Newcastle United Fan Arrested For St James' Graffiti

Geordie Scores Two Own Goals With Graffiti

A fan has been charged after graffiti was daubed at Newcastle United's ground hours after the St James' Park signs were removed.

The old lettering was removed on Thursday after it was announced in November that the Magpies’ stadium was to be renamed the Sports Direct Arena.

A 29-year-old was charged with criminal damage, yet scored a second own goal as he forgot to add an apostrophe, instead daubing “St James” in white paint.

Owner Mike Ashley decided to rename the stadium in a bid to “showcase the sponsorship opportunity to interested parties”. The club’s managing director Derek Llambias said that the rebranding could generate up to £10m a year.

* Michael Atkinson will appear before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on March 7.
