Cloud Height Fell Over Last Decade, Nasa Study Reports

Clouds

A Nasa study has showed that the sky is falling. Or at least the clouds, anyway.

According to scientists the average height of clouds has fallen over the last decade.

The team at the University of Auckland in New Zealand looked at 10 years of cloud-level measurements from the Multi-angle Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MISR), an instrument on the Nasa Terra satellite.

The data showed that the average global cloud height fell by around 30 to 40 meters between March 2000 to February 2010, or 1% of their normal height.

According to the study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the difference was largely a result of fewer clouds being found at high altitudes.

Lower clouds help the Earth cool itself more quickly. It is speculated the change may be a "negative feedback mechanism" counteracting some of the effect of global warming - though more study is needed before those conclusions can be confidently drawn.

"We don't know exactly what causes the cloud heights to lower," said lead researcher Roger Davies. "But it must be due to a change in the circulation patterns that give rise to cloud formation at high altitude."

"If cloud heights come back up in the next ten years we would conclude that they are not slowing climate change," said Professor Davies.

"But if they keep coming down it will be very significant. We look forward to the extension of this climate record with great interest."

Hoe many people here have lived for any length of time in or around the western Isles or the lake district? It is always full of low lying cloud. Hence the rain..places in Ambleside have been flooded time and again over the last few years. You won't hear anyone complaining around those places re the dry spell. It won't last for ever, get out and enjoy while you can.

By my estimation cloud hieght is not slowing climate change but rather introducing it.

I think that global warming has great money making potential. Tax people more. Higher taxes for companies etc etc...Trouble is, we are probably never going to witness significant global warming as this article clearly suggests... and if anything bad happens it will probably be an Ice Age..Then we all die and there's no scope for increasing tax..So, if you were in government what would your prognosis be? Global warming and increase income, or Ice-age and frighten everyone with out any financial reward?
16:26 on 25/02/2012
I recall that a few decades back the same institutions were telling us that we were heading for another ice age. Now its global warming.
Climate change is a natural ongoing process ... back when the Romans occupied Britain they were growing grape for wine in Norfolk but only a couple of centuries back the Thames would freeze over in winter.
Our planet is in a constant state of change.

No surprise when there is more pollution than 10 years ago.
10:40 on 25/02/2012
Care to expand on that theory? Why would pollution mean that the high-cloud cover sits a little lower?

Warmer planets by far in excess of ground temperatures of 4000 degrees have a ground to ionisphere cloude cover with nothing of space beteen them. Wicked storms are constant feaures as well. The closer to land clouds become the more extreme the precipitation and hazards of flooding, tornado's and or blizards. No one knows for sure yet wether man has created global warming or if its a natural cycle. Or even of the Suns natural summer cycle which lasts for 11 years. Which could be inducing it. Since it started late and its force unusually strong in sun spot magnetic episodes it is believed this cycle contributes to weather anomalies on earth.

Well if the sky falls in we won't know too much about it. The sun will swallow us up - alright for sun worshipers, but not for those of a fair skin like me lol.

Actually were the lowing of clouds to continue at this pace in 100 years time we would start to see another ice age. As lower clouds will cool the temperatures and winters and winter like storms become more severe and last longer. Spring and Summer rains also will hang around much more so creating lots of flooding and summer heat in sun belt area's will with humidity create intense heat waves. The last 11 years has indeed seen many of these conditions already. Moscow with a summer heat wave was previously unheard of.

The more that the northern and southern poles ice breaks off and melts into the ocean disturbs the current traffic and weather patterns change as a result. After all its the ice that is melting and fresh water that turns into gas, then rain and snow in other area's not previously seeing the amount before. Lowering clouds mean heavier density. More foul weather play.

These clouds pack a punch and can go across whole continents before they are finished unloading their burdons. Or worse stall over an area and continue to inflict heavy damage. Heat at the surface and 2000 feet up expand air molecules allowing them to saturate heavier amounts of water vapor keeping the cloud level low while growing in weight. We could be seeing storms that last for weeks rather then days. Punishing area's prone to extreme flooding, heat, snow. and other issues.

In the worst case scenario total ionization of the atmosphere with low cloud levels results in the sun being blocked out and with that comes crop failure and saturation of humidity in the 90% to 99% zone which after a month of such most of us would have serious watered down lungs and sufficate, drastic cooling, extreme glacial storms and render much of the planet into an ice age once again. Because after all a nice thick blanket of clouds blocking off the sun would really chill us out. But the heat trapping above that cloud layer would create a ceiling forbidding those cooler temperature moisture to circulate and thus trap it in place. So Global warming isn't the same as climate heating up. It is just the opposit.

By saying worst case I don't mean that in terms for life on earth mostly marine life that is and a few hardy terrestrial life.. but human life and those in our biosphere we share it with would have a hard going. It won't be uniform either. While some area's freeze solid others would become rain forests once again and still others vastly a desert. These are natural occurances on this planet but we haven't been around since the decline of the last ice age and if we were there is little evidence many survived it save those in the tropic zone that like Peru dug tunnels in the mountains themselves and lived there till the ice melted.

