Charlotte Church settled

Charlotte Church, who settled her and her parents' phone-hacking damages action for £600,000 at the High Court today, said she was "sickened and disgusted" by what she had discovered during her legal action against News International.

In a statement outside the Royal Courts of Justice, the singer said money "could never mend" the damage that was done to her and her family but she planned to put the payout she was awarded towards protecting herself and her children from further invasions of their privacy.

She said: "Today is an important day for me and my family. I brought this legal claim with my parents, as many others have done, because we wanted to find out the truth about what this newspaper group had done in the pursuit of stories about our family.

"What I have discovered as the litigation has gone on has sickened and disgusted me.

"Nothing was deemed off limits by those who pursued me and my family, just to make money for a multinational news corporation."

Church said her parents had suffered as much as she had in their treatment by the company.

"Whatever I have had to go through, they have suffered as well. They have been harassed, put under surveillance, and my mother was bullied into revealing her own private medical condition for no other reason than they were my parents.

"Someone in a newspaper thought that was OK. How can that be, in any right-thinking society?"
She said she was "happy" with the result in one sense, but added that she had discovered that, despite an apology, "these people were prepared to go to any lengths to prevent me exposing their behaviour", including forcing her mother to relive the
"enormous personal distress" she had been caused in 2005.

"It seems they have learned nothing, and I would have learned nothing more from an actual trial since it was clear that no-one from News International was prepared to take the stand to explain their actions," she said.

"In my opinion, they are not truly sorry, only sorry they got caught."

Church said she is now planning to focus on helping the criminal investigation and Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry, as well as others who are seeking to bring to justice those responsible for this appalling behaviour.
She added: "I would also like to make it clear that we were never in this for the money. Money could never mend the damage that was done.

"I intend to dedicate my portion of the settlement to protecting myself and my children from further invasions of our privacy."

She was never in this for the money but is going to use the £600,000 (SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS!) to protect her family from further invasions of their privacy. How about donating the money to a worthy charity so that we can believe that you were never in this for the money Charlotte!!!

I am at a loss to understand all your comments attacking Ms Church. She is entitled to her privacy and that her parents (mother) is left out of the press. What right has any newspaper or journalist to invade her/their private lives in that way. All you "knockers" would certainly complain if it happened to you. As for her drinking, so what ? Have none of you ever been drunk ? The excuse that it is " In the national interest" is a load of rubbish. Who cares if Charlotte Church has one over the top except Charlotte Church as she will probably have a very big hang-over in the morning ? Why does Joe Blogs deserve to be informed of her drinking habits ? The sensation seeking "RED TOPS" are a load of rubbish, non news worthy tripe.

Charlotte Church should not have had her phone hacked, we all agree with that, its the amount that is obsene, it makes no sence at all,even iif she gave it to a charity one would have some sympathy, but to walk out looking smug and with that grin was too much.
And i am sorry, as someone who works in the entertainment sector...she is a D List Artist, which is one scale above a Failed X Factor hopefull,.

My comment is not about weather she can sing or not, its about the amount she was awarded, it would not be so bad if a lady worth Eight Million Pounds at the last count gave it too a good cause.
As for being a World Class Singer,no she is not, she is an avarage singer who got lucky, no problem with that, that was her luck,and, good luck to her.
But £600,00.....Sorry Nicole is just not on when you consider how many people in this situation will get nothing because they dont have the means to take Murdoch on.
Of course all the anti Murdoch / Sun brigade are the same ones who suscribe to Sky !!!

As someone who was bullied on more than one occasion, i am glad she got her just rewards if the court thought she had been treated badly.....its simply the amount ..think about all the people who are bullied and dont have celeb / money to take this action.
Would it not be nice for her 2 donate this to a fund / cause to help such people?....i have no issue with her, its the amount.

At this rate, we soon won't have any papers. They'll all be broke. I think at £600,000, I would just go home quietly. By shouting the odds, Miss Church has highlighted once again her mother's medical condition - whatever that was.

Self enrichment charity is my guess.

More than most people see in a lifetime for a little bit of upset. Taxable? I doubt it too.

Papers should be punished, she should be awarded £2000 for hurt feelings.

Her phone and emails were hacked since she was sixteen and they wrote about her sex life leading her to fight with her friends and family for accusing them of leaking stories to the press! The press made a lot more out of it than the 600k charlotte deserved! If it doesnt bother you then tell us all about your life and that means sex too the lot every detail or forever hold your tongue!

I think you'll find that almost everyone in their twenties gets drunk and even has sex. This is no reason to be nasty about them.
