John Terry's Sacking Supported By Jeremy Hunt

John Terry Fabio Capello Jeremy Hunt

The FA was right to strip John Terry of the England captaincy, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said today as he accused Luis Suarez of "unsporting behaviour" by failing to shake Patrice Evra's hand.

Mr Hunt said the fracas between the two footballers at Old Trafford yesterday was "incredibly depressing", as he backed Prime Minister David Cameron's decision to hold a summit in Downing Street to discuss racism in football.

There had been "huge strides" in tackling the problem in recent years, he said, but recent events had shown the footballing authorities and Government could not be complacent.

And he backed the FA's decision to remove the captain's armband from John Terry.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Mr Hunt said: "It's a decision for the FA but I did support them when they made that decision because I think sometimes the principle is important than any one person.

"I think it is incredibly important for the future of the game that the FA deal decisively and clearly with these issues as they did with Suarez and I absolutely supported them.

"But John Terry is innocent until proven guilty and we must wait and see what the courts decide."

Asked for his reaction to yesterday's row between Evra and Suarez, the Culture Secretary praised the match referee Phil Dowd.

He said: "It was very unsporting behaviour and I am sure the FA will look in to see if any rules were broken.

"I thought the referee handled it brilliantly. It was an incredibly tense and difficult situation and Phil Dowd did a fantastic job. This is the kind of thing that can so easily escalate and that is why the Prime Minister has decided he is going to take a real interest and have this meeting in Downing Street."

Mr Hunt said he would like Fabio Capello's replacement as England manager to be English but he must be the "best man for the job".

I've got to get this one in here although it is not the right forum for my concerns...but am I the only one to regard england's futile debacle losing the last three tests but now taking a two nil lead in the one day games, as suspicious? If I were a betting man, I would have made a fortune out of the odds that england's results would be as has happened....if this was Pakistan playing Pakistan..wouldn't we be saying....'something stinks here.'

In the legal sense it is called 'a rebuttable presumption of innocence'- is one that may be proved otherwise on the presentation of evidence. It is not a state of absolute or irrebutable innocence, that state is reached when there is absolute proof of innocence which at the moment there isn't.

It is because of the 'rebuttable presumption' Terry has been removed and why other people can be suspended from work legally until such times as their legal state has reached either irrebutable guilt or innocence.

So innocent until proven guilty is not legally correct, it is a probability until the facts are presented.

but it is not an irrebuttable presumption of guilt. When Terry is found not guilty.. he could make a fortune from the FA by suing them for implied presumtion of guilt which could be farily adduced to have impuned his character and caused him no end of mental anguish and his family much concern for his welfare.

LOL - no he can't - unde English law you are allowed to be removed from your place or position at work pending further action. Even if he is found innocent, he has no case against them as there is evidence so far to warrant an arrest and court referral. Look at it from this scenario and see if it's wrong. Kid comes home and says teacher has been fiddling with him/her in the playground in front of 1000 other kids. That kid is yours, under your rules, that teacher can remain in place pending any investigation/court case. Happy? Think not. The reason it can be done is there is evidence to support further investigation as already viewed by the CPS therefore the removal of any claim Terry may make as the charge itself was not vexatious. Under your view no-one would be arrested as the police would get sued so often. CPS has him bang to rights, sorry :)

so why hasn't suarez been charged by the police it the FA found him guilty.
does racism only apply to white people in our courts and cps

What a fuss about name calling.More harm is done by making a big thing of this racism thing. It is best ignored in my opinion. In the 50s we unwittingly entered a coloured only bar in New Orleans and we were called white honkies. In Australia Pommie bast....s.Water off a duck's back. The very fact that people are referred to as black and white is a racist comment.Isn't it?

Well said alberthot. My thoughts entirely. We seem to have a bunch of nutcases running the FA and this country. The next England manager must be English - inverted racism? From my viewing of the England games, Capello has been a very successful manager. A bit different from the 1970's when the England team were playing for NASA.