Many scientists have been saying for years that nature has a way of balancing things out. The planet has suffered greater changes than a few decades of mankind pumping out heat and gas. One massive volcano blast does more damage in a matter of weeks than we've done in a century - Krakatoa is known to have caused a planet-wide mini ice-age ... and yet the planet recovered. That's what nature does .... it balances things out.
Anybody hear anything about "The ozone layer" any more? "Global warming" soon changed into "Climate change", when the quasi-science didn't stack up. It's all faked to keep populations in check and global business making money.
12:11 on 25/02/2012
Global warming is a fact. The problem is as soon as we have a day of snow, the sheeple decide that there can be no global warming. They simply don't understand the mechanics of it. So climate change was put in place instead. Because some folk just don't 'get' how the world warming can, in fact, make some places colder and wetter.

It's not quasi-science at all. And if it were and it's design was to 'keep populations in check', it's failing admirably.

I don't think its a question of slowing it down rather then how do we intend to plan for our existance while it gears up and takes off.

Nature does what it wants. Taxes aren't gonna stop it. Using our technology and creating enviroments impervious to natures climatic wrath is a step in the right direction however. Some people think about moon bases. Well forget the moon. If we have the means to make a moon base we should be preparing to make such living accomidations right here and now is a good time. Before Earth gets down and serious with her laundry and we get washed out like tiny bugs we are.

I agree that some are using the situation as a political and money motive. That doesn't make it untrue however. It just makes those that manipulate and do nothing serious toward dealing with the event criminal.

As for your second question how in the world does global warming make some places colder and wetter? A three fold process that is dublicated in a lab. And seen evidence of having happened at least three times in earths life.

1. volcanic gases during earths formative years creates lots of carbon dioxicides and other noxious gasses that trap heat in the ionosphere. For the sake of argument lets say mans passing gass on the same level globally. Creating a ceiling to trap that gas as these create ceiling of heat at the upper levels of the atmosphere. Heat travels up and cold air stays low to the ground. Think fire in a house. When escaping what do you do? YOu crawl out right. Why. Because the hot air rises along with the smoke. Leaving cooler air by the floor. Eath is a closed enviroment like a house. All doors shut by space. Where is the hot air to go? Where is the smoke and carbon to go? Really it can't go anywhere.

Nothing keeps the parasites like humans in check then a swift change in climate. Whole kingdoms have been completely obliterated because a rain forest gradually dried up and became a desert. Or a nice stretch of tundra became a sheet of ice. Nature does recet itself. Likely what brought on the last ice age was the fact that earth was still busy making alot of land and spewing up huge amounts of noxious gas and earth into the atmosphere.

Earth got hot and bothered making landmasses.. and decided it was time to cool things off by trapping those gasses in the ionosphere with carbon from vulcano's she thickened up the cloud banks a few meters a decade till they were primed and ready to cover up the sun and chill all her hot massive peices of fresh continents and cover them with ice for a few thousand years. Wash , rince and dry and repeat. The question is not for us to say Global warming exist but at what pace does it take to get from Wash , to rince, to dry and repeat. And how do we as sentient life on this planet that seems to think about the importance of our being here tomorrow live while Earth does its laundry.
04:59 on 25/02/2012
there is no global warming.. its been proven in switerland. global warming and cooling is controled by the suns activity.. just another con to charge us green taxes......

So never mind the evidence, folks. It's been 'proven' in 'switerland'!

what evidence, every bit of so called evidence is false even the so called scientist can't aggree, by definnition science is a...best guess..

All aspects of science are important, measuring Climate Change and Weather Patterns will help us understand the mechanisms that govern our planet. Famines, ultraviolet radiation all parts of this mechanism that could all be fatal if the we do not understand what is or may happen to our planet. Its reassuring to know our planet seems to be more than just its random parts i.e, Humans, Animal, Plants, Geology, Weather and etc - I wonder is there a unknown entity or Universal balance we do not yet understand
23:36 on 24/02/2012
Of course there is John; it would be illogcical to think otherwise.
12:27 on 25/02/2012
thank you spock..live long and prosper
12:17 on 25/02/2012
"Famines, ultraviolet radiation all parts of this mechanism that could all be fatal if the we do not understand what is or may happen to our planet." Life itself is a fatal illness, we are all going to die. The dinosaurs, big and small were wiped out why do we think we will be any different? We are only insignificant humans, just another biological inhabitant of a rock in space.
21:54 on 24/02/2012
BTW, even if it was true, it's measured in metres, not meters.....which measure gas and electricity consumption.
23:39 on 24/02/2012
Well said
12:25 on 25/02/2012
Possibly they used gas meters to measure the fall of clouds ..................just to confuse us mere mortals. Nah just crappy reporting and ignorance what with the new metric system and all.
