A university has announced it will launch terrorism and airport security courses in an attempt to keep UK borders safe.

The airport security management course is the first of it's kind in the UK and has been developed in conjuction with police and the aviation industry. Meanwhile the counter terrorism course will teach students about the "latest methods used ot deal with the changing face of violent extremism in both the UK and international settings".

Both courses will combine lectures with practical classes and will be overseen by Andy Johnson, former detective chief inspector with the Lancashire Constabulary.

"At a time when our border controls are under increased scrutiny, UCLan is proud to announce these two new courses which will help train security professionals so they are prepared for the evolving security landscape," Johnson said.

"We emphasise the practical experience of working in the field and this will help stand prepare our students for the rigorous tests they will face in the real world."

Author of the report John Vine said there was a "lack of clarity" and security checks were suspended more times than senior managers realised.
