Abu Qatada: Prince Of Jordan Says He Cannot Guarantee Preacher Will Get Fair Trial

The Prince of Jordan has said he cannot give assurances that radical cleric Abu Qatada would get a fair trial in his country.

In an interview with the BBC, Prince El Hassan of Jordan, said: "I would like to say this is a country that has never taken the life of a political opponent of the regime.

"But if this man has committed crimes which is presumably why he is being held in England, I don't know what kind of court one has to offer to the Europeans. Does it want a juvenile court?"

The 51-year-old, once described as bin Laden's right hand man in Europe, was released on bail this week after more than six years in custody.

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled Qatada cannot be deported to Jordan because of the possibility he will be tortured in the country.

Home Office minister James Brokenshire has visited the country following Qatada's release, and David Cameron has spoken out about the "frustrating and difficult" efforts to deport the radical cleric.

Qatada first entered Britain in 1993, claiming asylum from torture from his native Jordan. Following 9/11 and the controversial introduction of indefinite detention for terror suspects in the UK, Qatada went underground. He became increasingly of interest to the British security services after his sermons appeared on videos found at the property of one of the 9/11 bombers. He was finally arrested in 2002 where he remained until 2005.

He was briefly released in 2005, but re-arrested later that year when the home office came to an "understanding" with the Jordanian government facilitating his deportation on the condition of a fair trial.

However, last month the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Qatada could not be extradited to Jordan due to the same concerns over torture testimony.

Fighting against Qatada's detainment, Ed Fitzgerald QC, representing the cleric, said that his client had been held for more than six years fighting deportation, and nine years overall on the ground that he was a risk to national security.

Speaking at the recent Special Immigration Appeals Commission, he said: "The detention has now gone on for too long to be reasonable or lawful and there is no prospect of the detention ending in any reasonable period.

"However the risk of absconding, however the risk of further offending, there comes a point when it's just too long. There comes a time when it's just too long, however grave the risks."

According to Roger Smith, the director of Justice, there are two issues on why Qatada has not been charged.

Speaking to The Huffington Post UK last month, he said: “The first question is what exactly has he done? Incitement seems most likely, but maybe they haven’t they nailed him on something sufficiently specific. The second question centers around what links he has had with the security services."

After keeping Qatada under arrest for the best part of a decade, it appears the UK government would rather find a way of transporting the whole mess east for Jordan to deal with rather than hold a trial in the UK that could prove a huge embarrassment for both current and previous governments responsible for Qatada's incarceration.

Prince El Hassan, thank you for your concern but I don't think we're all too bothered about whether he gets a fair trial or not, just take him. I'm sure it'll be fine. Jordon seems like a very nice country. Indiana Jones III was filmed there. Just take him. Please.

He came crying to this country saying he was going to be tortured in Jordan and wanted asylum for those reasons, then gives us one in the back by praising 9/11 then encouraging young muslims to turn against us, telling us Islam will take us over this country etc etc, I dont care where he goes but if Jordan wont take him i bet the Americans will (Bless Them), put him in Cuba, let him rot their for praising the deaths of thousands of American citizens at there place of work, they would put him away for life with no hope of parole like they do with wicked evil who murder at will, here hes on an "ASBO" for the moment, being housed in a small mansion and he and his brood are being fed and watered with all the facilities of the NHS, things he could only dream of where he was from, This "spineless" coalition dont seem to care what the British public want, its against his "Human Rights", dont drag this on for to long or you might have to pay him a couple of "Millions"(or more) for "Hurt Feelings", What a sick country we live in with "Weaklings" who are supposed to be "Leaders", thats a joke, Have a nice day.

Once upon a time, there was a conflict. One side used car/wagon bombs and mortars to inflict the maximum damage on it's opponents infrastructure and civilian population whilst the other side may or may not have used specialised expertise accompanied by a STK policy to minimise the chances of it's opponents success. Fast forward to now and we have a similar situation with an entity who is at conflict with us and our liberal lifestyle and uses bombs to inflict the maximum damage it can to our infrastructure and our civilian population..... solutions please?

Why in God’s name are we keeping him here? Just take him to the Airport and put him on a plane. The man is a terrorist he hate us he has conspired to kill us he does not deserve the protection of this country throw him out. I cannot understand this country where we extradite our own people to America but will sit there and protect this piece of s###.
On top of all this you the taxpayer are paying his rent at £1900 per Month

The blame for this situation lies squarely with the governments of the UK who have allowed asylum seeking laws .

The fact he arrived in this country illeagaly should be enough reason to deport him. If not th ECHR should accomadate him in Brussels.

If we can't extradite him to Jordan, why not ship him out where the European Court of Human Rights are based, presumably it's somewhere in Europe? It seems that they have his best interests at heart, so let them pay for his upkeep, as well as his family. What I would like to know is, who paid the fee of Ed Fitzgerald QC to represent him in court? I suspect....we did. We've fed him in jail for years and no doubt his family living in Wembley as well.......we must be completely mad. That's the only thing I can think.

That should ensure he remains in the UK living off taxpayers for the rest of his days.

From where he came from, they sent him here in UK as a spy. Britain must realise this, he is preaching hate, violence, recruiting members to go to other country to harm UK and it population so why would his native land going to take him back? Even if he is not spy, his native land saying stay there because if you return you would preach citizen here so really if thid is the case why would we keep you here so stay in UK it is their problem? UK must deport him or send him back to prison because UK citizen have right to live in peace. UK citizen do not share violence theory with other people and their faith. UK was and is Christian country and always will be. If anyone go to Arab nation, they have to follow their streak religious code otherwise death penalty so why we keep him here. He was threat and he always going to remain as long as he live here.

I am so sick of this country becoming the soft underbelly of the EU, France and Italy have deported people against an ECHR instruction and nothing has happened to them, sometimes rules have to be broken if its a bad rule, send him back regardles, and take control of our country once more.

Could someone enlighten me? What is the difference between this man and a certain Austrian chancellor from the previous century? Has the European court of human rights forgotten the atrocities comitted by the fanatical followers of the aforementioned Austrian? If this man is proven to be involved in any subsequent terrorist event that results in loss of life to a UK national, will we be able to sue the ECHR for negligence in releasing him into our society?

Isn't it a bit scary that HERE on this social media news site one could say something obvious regarding the motives of the King of Jordan and in one's travels one could be arrested, charged and convicted of a crime that while said HERE isn't a crime? The WORLD has suddenly become that much smaller that a voice could carry from Acocks Green to Amman.
