Iranian Warships Enter Suez Canal As Hague Warns Of 'Cold War'

Iran Suez Canal

Iranian warships have entered the Suez canal, via the Mediterranean sea, for the second time since the revolution of 1979.

The Shahid Qandi, a destroyer, and its supply vessel Kharg passed through the Suez canal this morning, although it is not clear what their destination will be. However it is likely to cause tension with Israel, who described a similar expedition by Iran a year ago as "provocation."

However, Iranian Navy chief Admiral Habibollah Sayari told news agency Irna that the mission was a "show of might" and a "message of peace."

The ships reportedly docked at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia earlier. The vessels may be on their way to Syria, according to a Suez canal authority source, reports Reuters.

The warships mission comes as concerns about Iran's nuclear ambitions were raised by Foreign Secretary William Hague. He warned that the state's nuclear plans could plunge the world into "a new Cold War" with the Middle East.

The Foreign Secretary predicted a nuclear arms race among rival Middle Eastern states that would carry the dangers without the safety mechanisms of the old rivalry between the West and the USSR.

Israel is rumoured to be planning military strikes within months. Ahmadinejad claimed this week that Iran had loaded its first domestically-made fuel rod into a nuclear reactor.

My question is ;why Israel had poked their finger into all Arab States eyes her in the past 15 years?
Israel did not leave one Arab country friend with her, why was that politically right for Israel i'll; never know! my most important question of the day is, how the USA. and the UK. looking at Israel Making enemies by threatening their neighboring countries namely the Arab states bordering her [Israel]?

American presidential candidates are probably over joyed with this. With no "common enemy" the american public is paying way too much attention to the constant fiscal raping they keep getting from thier own leadership. The cold war revolved around the theory of mutual destruction which Iran is a million miles away from as far as toeing up to the US goes. Keep "joe the plumber" scared and you can pick his pockets clean as long as you (government) promise to keep him safe. Not saying it happened but I really wouldn't be shocked to find out 25 years from now that Irans "taunts" we're a result of a hush-hush endorsement from american concerns.

That's not much of a destroyer - it looks very like some kind of small Vosper Thorneycroft frigate.

Does not look like a "mighty navy" to me .... a bit out-dated and low on numbers more like. And if they get a nuclear weapon capability how many will there be? Not as many as France, UK, USA and Isreal have for sure. And what is wrong with a future nuclear detrrence strategy with Iran? It worked with the Russians.

I for one do not want to be dragged into another war for a cause based on hyperbole or lies.

I agree that there's little to be feared by Iran's naval capabilities but the comment regarding nuclear deterrence lacks the same parallels that existed between the Soviet Union and the Western superpowers back in the day. Yes, we had the Cuban missile crisis but that could have turned out quite a bit differently if Krushchev had been controlled by religious Zealots that believed dying as a martyr was the highest form of sacrifice for one's beliefs. THAT element is what makes the idea of Iran having nuclear weapon capability truly to be feared.
09:49 PM on 02/19/2012
But I do not believe that Iran is full of religious zealots. The Iranians I know could never be put into that category. We are being told they are all religious zealots and frankly I do not accept that. I believe they have a minority of such, some with considerable power, but they do not represent the majority of Iranians. Let the West show its disdain for those in power in Iran and encourage the majority of Iranians to act themselves against them. That is not going to happen as quickly as Israeli and US impatients would want (of course) but sanctions should help bring that on sooner rarther than later.

as the iranian navy was unable to use the suez canal while mubarak was in power its just a way for the egyptians to say this is our back yard i hope the message is made more clear in the futore of arabia and those US citizens that have more loyalty to israel than to the US should be taught a clear lesson

If Iran wants nuclear weapons let them have it. Isreal has had nukes for years, worst kept secret in modern times. Only country that doesn't allow U.N. weapons inspectors on it's soil, but the US is strangely silent on the matter. Iran is no threat to anyone, not convinced they are not just trying to upgrade their power grid. True, their president is a hot head and a reactionary but the urban Iranians are well educated and sophisticated. They do not hate America although they should given America's past meddling in their affairs. I'm talking about the CIA engineering a coup and bringing down the legitamate government and installing the shah a brutal dictator much like Saddam. Why? All because they were going to nationalize the oil companies for the benefit of the Iranian citizens.!

You must be living under a rock. Iran has threatened Israel in public many times, and for over 3 decades now, the daily mantra in Iran is chanted over and over, "death to America, death to Israel". The US and Israeli flags are painted on the streets so the military parades can step on them. If this is not hate of the West, I don't know what is. Although it is a fact the Shah was brutal, he was not worse than the present despotic ayatollah dictatorship in Iran...

You obviously have no understanding of international affairs. Their ayatollah for better or worse is their choice. The shah was put in place by the US not their choice. If they hate the US then it is well deserved. The US was meddling in their affairs in the fifties and was supplying arms during the Iran Iraq war to Saddam . A war that took almost a million lives in Iran. You think the US could stomach those kinds of loses?
How do you know what the daily mantra in Iran is? Have you ever been there? All you know is what the American media feeds you and believe me the American media has mastered the art of propoganda. Have you not learned anything during the Iraq and Afghan wars? Try to read between the lines. I know , it would require some effort on your part.
