My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding Review: Series 2 Brings More Shocks, Sequins And Spray Tans

Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

"Bigger, Fatter, Gypsier" is what Channel 4 promised for the second series of its observational documentary sensation Big Fat Gypsy Weddings. The controversial tagline gave a glimpse of what was to come, and after the first episode it's clear to see the programme remains just as outrageous as the Traveller brides' tans and garish outfits featured in the last series of the show.

The fly-on-the-wall hit, which claims to have "unprecedented access to the world's most secretive community", became the channel's eighth highest-rated programme ever during its first series early last year, racking up a total of 8.7m consolidated viewers. More people watched the finale than watched the Brit Awards on ITV1.

Although Gypsy Weddings gives what the channel claims is an "authentic look into the Traveller community", after watching the first episode there's a sense of uneasiness about what's being filmed.

The episode attempted to find out what's behind the travellers' distinctive and outlandish looks and apparent preoccupation with appearance. It showed 9-year-old Nangel preparing for her first Holy Communion by getting fake nails and a fake tan applied. When asked why she was going to such effort, she said: "God wants you to look good."

The young girls spent so long perfecting their outfits that they missed the beginning of their service, eventually arriving as miniature versions of the older Gypsy brides in their families who became famous last series for their humongous white dresses, and bickering over who looked best.

Little was explained about where the tradition of such a loud look for special occasions came from and when it became such an apparently important focus, with one young girl simply spouting the old adage "beauty is pain". Another Traveller, as she was filmed lying on a sun bed - minus protective eye wear - claimed: "At the end of the day, if I get cancer I get cancer."

The shock factor is what Gypsy Weddings is all about. That's why 21-year-old Dolores, who had been traveling through Spain for the past six months and was returning home to Ireland for the wedding season, got so much attention from the cameras for her 'unusual' palm tree dress. Her friend Chantelle stated matter-of-factly: "I'm a pineapple and she's a palm tree... like a Spanish senorita." And of course, Liverpudlian Dressmaker Thelma Madine, who featured in the first series, was drafted in to create the monstrosities.

The second series is bound to entertain, but it's also likely to upset. Christine Cawley, an Irish Traveller living in London, has already lambasted the series for "presenting an untrue or untypical image" of the Traveller community.

Writing on the Guardian she added: "Some of these posters (for the second series) blatantly exploit young girls who are specially dressed up for an event. The message is: 'This is what they are like all the time, look how brash and provocative they are.' To use children like this just to get viewers is shocking."

Perhaps the most enlightening moment of the show, and an indication of how the show's stars should be reacted to - instead of ridiculed - was provided by the vicar. Asked how he felt about the young girls who arrived late for their first Holy Communion in outfits that even Christina Aguilera might think trashy, he said: "That's them and that's how they express themselves... Like it or not, that's special."

The whole series has turned into a parody of itself; it tells us nothing of any value about Irish Tinkers other than their apparent ability to spend humongous amounts of money of which no indication is given where it comes from! Mens faces blanked out, why? what are they hiding? My direct personal experience with such people; Irish accents, very aggressive attitude to all around them, large caravans, new white vans, expensive 4x4's, blatant liars, thieving, abuse when declining approaches about cutting my hedges, trees, and tarmacking my property.Items went missing from homes and gardens. The local pub became a war zone inside and out, and closed after three days for the remainder of the month as the landlord and staff were subjected to abuse and foul language. Shoplifting escalated beyond all bounds in the village shop for three weeks, stolen goods found on site, 7 burnt out caravans (all later established as stolen) within a 3 mile radius....the church lost all its lead for the first time in living history, but I suppose it was the local pensioners framing the poo, badly treated, misunderstood "community". Perlease......do not tell me to treat these people with respect or understand their culture. They have no concept of respect for my culture or myself. This fatuous stupid programme does not explain anything of value about "Gypsies" which they are not anyway. No honesty or integrity is displayed about their culture or background.

I thought the show was fragmented and did everyone miss the comment of the Grandma who in a despairing voice said it wasnt like that in her day. How often grandparents say that from every other community? Also tellingly, the farcical beauty pageant was won by the most demure girl in it. She was ,as all the other young women were, very beautiful Subtitles would have been useful as many of the girls spoke so quickly it was hard to get what they were saying. I look forward to the next episode.

I don't see the harm in these girls and young women dressing up. if this is their culture, let them enjoy it. I live connecticut, very far away from travelers but i enjoy watching this show. Reminds me a lot of Jersey and Staten Island culture were this kind of over the top style and glamor is common.

Did I see the "famous" (ha ah) Cher Lloyd on the Gypsy programme the other day.

The more telling question should be - where does the money come from to fund these garish events. Flash cars, dresses worth thousands and no visible means of paying for them, MMMMmmmmm I wonder.

Its amazing how much money you can have when you pay no TAX !!

and steal, amongst other things, signal cables from the railway, lead off church roofs, construction machinery, transit vans. Not least bullying people into having drives tarmaced and other unneccessary work done at 20 times the going rate. Oh and I forgot not paying council tax, NHI, motor insurance and road tax etc.

Cheap tacky telly for saddos and voyeurs.

It does make very good TV. I bet there aren't many 40% tax payers amongst them. Its amazing how they can afford such spectacular events, Are they all lottery winners? or are the husbands investment bankers? (Maybe that's why the men hide their faces !).
The Government should be congratulated for the support they give, enabling these young couples to embrace in Holy Matrimony, breed and ensure a new generation of copper stripping, tarmac laying, horse traders.

Why is no one investigating where all the money comes from to fund these weddings?

This series should be renamed "Big Fat Irish Tinker Weddings" Romany and Irish Gypsys are worlds apart. In my personal and professional life I have experienced both. I am a Financial Consultant and have always found Romany Travellers to be trustworthy and honest. I have several Romany clients that have settled and bought properties. One of my friends is a really lovely woman that just happens to be a romany traveller. Her mobile home and the grounds it is on are immaculate (not a washing machine or other scrap metal in sight on the outside!) Her children are a credit to her and her husband. They treat each other with respect and as equals. I am from an Irish (not gypsy) background. My experience of Irish Travellers is vastly different. My concern is that all will be judged the same. I am sure that most Irish Travellers do not behave in this way. The filming has been edited to show them in a very poor light.

Why are the faces of the men in this program obscured/shaded? Could it be they don't wish to be recognised for tax or criminal reasons or is it simply that the girls are just such an enormous embarassment?

Because they are all " on the rob "

it would be more interesting if the show would investigate how they manage to fund their lifestyles. Dont think its just tarmacing driveways!!!!
