Nuclear Iran Could Lead To 'New Cold War', Says William Hague

William Hague Iran Cold War

Iran's nuclear ambitions could plunge the world into "a new Cold War" with the Middle East, William Hague has warned.

The Foreign Secretary predicted a nuclear arms race among rival Middle Eastern states that would carry the dangers without the safety mechanisms of the old rivalry between the West and the USSR.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, he insisted Britain did not back military action against the Islamic republic - as Israel is thought to be planning.

But he said there was a "crisis coming down the tracks" that could result in "disaster" for world affairs.

"(The Iranians) are clearly continuing their nuclear weapons programme," Hague said.

"If they obtain nuclear weapons capability, then I think other nations across the Middle East will want to develop nuclear weapons.

"And so, the most serious round of nuclear proliferation since nuclear weapons were invented would have begun with all the destabilising effects in the Middle East. And the threat of a new Cold War in the Middle East without necessarily all the safety mechanisms. That would be a disaster in world affairs."

There are growing fears that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will not be deterred by sanctions, the preferred route of the US and Britain to pressure the regime into abandoning its nuclear weapons programme.

Israel is rumoured to be planning military strikes within months. Ahmadinejad claimed this week that Iran had loaded its first domestically-made fuel rod into a nuclear reactor.

Hague stressed that "all options must remain on the table" concerning Iran but said that a military attack would have "enormous downsides".

"We are very clear to all concerned that we are not advocating military action," he said.

"We support a twin-track strategy of sanctions and pressure and negotiations on the other hand."

He added: "We are not favouring the idea of anybody attacking Iran at the moment."

What a Chamberlain-moment for Mr.Hague. The Cold War or Iron Curtain would not deter ambitions of Iranian leaders to dominate the region. And Mr.Hague does realize that MAD would not hold off Iranians putting it quite eloquently in "without necessarily all the safety mechanisms". The Cold War will last only till when emboldened by Iranian nuclear umbrella Hamas and Hezbollah attack Israel. Would it be month, six months or a year? The Cold War without MAD would not last for long and soon pull the region into all out war. Hence the alternative, a choice - stop Iran now or get regional war with nuclear warheads on Iranian missiles.

Let Iran go as far as the Non-proliferation Treaty they signed and we agreed to, says they can go.

So far they have stayed within the NPT.

This is all fear monger, war mongering to keep the MIC fully employed.

The USA spends more on war than the rest of the world combined.

WE spend over 50% of our f taxes on wars. http://www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm

Iran spend a relatively small portion of it's money on war.

The USA, goes to war for profit on lies, tortures, and those who orders the torture go free.

Who is the bully?

Wake up folks.

The west is violating our UN treaties and the Geneva convention with the leaders calls for war against Iran.

That is just pushing Iran and every other country to worry about if they are next.

What if Iran has already bought a few nukes on the black market.

If we had invaded Cube, the world would be a radioactive cinder.

For once, resist the call to war.

Another Iran-boosting comment, replete with errors.
Just one example: "WE spend over 50% of our f taxes on wars"

The defense allocation is actually 3.6% of the total USA budget.
And, of course, not all of that is spent on war fighting.
See http://www.politifact.com/virginia/statements/2011/aug/05/randy-forbes/forbes-says-us-defense-spending-measured-against-g

In fact, as the link shows:
"U.S. defense spending, measured against GDP, is near historic low"

And, of course, Iran has NOT "stayed within the NPT".
IAEA inspectors visited Iran earlier this month, but were not allowed to inspect a single site.

Also, Iran has worked on nuclear triggers, which have only one function - to detonate a nuclear bomb.
See http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/25/world/middleeast/25iran.html?_r=1&pa¬gewanted=all
"[The IAEA] possesses evidence that Tehran has conducted work on a highly sophistica¬ted nuclear triggering technology that experts said could be used for only one purpose: setting off a nuclear weapon."

Why don't you go to the war resisters link and understand how you have been lied to.

The MIC will do anything ti hide the real costs of war.

Sure, after we threaten Iran with attacks, a war crime btw, they refused inspectors. But up to that point they have done everything within the NPT.