I think the good thing to come out of this stupid mess, is the end of coppello lets hope the end of terry and rio ferdinand whom between the three of them achieved nothing at all for england so lets hope we have seen the back of the three of them,
As for the handshake the whole handshake thing is a farce just what does it achieve same amount of foul talk same awfull career threatening tackles same spitting shirt pulling, so what the point of a handshake i like to handshake people i like and respect, and to be honest there are plenty i would not offer my hand to and they most likely feel the same. All this just go"s to far why because of the ss radio and T V pundits who have nothing better to talk about. The vast majority of football fans are sick to death, of it all and really couldn"t care either way about terry ferdinand both evra suarez lets just get back to football thats what we pay for

Terry is a yob and would not have the sense to stand down until the allegation was dealt with by the Court. The great Bobby Moore must be turning in his grave to think that an England captain can behave in such away. 'God bless the great great Booby Moore'
11:45 PM on 02/12/2012
I don`t recall Bobby Moore standing down when he was accused of robbery and put in prison in Mexico.

Nothing like distorting the facts ... Bobby Moore was placed under house arrest in Bogota (Colombia) on a fabricated charge of attempting to steal a bracelet from the hotel jewellery store. The store owners were subsequently charged with conspiracy ...

Somebody should now do something about the biggoted Liverpool player who refused to shake Evras hand, the club should also be fined an extortionate amount of money.
10:30 PM on 02/12/2012

Jeremy hunt, contradictory TW*T. He agrees that the "No interest in football" moronic FA were right to remove the captains armband from John Terry and in the next paragraph comes out with "But John Terry is innocent until proven guilty and we must wait and see what the courts decide." Coalition Pr*ck......

It is standard practice in Britain that an employee is suspended on full pay until an charge of racism or sexism is resolved. That does not alter the fact that the employee is innocent until the case is dealt with. Would it be acceptable if a manager with a charge of racism or sexism is allowed to continue managing his/her staff which may include the alleged victim or his/her brother?
Why should millionaire footballers be treated differently?
We have made mistakes, like all other countries, in the past centuries by using publicity to encourage racism in order to brainwash the normal fair-minded British people into accepting slavery as a devine Christian right.
It is right that Britain is now leading the rest of Europe, or probably the world, is rejecting racism and sexism and proposing that an individual should be judged by his or her character and not the accident of race or gender.
08:52 PM on 02/22/2012
So if you don't like your boss, make a false charge of racism or sexism.... Just because it's standard practice doesn't mean it's right. If you got accused of being a Paedophile and were subsequenly removed from your position, you would be happy with that I take it.

if terry was a man he would have quit also by backing the man who made him captain
08:01 PM on 02/12/2012
CVanerons got his priorites reight then. Stuff the country, lets hold a summit on football!!!!

Sorry - typo. Should read 'Cameron's got his priorities right then'..

How come John Terry is "innocent until proven guilty " and Suarez is sentenced and found guilty by a kangaroo court at the f.a. ?
08:58 PM on 02/12/2012
Suarez admitted he used the word but that he did not intended it the way it was interpreted as it was normal to use the word in his country in public.
Terry denies that he used the word. Also, because a member of the public complained to the Police aqbout Terry, the Police took action in his case. The FA has already investgated but in order not to prejudice the Police case, has postponed or delayed issuing their decision until after the Police case is heard in Court.
You obviously have not been following these cases very well.

i feel sorry for fabio he was placed in an untenable position, whoever heard of an italian leaving a sinking ship?
07:54 PM on 02/12/2012
don`t feel sorry for him-he`s laughing all the way to the bank.He is not bothered in the slightest about resigning from the England job

Luck man, got away with all that millions and won't even get the blame for Euro2012.
07:07 PM on 02/12/2012
So, it is right that Terry should be treated as guilty before proven guilty? I thought that everyone was innocent until proven guilty. I know nothing about football, but reading this article, I understand why I don't want to know.
08:47 PM on 02/12/2012
Agree.....
09:05 PM on 02/12/2012
It doesn't matter if you know nothing about football. However, you should know that any employee who is charged with racism or sexism in the workplace is suspended with full pay until the case is resolved, although is innocent until proven guilty. Millionaire footballers should not be given preferential treatment.
11:41 AM on 02/13/2012
so why doesn't the same apply to disability discrimination at work
09:50 PM on 02/13/2012
So we might as well suspend every teacher, every copper, every traffic warden, every planning officer, every health and safety inspector, how long a list do you want? It is rubbish to suggest that, as a matter of course, everyone facing some unfounded allegation is suspended on full pay. Every rougue in the country would be making such allegatrions and HMRC would never get off the ground again. Terry was not acting in his capacity as England Captain. Stripping him of the captaincy is a degrading and humiliating act, in breach of his human rights. If you suspend someone from work on the basis of an unfouded accusation, then you should also suspend the accuser until the matter is resolved, given that most such accusations are finally found to be malicious.
