Mel Gibson reached out to Whitney Houston and tried to help the tragic superstar overcome her personal issues at the height of her drug troubles, according to a new report.

The Braveheart star previously came to the aid of Britney Spears following her public meltdown in 2008 and offered up his estate in Costa Rica as a refuge for the pop star to recover from her struggles away from the spotlight.

Now TMZ.com reports Gibson also attempted to come to the rescue of Houston while she battled an addiction to cocaine, marijuana and other drugs in the early 2000s.

Website editors claim the actor visited Houston and spent time with her to help her beat her drug demons, and his efforts have landed him an invitation to attend the singer's private memorial service on Saturday.

However, Gibson will not be able to join reported guests Kevin Costner, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder at the funeral in Newark, New Jersey due to family plans.

Houston died last weekend. Her cause of death has been deferred pending toxicology results.

The singer will be laid to rest on Sunday, a day after her funeral.

Well done, Mel Gibson! It's very easy for people to knock those who have problems. Often, as in this case, it's only those who've gone through similar experiences who'll help out- the rest of us are happy to watch someone's downward spiral, willing them to self-destruct. If only some of the others in celeb-land had helped out too, she might still be alive. It's all very well turning up and being seen at a funeral, but the best time to show someone respect is when they're still alive.

I think Brotha Mel is to be commended. It indeed, takes one to know one. All the philosophers out here who haven't walked that mile are just philosophizin'. An addict is the very last person to admit they have a problem Trust me. Help? "I don't need it. I got this." Or similar words. It's a livin' nightmare. If one considers this livin'. But tryin' to figure out why one is in such dire straits is beyond the comprehension of one in such dire straits. Life.

Everybody should able to take what they like, tax all drugs, make them all legal, alcohol is the most destructive of all, it causes more problems than all the other drugs put together.

Lol, Mel Gibson advising you on addiction is like taking advice from Fred West over gardening!

Fred West was once a farm labourer so might well have been good at gardening - but I don't think he's given out much advice since 1995. Mel Gibson has had his own problems with addiction in the past, so he would probably be in a good position to give advice to others. Lol indeed.

Mel Gibson helps someone get over their addiction? Shouldn't he try to sort out his boozing first? And offering a coke addict the use of his estate in Central America is like putting an alcoholic in a Jack Daniels' distillery! What a berk!
