Wolves Promote Ex-Assistant Terry Connor To Manager

Wolves Appoint A New Connor

Wolverhampton Wanderers have appointed Mick McCarthy's assistant Terry Connor as manager until the end of the season.

Connor succeeds McCarthy, who was sacked after a 5-1 home loss to Black Country rivals West Brom two weeks ago, for the remaining 13 league games in a bid to guide the club to safety.

The ex-Leeds United player has long been part of the Wolves coaching furniture, having followed ex-Bristol Rovers colleague John Ward to Molineux in 2001, and has served under all four club coaches since. He was promoted to assistant manager to McCarthy in August 2008.

Ex-Rangers manager Walter Smith became the latest to reject the Midlands club, who lie in the bottom three of the Premier League table, yesterday after a slew of other candidates passed up the chance.

Connor's fellow Yorkshireman Chris Kamara wished the new Wolves manager well:

Alan Curbishley rejected club owner Steve Morgan's overtures twice, whilst Brighton & Hove Albion's Gus Poyet declined the chance to manage in the Premier League and Reading's Brian McDermott - also approached - signed a new contract with the Royals.

On Connor's appointment, Morgan said in a club statement: "Having spoken to a number of people we have drawn that process to a close and myself and the Board are unanimous that Terry is the right man to lead the Club for the remainder of the season.

"This is a decisive step, which creates certainty, and the players are fully behind it."

After everyone said "no", it would appear the club had to appoint a "yes" man.
