Sainsbury's have caused outrage for covering up an issue of magazine Attitude featuring the actor Daniel Radcliffe with a modesty board in one of their London stores.

Radcliffe, who appears fully clothed on the gay magazine's cover, used an interview with the magazine to speak out against homophobic bullying.

Scott Bryan who took the picture said: "It was in the Dalston Junction Sainsbury's. I've never seen it blocked from view in that way. It made me feel a bit annoyed because apart from a few exposed abs there's nothing in any way that's pornographic or shocking."

The 22 year old writer said he believed Attitude was "on the same level as GQ or Esquire", adding: "I think in some ways it's more tasteful than a lot of other Lads' mags."

Tweeters asked if the same treatment was given to other men's magazines.

Re: - Out of interest, does anyone know if Sainsbury's also daintily covers up GQ/Esquire/FHM or the Daily Star?

Sainsbury's, is this acceptable for ? It isn't pornography. Its bloody Daniel Radcliffe.

the lack of unified policy gets me, my local sainsburys doesn't cover them. Clearly Whitechapel is fine with the gays

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: ""Following feedback from customers we introduced modesty covers several years ago across a wide variety of magazines. This is to ensure no offence is caused to customers who may object to the images or the content on the covers of some magazines."

"The titles that do have modesty covers do so for every edition so no particular cover is ever singled out."

So if anyone objects to anything Sainsbury's will comply and cover it up with a 'modesty' board? It is probably to do with creeping religion, and the crazed who do not like any suggestion that being gay is in anyway nothing to be unhappy about. So the presence of Harry Potter aka Daniel Radcliffe on the cover of a gay magazine promoting tolerance, of course will having them freaking out completely.

This is outrageous for any magazine unless it's some porn mag with naked people all over the cover.Cesorship really has no place ever.

If I could paraphrase the Sainsbury statement: "Our staff are mindless drones incapable of exercising judgement or independent thought. And our customers are a pack of victorian era prudes prone to fits of the vapours."
