big Chip" that lots of certain people carry on their shoulder,-- being able to show it off in public, and use it as a Political Platform for their own Perverse purposes, Wake up England, we`re being conned by that "Big Chip".

Liverpool fans, this is the kind of racist clown who agrees with you.
Might make you reconsider?
23:39 on 12/02/2012
there is a lot of truth in what you say.The racist card is played too often and is a one way street. If you believe the media no Afro-Caribeans ever racially abuse white people. The truth is very different. The government/press have a hidden agenda and that revolves around making the British people accept a multi-cultural society that the majority never wanted in the first place.

Suarez is a disgrace. This type of behaviour may by accepted in Uruguay but it should not be seen in the English football league. Suarez has shown he is not willing to change and so should go. Dalglish's comments after the match seemed to condone the behaviour of Suarez. Liverpool has a long and respected history in football as does Dalglish, but I'm starting to think there is something rotten in the heart of Liverpool FC.
00:06 on 13/02/2012
Dalglish has apologised for that, and to be fair he really didn't know about the no-handshake until afterwards. Today he has given Suarez a kicking and made him apologise too.

Not quite enough for me, I think Suarez should have apologised to Evra in person, but I don't think Dalglish can do much more than he has today.

This is just gamesmanship pure and simple. Evra and Ferdinand cause endless trouble by playing the race card to their teams advantage. Manure have never shied away from cheating so this latest ploy from Ferguson's playbook should surprise no one. Swearing at a player in the heat of a match is not racism even if a color is mentioned. It's just abuse and nothing else. making more of it than that causes even more trouble. These people should stop cheating and grow up.
07:16 on 12/02/2012
'It is just abuse....' that is fine then. I know, perhaps paedophilia is not so bad after all, just children being cry babies. People wonder why there are anti-discrimination laws.
11:59 on 12/02/2012
i agree, its all about trying to put the other player/team on tilt by winding them up. john barnes use to get banannas thrown at him for christ sakes, never once did he cry about any of it infact it probably made him play even better.
11:03 on 13/02/2012
Yes, of course it did. I can remember once after another particularly poor show for England, Barnes stated to Motty " No encouragement from the crowd, they never threw fruit, just insults " You gormless twit

Okay, so as I understand it, Suarez, on his encounter with Evra which started this whole debacle, used the word "negro" towards him, or the South American term for it! Now off course, the word "negro" is NOT offensive! Which is why I assume Dalglish & LFC were defending him in the manner in which they did..BUT, if this IS true, why on Earth did Suarez feel the need to make reference to Evra's race when they squared up to each other in the first place? There was no need unless you were gonna use it in a derogitary sense. And just because Suarez didn't use the other 'N' word doesn't really defend it in this context!

So I think Dalglish was out of order then, & out of order today, as well as Suarez off course, for not shaking his hand & making this the start of the end of it all!

This image on the fanzine was not a good idea, nor was Evra's celebration at the end of the game, but you can forgive him given what he had just been through, as Fergie said.

I watched the unsportsman-like conduct. Race and racism have become a permanent fixture in European soccer. FIFA and EAFA must step up to the plate to stamp it out.
01:57 on 12/02/2012
Suarez's behaviour was just abhorrent, as was Dagleish for justifying this disgraceful display. This, along with the Gerrard Houllier / Emile Heskey era of diving and hand balling are the two lowest points of a great club whose legacy I will continue to admire.

I had the distinct impression that as both Liverpool and Suarez decided against appealing the eight game ban; the incident concerning Vidic could have been done and dusted with a handshake today.
If Dalgleish has any credibility as a manager he needs to be seen to take action against Suarez.
I support neither Liverpool or Man Utd but can see how this situation is going to inflame fans and cause more people harm in th elong run. The pampered footballers will continue to live in their secure gated estates and put at least on finger up to their 'Fans' at every opportunity.
00:37 on 12/02/2012
Sorry it was not Vidic... it was Patrice Evra .but i agree Liverpool need to sort out their players as Suarez will bring the game into disrepute. he is showing his ignorance............ i have a great respect for Dalgleish he is a great manager but he has to bring his players under control......... before we know it we will be back to football hooligans........ we need to go forward not back.

Can you imagine if it had been Vidic? We'd be looking for bits of Suarez all over OT. Mr Vidic does not seem to me to be the kind of man who reports insults, I suspect he has a more 'Cantonaesque' approach to things like this.

Yeah- apologies for getting players names mixed up. I must have had a mental block- as said below Vidic would have minced Suarez!

Nah. They just shoot folks they don't like.

i have heard about violence at soccer games, with the brits being the worst offenders. Again, racially offensive speech is protected in the United States. I have never heard of the police confiscating t shirts or magazines. G

I am a great admirer of Liverpool F.C but Saurez - He did not learn from his 8 match ban - maybe he should be banned again but for 16 games so that he might learn how to behave. Even K.D hadn't an answer other than to blame the media.
21:02 on 11/02/2012
it was totally uncalled for today what saurez did and i think kenny dalgliesh is as bad for letting him get away with it was wrong with managers today they afraid to do anything and i would be ashamed to call my self a fan
01:38 on 12/02/2012
I agree K.Dalglish was stuck for words in the after match interview, how many yellow cards were issued during the game ? what kind of answer was that. Saurez must think everybody is on his side when it is only K.D and his team mates. I say put him on a one way ticket back to Uruguay until he learns the code of conduct of football or any other sport
05:01 on 12/02/2012
is what Suarez did any worse than Evra`s conduct after the game ? Man Utd started this not Liverpool. All that was needed was an apology from Suarez for a misunderstanding after the original game.People like Rio Ferdinand have made this an issue as he did with his brother and John Terry. He needs to look at himself closely,he is no A1 citizen, far from it.When you make an issue of calling someone a white ****** or a black ***** or a yellow ****** in the heat of the moment you are not addressing racism.

Yes it worse; because Suarez did it first. Evra was reacting. He's a fool, but can you blame him for being happy?
Suarez started it, not Man Utd. Who does he play for?
Rio Ferdinand is quite right to speak out about racism and doesn't have to be an A1 citizen whatever that means? Are you an A1 citizen? Am I? Are we allowed to offer an opinion? Drivel, mate!
When you bring someone's race in to an argument you are being racially offensive; if you don't want to offend people; don't do it; simple.
Basically you're completely wrong on every single point you make, which is quite an achievement.
07:39 on 12/02/2012
Accept racial insults and be a good citizen, without that you are not? I am flabbergasted!!!
