John Prescott has recently announced his intention to stand for Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside.

The former Deputy Prime Minister told the Hull Daily Mail that he wanted to be Labour's candidate for Police Commissioner. He said:

"I feel that after proudly serving as a local MP for 40 years and as a cabinet minister for 10 years, I have the experience to listen to the public and help be their strong voice in supporting the police and holding them to account."

Elected police commissioners are part of the coalition's planned changes to the police force. Home Secretary Theresa May has said that democratically elected police commissioners would improve accountability and transparency.

Lord Prescott has joked about his decision that "My wife thought I'd just retire, but I'm not a slippers man".

In the spirit of Prescott's next step, we have put together a list of some of our favourite politicians and what they did after their time in Parliament.
