Backstage Beauty: Vivienne Westwood Red Label Autumn/Winter 2012

After colourful face paint and crazy, back-combed hairstyles in seasons past, there was a definite change on the beauty front at Vivienne Westwood today.

Val Garland created a softer, low-key look for Mac, which she described as "a 30s inspired, natural tomboy". Caramel colours were essential for this, with a "tea-stained complexion and dusty, earthy tones" on the cheeks.

Studio Moisture Cream and Face + Body were used on the skin while Coffee Pencil and Sepia Root Cream Colour Base were applied on the eyes. Brows were brushed upwards with Mink Brow Set and a mahogany pencil and C6 Studio Fix Powder was patted onto the lips.

However, Westwood's girl gang look wouldn't have been complete without the handrawn tattoos on the models' arms, hands, necks and feet. "They add to the tough chic look", Garland told us backstage. "They look like school girls who have been scribbling on their hands".

The beauty world has been waiting to see tattoos on the catwalk. Trust Westwood to show us how it's done.
