Mandela Released From Hospital

Nelson Mandela has left hospital, the South African government has said.

The 93-year-old former South African president was undergoing tests after being hospitalised on Saturday complaining of stomach pain. However according to government officials, the tests "did not indicate anything [was] seriously wrong."

In a statement released on Sunday, current South African president Jacob Zuma's office said: "The doctors have decided to send him home as the diagnostic procedure he underwent did not indicate anything seriously wrong with him.

"President Zuma thanks the public for the good wishes and support."

Mandela is considered a national hero for his fight against apartheid, which saw him jailed for 27 years. After his release in 1990 he became South Africa's first black president in 1994.

Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Frederik Willem de Klerk in 1993 for their work "for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa."