I don't believe the west when they say some country has aluminum tubes, or yellow cakes, of anything, they have lied so many times, don't you ever learn? (I don't believe any country for that matter).

just remember only one country droped the bomb the U S A. and this british aways follows them kettle pot springs to mind
09:37 AM on 02/19/2012
Hey WIlliam Hague, maybe an arms race could be averted if you & you Israeli sponsored mates stopped threatening them?
remember we have invaded 2 of their neighbours. the US has almost 50 massive military bases within striking distance of tehran, & both US & Israel are bristling with Nukes

Israel wants nothing more than to e allies with iran. They even supported them in the iran-iraq war, all while khomeini was vocally endorsing their genocide. This has to do with religious hatred of jews, and islamic supremacist thinking. There is no arguing or negotiating with this, from israel's standpoint.

So while you have a small, if misguided and simple point regarding america, there is nothing the israelis could do, other than kill themselves, to make peace with the current iranian regime. Which is why I don't blame them in the slightest for being terrified of the prospect of iranian nukes. If somebody who hated you for a completely illogical reason got nuclear weapons, you would be terrified too.
09:02 AM on 02/23/2012
"a small, misguided and simple point" - what ? so you believe that the Iranians dont feel threatened by all the US military bases that surround their country? or the fact that a Nuclear armed adversary who has threatened "all options" against them has invaded 2 of their neighbors. An enemy that openly talks about pre-emptive nuclear attacks
and you believe that "Israel wants nothing more than to be allies with Iran" ??
"nothing the israelis could do to make peace" - errrr....they are at peace now ! stop planning & threatening war !!
are you on crack?

We all know that Israel has nuclear bombs and if Iran did get they own then I feel that it would be Israel to fire first as they know that the USA will back them, Iran is like a Jack Russell as a lot to say but will not bait very often. May be if we try to find out why they want these bombs we may be able to find a way of getting them not to build any, but it is funny that the countries who have the bombs are the same ones saying you cannot have any but who are they to say they can't. Once the first bomb was explode the Earth was on a down ward slide, why they cannot get rid of all they have I don't know

The west has had nukes since WW2. and not used them, except form ending WW2 ofc. But dont forget theses people who want them now are extreme, they belive there is glory in death, in holy war. i personally would sleep a lot easyer if they did not have there fingers on a nuke button.
remember the old saying "all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing ! "

WW2 was already as good as over but Truman and his cohorts felt the urgent need to test their new toy, not just once but twice. The US mindset has not changed.
03:53 AM on 02/19/2012
The Japanese wouldn't even surrender after the first bomb was dropped. Also, besides getting WW2 over sooner, it probalby kept Ivan from waltzing into western Europe.

Once again the world and America's youth will spill their blood for Israel and the oil cartels.

in fact iran is many, many years away from developing an effective nuclear weapon. they have just inserted the first indigenous rod into the reactor; they will have to wait for years to collect enough fissile material; then they have to develop a triggering device, which is more difficult than centrifuges. then they have to develop effective delivery system - missiles; and finally they have to develop ICBMs to reach america. of course, there are countries willing to sell these technologies or finished products to anyone interested, but those countries are appeased, not threatened, by the US. the real reason for this hysteria is that iran wants to sell its oil in euro and other currencies, and it has been moderately successful. if a sufficiently large number of OPEC members switch out of dollars, the value of the dollars will plummet further. that is why america is roaring, and trying to convince the world about the perils of an iranian bomb - much the same way about the iraqi bomb, and let us remember saddam also tried to sell oil in currencies other than dollars. incidentally this explains the mysterious silence of the chinese, who are very good friends of iran - they also do not want the dollar to fall; they are sitting on bundles and bundles of dollars!

Excellent post and well researched, it's also worth noting that Gadaffi had also gone some way to introduce the Gold Dinar as a currency for trading oil. The rest is (recent) history.

"Iran's nuclear ambitions could plunge the world into "a new Cold War" with the Middle East, William Hague has warned." Like North Korea? The ruling elite still think we are sheep and can't see through these pathetic statements and see their real purpose.

Unfortunately the ruling elite are right, you can fool most of the people most of the time. I just wish it was different.
03:55 AM on 02/19/2012
we are running out of enemies, all thats left is Iran and North Korea, although they are trying to make china into one. Need an enemy to keep military budgets up

Iran is not allowed to have a nuclear programme. Israel has over a hundred nuclear warheads can anyone justify this hypocracy?
03:09 PM on 02/21/2012
Justify it? We can't even spell it!

if israel had spent the last 30 years, threatening the genocide of its neighbors and sponsoring terrorism in them, it might be the other way around.

I notice most of the postings state that we should not get involved. Quite right the Israilis have Mossad and the Americans the Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln let them both use them to the full and we watch from the side lines.
