'Wild At Heart', Starring Stephen Tompkinson, Facing The Axe?

Coming To A Grizzly End?

Safari show Wild At Heart is facing the axe after a ratings slump.

The TV drama, about a vet who opens a game reserve in South Africa, pulled in just 5.7 million viewers last week, compared to 10 million at its peak.

A show source reveals its unlikely to return as it costs a fortune to shoot in South Africa's Glen Afric nature reserve.

The insider tells the Mirror: "Everyone involved knows it's expensive to make and it's not as popular as it used to be so it's not rocket science.

"The cast and crew love making it, but all good things come to an end and we've had a good run."

Stephen Tompkinson, who plays vet Danny Trevanion, once admitted that the cast feared the axe due to budget cuts.

He said: "Everyone worked hard because we thought if this is the last series, we'll make it the best."

A spokesperson for ITV says a decision will be made when the current series ends in March.

The rep adds: "It's pure speculation. The show is still doing good business for us and has lots of loyal fans. We never decide on a recommission until after a show ends."

The series has also taken a hit because ratings for Dancing on Ice, which airs before Wild At Heart every week, have dropped.
