Bolton Court

A woman has admitted trying to hide her dead baby in a garden.

Fatima Ali, 26, of Alfred Street, Bury, appeared at Bolton Crown Court charged with cruelty to a person under 16 and endeavouring to conceal the birth of a child.

The charges relate to the discovery of a baby girl's body wrapped in a shawl outside a house in Tinline Street, Bury, on Monday September 6 2010.

Ali, wearing glasses, a black and white shawl and a black overcoat, pleaded guilty to both offences.

The court heard that the first offence of cruelty related to the defendant not seeking "prompt medical attention" when the baby was born.

The court heard there was no evidence of assault or ill- treatment on the baby, named in court as Malaikah Dua Hussain.

Lisa Roberts, defending, said: "Within two hours or so the child had died. There were no signs of injury. The defendant accepts that in failing to seek medical attention for the child that the child subsequently died."

Miss Roberts said there was "a story to tell" and a background to what happened which would be told when Ali is sentenced.

Judge Maureen Roddy said: "This matter is adjourned for sentence on April 13 for the purposes of a psychiatric report to give some insight as to why you behaved as you did to your newborn infant.

"You must understand these are extremely serious offences and the court will have many options, including custody."

When the baby's body was found police named her Aliyah, meaning beautiful in Arabic, while they undertook an investigation to find her mother.

She was wrapped in a black and pink zebra print scarf when she was discovered by a member of the public.

She had been carefully placed over the wall of the front garden.

Paramedics were called but the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination could not determine the cause of her death.

The baby girl died with 2 hours of being born and there were no signs of assult or ill-treatment. She died because medical attention wasn't called for; why? We will find out in time but who knows what was going on in the mothers head.

How about 'Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone'...So many voices here, too quick to judge. Wait for the facts first!

It's an isolated individual case, the debate on law or ethnicity doesn't need to be addressed. They say the story will be told when she is sentenced, so wait for opinion till then...

well said, chindit623. It's easy to judge someone from a cosy distance. But being in that position must be hell.

Let us ignore the nationality of the woman. What matters is that the child died within 2 hours of birth. The mother has just gone through pregnancy, labour and birth. The much loved child dies within 2 hours of being born. What is going through the mind of the mother? Only a mother who has endured that, herself, can understand. Only she can sympathise with the mother. Can anyone who has posted on here say they would act in a rational manner? Unless we are made to face a similar situation, none of us knows how we would react. We might say now that we would take a given line of action. However, if we were faced with that situation, the chances are, we would take a wholly different line!

Well said Chindit, unlike some you don't switch your humanity off just because this woman has a a muslim name.

why not be in hospital having the baby? why not have a doctor / midwife there if it was a home birth ? if the baby was early, why not ring for an ambulance as soon as the baby was born ?? it is not like she was a child.

Well, locals say is that she had it out of wedlock with a non-Muslim so to hide it from her family she did this. Not entirely sure.

Well said jmt432p. The law applies to all and as said elsewhere, we should not have to change our laws to suit minorities. If the woman has mental health problems then she should be treated accordingly, otherwise she must pay the price for breaking the law.

Well jmt432p, all I can say is WTF did this huffing crowd come out of? I never saw anyone who is against free speech as much as them. I have come to the conclusion that they belong or are owned by the government; why? Well because you don't need to use swear words just mention government, and they are out with the rubber. I think the name suits them, as they huff with me all the time and I think it's time we the public teach these people a lesson. They think that we the people, who make comments on here, should not use certain words, which I have asked the huffers to prove to me that they are swear/insulting words, but as yet they never contacted me personally, or through their comments page. I think we have who have the majority, should have a very much bigger say than the handful that run this comment page. So perhaps it's time to either put them out of business or less let us have more say through free speech on their comment page.

What are the chances of this comment not making it on to their comment page???
