Roger Waters: 'Falkland Islands Belong To Argentina'

Roger Waters

Pink Floyd bassist and singer Roger Waters has risked upsetting some of his British fans by saying the Falkland Islands should belong to Argentina.

The 69-year-old musician, currently on a tour of South America, is said to have made the comments in an interview due to be aired on Chilean TV.

A journalist for the channel, Amaro Gómez-Pablos, tweeted on Tuesday that Waters had told him that he was "ashamed" of Britain's colonial past. When asked who he thought the islands should belong to Waters replied: "Las Malvinas are Argentine."

Amaro Gómez-Pablos
En entrevista exclusiva que saldrá el jueves, Roger Waters fue tajante: "Las Malvinas son argentinas", me dijo.

Las Malvinas is the Argentinian name for the disputed territory.

According to The Guardian, Waters subsequently tempered his remarks in a press conference where he said "clearly there needs to be a solution to the problem of the varying claims".

And The Sun reports that he also said the residents of the islands deserved a say on who ruled them: "They are British, aren't they, so they have a point of view and there is a case to be made."

The diplomatic spat deepened this week after the Argentinian government ordered some of the country's biggest companies to stop imports from Britain as the 30th anniversary of the 1982 Falklands conflict approaches.

And the Foreign Office in London said it was "very concerned" at reports that two British cruise ships were refused entry to an Argentinian port on Monday.

Waters is not the first celebrity to led his support to Buenos Aires' campaign to take control of the islands. Hollywood actor Sean Penn accused Britain of "colonialism" and said the decision to send Prince William to the region as a RAF search and rescue pilot was "unthinkable".

There has been no word what the other members of Pink Floyd think.

Why argentinian people ask for Falkland? No one is interested in that (boring and cold) place...its about oil and a stupid sense of patriotism. Im from Argentina...

Argentinian people ask for the islands because it was their land and it was invaded by the english in 1833. What a ridiculous comment. So you think any country with boring and cold places should give them away?

I guess you'd have to ask Frau Kirchner why that is.

Presumably it's tied into the Argentinian economy which is in dire straits at the moment, and getting worse.

He is probably saying that so the Argies do not pull the plug on the concerts he is due to play at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires later this month. Roger Waters could uses his position by acting as a goodwill ambasador and try and defuse the current sad state of affairs between our countries. Please knock down The Wall that is being built between Britain and Argentina.

The same Roger Waters that owns a $16-million island in the 'colonial' Bahamas?

AOL didn't like me summing up the facts of history. Comment banned.
But why claim something when centuries earlier this was already done by various other nations.
The UK, France and Spain have got a more valid claim to the islands then Argentina.

Argentina were not interested untill this latest find of oil. They cant manage their own affairs and now they want to screw the Islanders. It shows you how much they think of the place when they say the Islanders have no rights in the argument of who owns the Falkland Islands.Once again Argentina shows its self to be a Dictatorship caring nothing for peoples lives and freedom.I suppose if this builds into a fight and when they get their arses kicked again they will blame everyone else but them, selves. Didnt they waste enough lives last time?

Try this one - it is continually pulled - Google The Dirty War - Argentina killed tens of thousands of its own people during the 1970's and 80's all there on Wikipedia., Want to live under that kind of government? Nothing contentious, just the TRUTH - truth doesn't go down too well here on the public opinion manipulation boards.... they like to build a picture based on the selective posts they allow.

Wait, seriously? Everyone knows what happened between the 70's and the early 80's. It's not hidden. It was a military dictatorship, which is the one that started the war
