Poetry Teacher Takes On Pupil In Rap Battle (VIDEO)

WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS BAD LANGUAGE

The crowd parts and out from the sea of caps, chains and hoodies emerges a nicely dressed man in a suit and a tie. He’s probably a dad, here to collect the baby-faced MC Blizzard who stands opposite him.

But as he opens his mouth and the words flow, we realise he’s actually here to battle.

The video above shows poetry teacher Mark Grist taking on his 17-year-old pupil MC Blizzard in a freestyle rap battle. Unsurprisingly, it's become a viral hit.

Once you get past the faux aggression and expletives, Grist's powers of wit and improvisation really shine through as the elder man's more 'bookish' crudity spars with his young opponents rap-style put downs.

He's so good you begin to suspect this is not Grist's first exposure to hip hop.

In fact it isn't - Grist is one half of Dead Poets, a Peterborough based group who fuse hip hop with poetry. He and collaborator MC Mixy have toured the UK, played at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and done much outreach work with schools.

But who wins, master or apprentice? You'll have to watch the video to find out...

To see more from him, follow Grist on Twitter or view the Dead Poets website.

You've got to give it awhile. The kid thinks he can cuss the guy out of the room, but the adult just won't back down for it. He cusses too, but he doesn't rely on it though and he buries the kid. I enjoyed it, but yeah, not for use with students. Though I have mentioned it to my students on occasion in the event hey want to look it up on their own. :)

I don't get rap music any more, I used to like it when it was about something, in the 80s, RunDMC, that kind of stuff. Now it is all about gangster, pop a cap on someone's behind, and all the ghastly over the top sense of self derived from having a few quids and thinking you they are famous.

I stopped after 17 seconds because of the cursing. I thought I might show this to my creative writing classes in high school, but nope.

Where is generation of art that speaks to the British experience? Why is this audience nearly entirely devoid of any black people, save the one near the center of the crowd? The boys voice is incredibly whiny and annoying and the teachers remarks are disturbing. Two thumbs down.

The American and British anger and angst and their penchant to express themselves with expletives is a barbarian throwback that destroys all culture. Thanks for the ugly verbal images of the mentally stilted. It a shame all that creative energy could not be put to better use. I am bored with rap angst and anger.

10:27 AM on 02/17/2012

Not sure where you got the hate from in that sentence.

That was a lot more entertaining than any American battles I have seen lately.
