An eight-year-old girl is in a critical condition after being accidentally shot in the stomach by her nine-year-old classmate.

The girl, who has been named by various sources as Amina Kocer-Bowman, was wounded after the gun, which was reportedly in the male pupil's rucksack, went off during a lesson at Armin Jahr Elementary School, Washington.

"We do know the gun and the student were found," the school district spokesman Patty Glaser told the media.

A spokesperson for Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where the girl was airlifted to after the shooting on Wednesday, said the hospital did not expect the girl's condition to change overnight.

Her classmate has been arrested for bringing a gun into school, unlawful possession and assault, according to ITN.

Why was my comment removed? It was polite, reasonable, and expressed a possibility as to what might also have happened here. I had a brief, equally polite reply supporting it. What part of the Huffpost Code did I violate? What about the other comments removed?

smiler62 has replied to your comment, trouble is you can't see them as they were removed or never even posted by HP. I don't think you have won any friends today. Have a good day.

We should not appear too smug about this being a US problem. They do have far laxer gun laws than we do but some of our own British child gang members seem able to acquire them and shoot other kids nevertheless. Hardly a week goes by without youngsters knifing each other or committing some other act of serious assault or murder. There is no moral high ground for us to take in this matter. Throwing huge lumps of concrete off motorway bridges onto cars passing below (recent media reports) is just as deadly a pasttime as playing with guns. We do tend to become a bit high and mighty about gun incidents in the US, forgetting for a time the awful crimes that take place in our own country. Recent examples of a complete breakdown in law and order did nothing for our standing as a well run country in the eyes of the world. My prayers and thoughts go out to this young girl and her family, let's hope she recovers fully.

What will it take for America to realise that using guns is NOT normal?! How many more children have to be killed or injured in order for them to stop this?
09:13 PM on 02/23/2012
may this child live to enjoy another day..

What do you expect when guns are normal and crime isn't dealt with properly.

sorry but if a child brings a loaded gun into school with safety off which he must have done because an adult would not leave safty off must of being palying with gun when it went off. accident or not. he is old enough to do the crime he should do the time. children mature faster and watch and play video games on x box or other generic consoles and play 18+ games.

a girl is critically ill. a mother is in danger of losing child. it's not a slap on the wrist and pat on the head and say there, there don't do it again.

we have seen youngsters here kill children and not punished correctly. so i think the decision was right to arrest him

"Yeah, how disgusting to go into the School with the safety off on your gun, the 8 year old should have known better" !!!!
06:43 PM on 02/23/2012
Are you for real? The child should never have been able to get hold of a loaded gun and take it to school in the first place......
08:28 PM on 02/23/2012
exactly and now the Child who had the gun in his bag will probly be institutionalised with no future probably get lethal injection in 30 years time. do one america and your weapons of mass destruction
05:14 PM on 02/23/2012
Why was the child arrested? He is nine years old and doesn't yet fully appreciate or understand the consequenses of his actions.

It is the parents who should be arrested and jailed for allowing a firearm to be snitched by a minor. The charge should be manslaughter or attempted murder.

Totally agree. lt is amazing that there are people on here who want to put the blame on a young child, rather than the irresponsible parents, where it is where it belongs!!

It would not matter if you put a complete ban on guns or up the age to 21. criminals will always find a way to get hold of a gun. The law both here and in the USA will always come up against those who want guns whether it is for protection or hunting. We need to get a lot tougher on the criminal element than we are now. I do not know how we are to do this as so far no matter what we do it does not work, I know what I would like to do with the lot of them but then I would get locked up as well.

The Thing is - Back in January the 1st I wrote each day on this post highlighting that murder and violence is an everyday occurance in the UK, i said its time we stoped feeding on Films and games that are full of Killing and violence - I was bombarded by comments saying Films and gams are not influential - But i still say we should stop buying and feeding on violence. Film, TV and Games are influential otherwise Manufactures would not use them to promote their products.

Absolutely correct raystalbans.

Violence in films, on TV, videos and video games are definitely an unhealthy influence.

I used to ridicule Mary Whitehouse when I was a teenager 50 years ago. How wrong was I.

P.S.
I hope the little girl survives, suffers little trauma and lives a full, healthy life.

I also hope she sues the parents of the boy for everything they posess.

Murder and violence in the U.K is still pretty low, an everyday occurrence yes, but we still have only 600 murders a year, compare that to the U.S who may have 5 times the population, but they have 12,000+ murders (8,000+ of those with a firearm)So that's 5 times the population but 20 times as many murders !

I cannot believe it a story you can comment on at last. The first two stories were closed to comments by the huffers. Wonder WHY??????????
03:53 PM on 02/23/2012
Because the first two stories were British and for some reason Huff doesn't seem to like Brits commenting on British events.
04:19 PM on 02/23/2012
The non-acceptance of comment in UK appears an extension of the 'sub judice' restrictions binding on the media, even when the case has not yet got so far.
10:51 PM on 02/23/2012
O well that could explain it then.
06:15 PM on 02/23/2012
Because the Huff gestapo don't want you to comment on anything too controvresial. They are afraid that you may have a comment that they don't agree with.
10:55 PM on 02/23/2012
Well that must be a hell of a lot, for they took more comments from me than I care to remember not to mention the rest. I did send them a number of messages and the dorks didn't answer any of them. Goes to show their not for free speech the slabberheads.
