'Koran Burning' Draws Nato Apology After Furious Protests In Afghanistan

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 21/02/2012 09:38 Updated: 22/04/2012 10:12

The US commander of Nato troops in Afghanistan has apologised after copies of the Koran were sent to be burned in a rubbish tip.

The Korans were left in the rubbish and transported in a lorry by coalition soldiers to a pit on the Bagram air base, 60km north of Kabul, where waste is burned.

According to the BBC, five Afghans working at the tip noticed the religious books in the pile, and retrieved them. Photos of the books released by news wires showed them with partially burned pages.

Large-scale protests of up to 2,000 people erupted outside the base in response to the news.

People threw fire bombs and stones at the base, while the Reuters news service said flares were fired from helicopters to disperse the crowd.

The base where the books were burned is already controversial in Afghanistan because it has been accused of mistreating and torturing suspected Taliban fighters.

In his statement, General John R. Allen said: "when we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them".

The general ordered an investigation and promised that the actions were not intentional.

"I offer my sincere apologies for any offense this may have caused, to the president of Afghanistan, the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and most importantly, to the noble people of Afghanistan.

"I would like to thank the local Afghan people who helped us identify the error, and who worked with us to immediately take corrective action."

Allen's statement was played repeatedly on local TV, in an attempt to diffuse the violence.

Ten UN workers were killed in 2011 after the news that an American preacher had burned a copy of the Koran in Florida.

The full statement read:

To the noble people of Afghanistan –

I have ordered an investigation into a report I received during the night that ISAF personnel at Bagram Airbase improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which included Korans.

When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate religious authorities.

We are thoroughly investigating the incident and we are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again. I assure you … I promise you … this was NOT intentional in any way.

I offer my sincere apologies for any offense this may have caused, to the President of Afghanistan, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and most importantly, to the noble people of Afghanistan.

I would like to thank the local Afghan people who helped us identify the error, and who worked with us to immediately take corrective action.

No one gave a toss about the tree they cut down to print that book, and yet because it's got some religious mumbo jumbo now printed on it, it's considered too sacred to even burn? Maybe someone should start tagging the Amazon rainforest with religious text? Might do the environment some good.

So the news is;
Taliban prisoners were found sending secret messages inside books, so the prison wardens confiscated the lot and sent them off for burning and the Islamic world is in uproar.

Maybe they should direct their anger at those so called Muslims who decided to deface their holy book

This sweet'n'kind general's pep-talk is embarrassing, besides being totally useless. Noble people? I wish someone would elaborate on the use of the attribute "noble"?
What makes them so noble? I never heard general Patton or Eisenhower address the Germans in 1944 as "noble people" and apologize if some drunken soldiers burned a copy or two of "Mein Kampf".
I am against burning books, but there are books which if massively distributed do cause harm.
(btw. Germans had a history of "nobility" which was their great contribution to the civilization.)

All my life I did what ever I could to combat racism and cultural or religious intolerance, because they are bellow human dignity and not something a civilized society should tolerate.
But, equal treatment and respect of other cultures, freedoms and believes MUST BE earned and validated by RECIPROCITY.
For each church or synagogue or ashram built in an Islamic country, with demonstrable welcome and freedom to worship in peace, one Muslim mosque or Islamic center should be allowed in a Western country.
A Muslim family in which the women are not treated as equals and being denied their full rights have no business living in a western country, and should be denied immigration.

Excellent comment! I wonder if they would be concerned if someone burned some Bibles? - I think not. Their religion has not kept up with science, etc. and evolved because there is no separation of church and state and hence no dialogue or free discussions . They are literally still in the 12th century. I beleive our faith evolves only in a democratic culture such as ours. We do need to keep them out of our country.

What a grovelling NATO apology. All over some books. Now if a *person* had been set alight, I would understand the anger...but it was only a crowd of 'up to 2000', it says, which ain't all that many. Maybe a lot of the population weren't that bothered after all. Maybe the islamists who no doubt fomented the demonstrations aren't that representative of Afghanis, after all.

I wonder when we British are going to get an apology from Muslims for burning poppies on Remembrance Sunday?

Time for the West to wake up from the ridiculous daydreaming about "respecting other cultures". Cultures of hate and religions where beheading and stoning are integral part of their teaching and practice, and to hate of all "others" is an equivalent to piety, deserve no respect nor tolerance.
Want to be politically correct and practice equality you preach? Want fair play with Islam?
Than demand strongly and in no ambiguous or negotiable terms that we, the West, DEMAND equal treatment for all our Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Mormon, Atheist or Hindu fellow human beings, men and women, straight and gay, who have the misfortune to live among Muslims in "their" countries.
We MUST DEMAND reciprocity in all social relations - the SAME tolerance and freedom they get when they immigrate to western countries.
Nothing less would do, and nothing less makes any sense, and nothing less is FAIR:

Personally if I lived in a country where young girls had acid thrown at them for going to school, I'd be more upset about that than some books being burned by accident.

I don't get the priorities of some of these religious conservatives.

Afghanistan, probably the craziest country in the world?

Religious fanatics take the words written in their religious books and distort them for their own gratification; the words written in these books are not the true words or understanding of the time they are reporting on. These books are about a story that happened centuries before and past down by word of mouth distorted by language and translation. A book is just a book the true meaning comes from within, the book is just a guide what all religious books teach is murder is the true sin and an insult to their god. Religious faith is about love of one another understanding our neighbour living in harmony and forgiveness. It matters not what the book is called the bases of the story is the same and the book is not an historic original the value is within the individual paper and board do not make a faith.

The bible and the koran are history written down as accuratley as possible...no one can say if the events depicted are 100% accurate but no disagrees that Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth and non one disputes the koran's reference to the same 'old testament' prophets that appear also in the bible.
08:30 PM on 02/21/2012
History is written by the victor and the victor always destroys the religion of the defeated using parts of their faith against them distorting the facts or fiction. Jesus of Nazareth may have walked this earth but at that time he would not have been considered a prophet but more a terrorist of his time by the ruling classes. What would have been written by anyone eventually considered a prophet would have been written after the fact and fact would not get in the way of a good story. The strange thing about these prophets is they taught killing was a sin yet more people have been killed in their name and now being killed for a book written by someone who was not there at the time. The variation in religious interpretation serves to highlight how the same story has been distorted by time and language. Fear has also been part of religion but modern fear has become a way of control, religion used fear of the devil to keep its followers true to the faith. Some religions now use fear to stem development and progress and the most sinful of all change in the individual their prophet would never throw the stone.
